It is funny how families spread out across a country how you wish you had more memories of certain family members than what you had the opportunity to, after they pass away.

Once such person was my Auntie Nancy who recently passed away.

I remember meeting her when I was about 5 years old when she started dating my Dad's brother when he moved out West from Central Canada and ended up boarding at my Mom's parents house (confusing I know).

I remember that wedding when Auntie Nancy became an official Aunt even though she was Auntie Nancy long before that. She was a bit younger than all my Aunts and Uncles and she was always full of life. She dotted on us kids anytime that we made the trip out to Vancouver for family visits and was always more interested in us, then the adults when they came to visit in Calgary.

As we grew older, trips to the coast became less frequent as a family and my grandmothers passing. Still, me and my two sisters make a couple of trips a year out to the Vancouver area to visit all the family and friends. Every trip in the area always involved a day with my Aunt and Uncle. She would always plan a day that she knew would interest each of us without the rest of the family having to be together.

Usually, my Aunt and Uncle and I would head to Steveston in Richmond to visit the historic cannery and wander around and watch the fresh fish being offloaded from a boat and occasionally pick something up. Then we would make a stop at a historic hotel for some fish and chips for lunch or dinner. Generally we would make an out of the nowhere drive to places and they would both share stories of places that they, my grandparents and parents all had a story to be told about the place they were showing me. Anywhere I asked about, they wouldn't hesitate to drive there and share in another story of the place. Some I'm sure my parents would have preferred I did not know about .

On my last visit out there she informed me that she was diagnosed with stomach cancer and was just starting Chemo. Still, she had planned a morning of driving around the Delta area and a stop at a restaurant in the town where they lived. After lunch she was tired from the Chemo she was undergoing and asked if she would mind her taking a nap. When I inquired if we should should call it a day, she refused. Said she needed a nap and would be good to go for dinner at the Fish n' Chips restaurant in Richmond. She suggested if I went out to visit my Mother and Grandparents grave site, she would be good to go when I got back.

A little side note, my Mother was interned with my Grandparents in a cemetery not far from where they lived. Due to the vast location of family, she always tended to all 3 grave sites when other family couldn't due to distance. She never admitted it, but we all knew she was going and clearing away dead flower and such after any of had visited and even went out and placed flowers for occasions when no one would be there.

Last I had heard was that she was going to get a break from the chemo as the stomach cancer wasn't spreading and they figured her body could use a little break. Then, last Friday (a week ago), she told the principle at the school she worked at everyday as a crossing guard and lunch room supervisor for the past ten years that she felt like she was coming down with a flu. After going home and a little while later she had my Uncle take her to the hospital. Needless to say on Sunday she passed away due to complications of the cancer.

My sisters and I were able to take the day off work and fly out to Vancouver for the funeral yesterday. My uncle summed it up as to have his and her favourite nieces and nephew there made a bright spot in such a sad day.

The funeral was a full Catholic mass, one that I have been to a few times before. Although most people there were not Catholic, the priest seemed to break away from the tradition of a Catholic Funeral Mass and inserted my Aunt and her life into the scriptures that were read and never once did I feel she was in the back seat of the funeral mass.

One Eulogists was the Principle of the elementary school she worked. His one line made everyone laugh and even the Priest was chuckling away. He said that he sees my Aunt up at the Pearly Gates dressed in her safety vest with her handheld stop sign, directing traffic at the probably crowded entrance to the Gates. He wouldn't even be surprised if she held up her stop sign to an aggressive or pushy person trying to break the order of the line up . Only once everyone was in safely would she take the time to go to the front of the line.

The school is having an assembly next week as the Parents Teacher Committee want to dedicate the afternoon to my Aunt. I'm hoping they will post it online so I get to see it. My Uncle will be in attendance so the kids can share what she meant to so many of them.

I'm crying like a baby as I write this and it is only a small measurement of what she meant to me.

Auntie Nancy, I love you and glad you are no longer in pain and suffering from your illness. I know you know we will all keep in contact with Uncle Fred until you meet again in the future. You will forever be in our hearts and minds.

One last thing that made us all break down and cry, my sister's oldest son who is six, when my sister told him about Auntie Nancy dying, he told my mom to not be sad, Grandma Vicki and Joey (my mom's and dad's dog) would be waiting for her and keep her company.

So I did something tonight that I've always wanted to, but have always kind of just turned away and ignore it.

