machination - Word of the Day - Mon Nov 24, 2025
wildone commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
I wonder at the start of the Industrial Revolution, people were accused of having a machination of mechanician 😮 -
I too, think of a government department opposed to a piece of furniture. Although being the age I am, bureau was not unheard of growing up. Does that mean I am antique and should be on the Antique Roadshow, @Paladin 😮

So the first 2 epis launched today for the new Crave/HBO Max story of two top hockey players breaking into the pro leagues. Oh dear, oh my 😮 If this was 2 chapters submitted to GA, they wouldn't be allowed do the overwhelming amount of sex especially in the first epi. It is a nadian production so you know that they are going all out with the full nudity, less the full monty shot, but the positions of 2 naked in shape guys, leave little to the imagination I'm thinking the 'mercian version of Queer As Folk. Oh me, oh my. I do think that after the first 2 epis they are setting up a relationship, as we are learning more and more about the 2 m/c's.

I'm mad! 😠 I'm irate! 😠 I'm absolutely livid! 😠 So someone told on me!! Told the US that I mistakenly took US Thanksgiving last week instead of the upcoming one. Now my green card lottery entry has been cancelled over it 😮 !!! I can think of one 'tuckian that would have reported me. No not you @astone2292 Okay, just kidding. All above is fictional and untrue. The fact remains that I honestly thought it was this past week that Americans took most of the week off for a Thursday holiday for the second Thanksgiving of the year So once again, may I wish you all the happiest of Thanksgiving and may the Turkey population spring back in time for Christmas. 🦃 Now I hate to stereotype , yet, I'm curious does the 3 big family holidays for your choice of meat change. Now I know there is lots of different religions, beliefs, meals and such which can constitute a family holiday, but I'm talking specifically about Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Up here in Canadia, my family and most of my friends families all ate turkey for all three. Some might interchange a ham in for one or two, usually Christmas or Easter. Thanksgiving usually was always turkey. So here is the question of the week, what is your traditional meat for each of these holidays. Keep it clean you guys!!! Or do you rotate? **sigh** With that all settled, shall we see what happened at the GA News Blog? Monday, Cia dropped by to bring us a new Signature Feature: Tuesday, Myr went looking deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep into Literary Fiction: We did have a blog on a Wednesday this week, we needed to have the Signature Author Excerpt: Jump to Friday, and Cole asked a question that I think many of us ask, sometimes daily? Now you can put it down in words: I know someone who gets up early every morning and takes the same road to give us all the Word of the Day. Bonus points if you got the first 2: concinnity, synecdoche, skepticism, dowdy, abandonment, feisty, wiry Upcoming Writing Events 2025 Prompt Team Event - Find all the information right here. Your legs are so long, you could just throw a leg over the side of a full grown horse and have the stirrups a couple of inches off the ground Don't you usually guide a horse with pressure of you knees on their flanks and a little rein control? What did you do when your knees are like at the top of the legs but below their body?

😮 Ever wake up in the morning and see something and know you have to do something about it? No, I'm not referring to that, guys . I did that this morning. I opened the fridge and I have to admit it was pretty bare. The thing is when you see your bare fridge, you probably going to notice it needs a really good cleaning! So there I am at 8 this morning with everything fitting onto one shelf, and pulling out the other 3 shelves, the two crispers and meat tray, and all the door pockets. Gave everything a good scrubbing and sanitizing, then put everything back together with only one extra piece at the end Luckily it was easy to figure out. Next, to the grocery store and shop for stuffs to put in the fridge! $400 later 😮 😮 Well, that will last me over a month, so it isn't that bad, but it makes me really aware of what the high grocery prices must do to others. I do have to admit, that $30 went to buying 3-$10 food bank hampers as I'm aware that not everyone has the money for food Speaking of food! I guess my American cousins are getting ready fo the second Thanksgiving this year . We had ours up in Canadia about a month ago. So any big plans for the holiday? Do you have family coming