It happened in a McDonald's of all places

I walk up and a lady asks me to take my order. She is an older lady, by her accent would guess she originally came from Eastern Europe.

Next to me is a man about 55 who has already put in his order and is starting to get louder and louder as he is saying that Canada is giving away all our jobs to the foreigners. He gets louder and says the banks are contracting out Canadian jobs to the Asians. He then says that all the jobs in this country are being taken up by Asians moving here and taking our jobs.

I'm a couple feet away from him and just couldn't tolerate it. As I looked at the staff up front and in the back, a lot are visible minorities. I got close to him and said in a quiet voice that his comments were not appreciated in public.

Next he yells at me that I obviously hate Canadians and probably married to a immigrant.

That was enough! I didn't keep my voice down and told him if he wants to spout his racist views, do it somewhere else. He yells at me 'Do you think I'm a racist?" I tell him based on his speech the last couple of minutes he must be a racist. And it isn't wanted out in the public.

Next he says that he isn't a racist, he just doesn't want foreigners in Canada. I laughed at him and said the view alone is racist. Maybe you should leave the restaurant and go mutter to yourself outside how you don't like anyone other than yourself, because no one wants to hear you anymore.

He turns and leaves and calls me an Asian lover. I let it go since he is leaving.

The lady helping me and then the guy that was helping him both told me thank you. I went and sat down the manager came over and thanked me too. She said I was the first person to stand up to his behaviour which they all have had to put up with.

Funny thing, a much older lady comes in and sits down with him (I would almost guess it was his mother) and he starts to rant that I called him a racist. He is off on another tangent but is still on his racist views. Finally I her her yell STOP. She gets up and comes over to me and tells me that he is a racist and she is glad that someone finally put him in his spot. Then she leaves.

I finished my burger and left myself.

I'm still riled up an hour later! What gives people the right to even think that was in the least bit appropriate in public. I personally want to ship him off to an Arctic Island where he won't be bothered by anyone that isn't his kind. The fact that Canada is a melting pot of immigrants (yes, I'll use the American line ) means he is from somewhere else or at least his parents probably were.

So with more and more countries making progressive steps to equalize rights between homosexual and heterosexual persons, I guess it is unfortunate that there are some countries that will try to reverse that direction.

First, Russia made international news making the promotion or homosexual lifestyle illegal.

Now we have India's Supreme Court overriding a lower court ruling in 2009 that ruled an 1860 law outlawing "carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal".

    Full article here

I have started this here as the topic because it deals with religious and political matters behind the decision.

First off the Supreme Courts overruling the lower Courts decision was on appeal from the religious conservative factions. Also, the government facing an increase in pressure from the right wing conservative religious parties, they are believed to not want to open this subject up before May's national elections.

India is the world's largest democracy. It is a sad affair to say the least, that religion has such an influence on this nation.

It will be interesting to see what kind of reaction the police have, will they enforce the law? What the GLBT community will be doing to increase publicity and pressure for the government to re write the laws? What the international and more specifically the West will do to add international pressure?

Hopefully sounder minds will eventually decide this and the government will make the necessary changes to avoid the courts from taking the nation back 154 years into the past.

For our Indian gay members that will always be 'closer' to what is going on then us in the West, feel free to add into here or start your own blog.

So find it really interesting that this has been a major point of the news of lately.

I have often said that Conservatives up in Canada are probably left of Democrats in the US. Not sure if the US is doing this or speaking out to this degree against Russia but if they are then good on them!

I never knew we took in 100 Gay Iranian refugees from Turkey either

I'll let you read and see what you think.

Not sure if anyone heard, but my home city of Calgary suffered historical flooding just 2 weeks ago. Several surrounding towns and hamlets were devastated as well .

Something happened over the past two weeks that has given me a lot of hope, surprised me and just made me say wow. Although there was several beyond imaginable happenings over this time period, there is one that stood at the forefront in my mind.

Every 1st and 2nd week of July Calgary plays host to the world with the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. Some may call it a fair, an exhibition, a giant party. It bills itself as the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. About 1.2 million visitors plus a year attend the Stampede. Working out to over a 100,000 people a day to visit.

The thing is the Stampede grounds are bordered by the Elbow river, one of the two rivers that flow through Calgary and burst their banks. Above the Stampede, the Elbow was flowing over top of the Glenmore Damn. Needless to say, amongst the 100,000 people evacuated from their homes, the Stampede Grounds were devastated.

There was talk about cancelling the first Stampede in its 101 year history. Something that the great depression, two world wars and numerous other major events could have cancelled the annual party. Just a few days after the flooding, the Stampede announced that they would push ahead with this years Stampede. They would do this without the use of volunteers who would be needed in helping out the communities devastated by the floods. They would use their existing staff and contractors running around the clock. The last thing they wanted to do was take resources, mainly volunteers, away from the community.

Friday morning arrived and 300,000 people attended the Stampede parade the winded its way through downtown Calgary which was also flooded two weeks ago. The grounds then opened and after the parade with only some minor changes due to closures. One of the hardest hit buildings was the Scotiabank Saddledome, our NHL hockey arena that was flooded up to the 13th row of seating and could not open. Four major concerts had to be cancelled.

I spent the past two evenings volunteering down at the Stampede working for a local charity. It was pretty amazing to see the majority of the grounds open again to the visitors only two weeks after the flood.

These images are from last year, but the general idea of the people who attend.

Now for the second of the hope that I mentioned in the title. On 3 different occasions last night, I saw 3 different couples walking down the midway holding hands. All 3 would have been in the 20 to 30 range and very attractive in their jeans, shirts, cowboy hats and boots. One couple even I saw shared a kiss. The thing is all 3 of these couples were two men.

Yes they got some looks from others and I'm sure some behind their backs comments of those gawkers, but they continued on without a worry of being in a predominantly butch tough environment.

When I saw the first one, I thought of pulling out my phone and snapping a picture (probably due to how hot both guys were ) but dismissed it automatically thinking would I snap a picture of a random hetro couple holding hands? Probably not, so decided against it.

I know that Texas has some pretty vibrant gay communities but when I attended the Texas State Fair in Dallas about 8 years ago with 3 other gay guys they had mentioned that there just was some places in Texas that you just don't announce you are gay.

Hopefully someday, more and more this will be a common site across North America. Couples of both sexes being able to publicly show their affections to each others.

If anything, it gave me hope and makes me smile

    http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/dailybrew/toronto-pride-festival-heart-canada-gay-rights-movement-184423222.html

Interesting blog that I thought I would share

Toronto, in the Province of Ontario and has one of the largest Pride Parades in North America is set to have this years Parade with an added addition. The newly elected Premier of Ontario and her wife will be marching in the parade as they have done for several years.

Next year Toronto has been bestowed the honour of hosting the 2014 World Pride Parade.

The main reason I bring this up is the stats that are in the article. When gay marriage was legalized, the majority of Canadians were against it. 10 years later and the majority are in favour of it. I always hoped that the US would find a similar path in gaining equal rights for their gay population.

Wouldn't it be great in 10 years to have the same stats out of the US? Once the general US population realize that the world isn't falling in on them I hope this is achieved.

I applaud SCOTUS for their recent decisions and hope this is the first step of a great journey for true equality be it marriage, employment, housing, and the full gamete of issues that the gay population has face discrimination for years.

So read another article in the newspaper, but this one has most the same information:

    Exodus admits they were wrong

Personally I'm glad there is one less organization that people can turn to and say that they were 'curing' homosexuality.

A couple of pretty amazing statements from the article:

Another quote I saw in the local newspaper but not in the article was that Chambers admitted that they were practicing their beliefs in contrary to what the bible teaches and expects.

So in all my years at GA, this is my first blog that I have done Since it is politically sensitive it had to go here instead of a Lounge topic.

Thursday marked what I consider a monumental change in the way gay rights is viewed in the US.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/05/24/us-usa-boyscouts-ban-vote-idUSBRE94M1A320130524

I personally know of some members here at GA that have tried to help American Scouts to get their Eagle Scout badge after they were kicked out for being gay. So much that they applied to the Boy Scouts of Canada to recognize them for what they surely deserve.

One very interesting part of the article:

I can't help but feel a feeling of hope to see the Church of Latter Day Saints and the United Methodist Church voting in FAVOUR or lifting the ban as a very, very positive step. Hopefully it is a new direction of the LDS church which traditionally opposed any rights of the GLBT community.

The absence of the Catholic Church's opinion is expected as they have agreed that GLBT people are welcomed into the church as long as they don't practice behaviours that the Church frowns on. Although I openly oppose this rule of their Church, by them not opposing it, it appears they are making small strides in what I consider the right direction.

The change.org petition which led the largest corporate sponsors to threaten withdrawal of monetary support (Intel, UPS, etc.) must have had a very major and impacting message to the Boy Scouts of America.

I agree with the final sentiments of the article that the ban on openly gay leaders could fall in the near future. After all the petitions for the removal of the ban on gay scouts garnered 1.8 million signatures against the 250,000 signatures to keep the status quo.

I know it is sometimes hard to recognize some organizations that our community tends to disagree with but I'm willing to congradulate the LDS and UMC for making what I think is a historical first steps towards equality of all with no basis on Age, Gender, Religion and Sexual Identification. Bravo!

    Weekly Wrap Up
Not sure where in the world you are, but Winter has finally arrived here Temperatures reaching highs of -20C / -4F has kept me in a lot and doing a lot of reading instead. Enough about the weather, lets see what happened on the site this week.

Monday we had Cia introduce us to the December CSR Feature. This month we are going to look at Kuragari129's story My Life Started At The End Of The World. If the title doesn't capture your interest then wait until you read the synopsis. Discussion day for this story will be on Monday, December 26th. You have just over 2 weeks to git er done.

Wednesday was the ever popular feature called Ask An Author here on the blog. This is where Renee turns the blog over to Dark for questions presented to authors of our site. This month Dark interviewed albertnothlit, Nephylim, Riley Jericho, and skinnydragon. Not only is it interesting to hear from popular authors but also to learn how they handle writing and making the great stories that they do.

Friday finished up the week with our return to Writing Prompts 542 and 543.These new prompts are good to get the creative juices flowing (hopefully more than molasses in Calgary this week ) and get some interesting ideas and works on the site for everyone to enjoy! Prompt 542 was a creative one using these words - red leaf, turkey, squeaky wheel, pumpkin, and a blue shoe. Prompt 543 was a creative one using the first line of I think it is time for you and I to have a little talk. Lastly Cia featured Hunter Thompson's response from Prompt 539.

Wow, October 2nd already!!! Won't be long until the holidays arrive and we turn the pages to the new year.

This week we started off with C S R Discussion Day and Cia took the time to interview Puppilull and discuss her story Thaw. It is always interesting to see the responses to the hard hitting questions of Cia . The other great thing about C S R Discussion Day is that you the readers get a blog to discuss what is on your mind with the Author. We had a great discussion on Monday.

Wednesday was Re-Visit Reviewing For The Blog. Renee explained to us all the parameters for being on the Blog Review Team. We have a great community of authors and readers. This is your way to give back to the community by volunteering to do a review for the blog. I know the other day I read a review and ended up reading a 20 chapter story that I really enjoyed. Why not help out the team by putting your name forward?

Friday was Prompt Me day and we had double the amount of prompts this week. Second Chance Prompts #475, #477, #479 and #483. Being four of them this week, make sure you stop by and see if any get your writing on. In addition there was a look back at some older responses back to the beginning of the year from Doctor Oger and Timothy M.

    Weekly Wrap Up
The leaves are turning and falling in my neck of the woods. Have they started where you are, or are the leaves just starting to come out as you inch you way towards summer? As the weather chills, I turn to more reading as the days are getting shorter too.

We had a busy week here at GA and with Renee away, I am going to attempt to fill in for her.

Monday, we started off the week with Cia letting us know about the C S R feature for the month of September. Thaw by Puppilull. Make sure you get the chance to read it and then come back for the discussion day on September 26th.

Wednesday was the first one of the month, so we were treated to the ever popular Ask An Author feature by Dark. In entry 42, Dark talked to Andrew Q. Gordon, Nephylim, skinnydragon, and W_L. These are some of my favourite authors, so make sure you check them out. Who knows they might become some of yours.

Friday finished up the week with the challenge being thrown down in Writing Prompts 528 and 529. 528 challenges us to come up with a story involving these words; a zoo, a bright green shirt, a hot dog, a security guard, and torn pants. 529 gave us a tag of the Trip; There is a good news bad news sort of win at your job. There was a trip to the one place you have always wanted to. The trip includes air fare, hotel, and two meals daily. The bad news is the one coworker you can’t stand one the other ticket and will be with you the whole time. You can either go with them or give up the trip of a lifetime. What do you do? Finally Renee shared Mikiesboy response to 527.

Howdy Partners Today is the last day of stampede, so I shall be putting away my Cowboy hat, boots and buckle for another year

Today I want to start the blog off by announcing the Love is Love Anthology is now been published and available for download or purchase of hard copies. Since the tragedy in Orlando, many great Authors and Poets combined together to make an Anthology to bring some hope out of the darkness and celebrate something everyone has in common, Love. Lots of our own Authors and Poets have made contributions to this worthy cause. Make sure you pop by Cazpedroso's Blog to find out more about it.

Back to our regular scheduled programming, we started out on Monday with Aditus bringing our attention to a great story by Parker Owens in our Featured Story this week; A to Z. A great review will give the you more than enough information on piquing your interest in this story.

Wednesday Renee let everyone know about the time of year when you, the Authors and Readers, get the opportunity to tell us what you would like for anthologies for next year! This is the first step of soliciting your help with this task. If you have ideas or suggestions, please visit the Anthology News blog to find out how you can have your say.

Friday, Wayne brought us all 2 new Writing Prompts. Prompt 514 is a creative one with the first line of "Where on earth did you find that?" (If it is a winning lottery ticket, please return it to me as soon as possible ). Prompt 515 is a creative one as well with a theme of a Fairy Tale. Renee also shared with everyone two responses from the previous week. One by Mikiesboy and one by Cia.

    Weekly Wrap Up
First thing, a shout out to my fellow Canucks who are enjoying the Thanksgiving long weekend and stuffing their bellies with turkey. I know this is only relevant to a small number of our Members but I ask all of you to take a moment and think of all the things that you are thankful in your life

Shall we look at the past week in the GA News Blog? Monday started off the week with a compilation of Stories for the C S R Feature. Cia has given us 3 short stories that all are Halloween themed. Bill W, Gee Whillickers and Cynus all have a story that if you get the opportunity to read, can be discussed on the Discussion Day of Monday October 26th.

The first Wednesday of the month had Renee turning over the reins to one of our most favourite features, Ask An Author. Dark brought us questions from you, the Members, to 3 different Authors; aditus, Cia, and wolfwriter. There is not only interesting questions, but interesting answers on this months installment.

Friday wrapped up the week with Comicfan joining us again for this weeks Prompt Me! Wayne has added another prompt by joining with A.C.Benus to challenge anyone who wants to give poetry a try, to attempt a Ballade. Wayne then jumped into two more prompts; first was a first line of 'So tell me all the details' and also 'The Break' on where you might take a vacation. Wayne followed up with a couple of submissions from the previous week by JohnAR and Puppilull.

    Weekly Wrap Up
It appears that Renee is living up to her name this past week and is actually being a Crazy Mountain Lady. So if you were looking for her, you need to look up in the Mountains to find out where she is being crazy

First thing I want to do is an announcement for all. Make sure you don't forget to read Graeme's "The Rainy Day" short story for this month's CSR Discussion Day taking place Monday, September 28th. He'll be answering your questions on the blog at 6 PM New Zealand time (GMT-13) so make sure you get your questions in early if that's not a convenient time for you!

Starting off last week Cia brought us a new Featured Story for the week. Rob Colton's Noah's New Plan was this weeks story. Cia asked several of our Members to provide some reviews that were accumulated and all included in the blog to entice your reading! Kind of different to see various peoples' opinions about one story.

Tuesday had Myr take over the blog and give us the information about the new Political Forum called The Pit. This is a place that has been designated to discuss topics such as politics that have previously not been allowed on site except for the blogs. There are some strict ground rules and you do have to buy a $0.00 membership to post. Hoping it will keep the highly controversial topics off the rest of the site.

Wednesday was a great Interview with the author of Noah's New Plan; Rob Colton. A bit different interview in that Cia asked him about his Wednesday Briefers flash group. I know many of our Authors participate in them, and it is great to see Rob has put out some great stories, and more to come, using this method.

Friday, the prompt Guru Comicfan posted directly to the blog for Prompt Me! The first prompt was a creative one using the words; notebook, pen, coffee, a crystal and a broken light bulb. The second one was using the tag of The Gift. Check out both of them and hopefully will get the creative juices flowing. Finally Wayne shared not 1, nor 2, or 3, but 10 briefs of different authors contributions to the prompts. Lots of them to check out this week.
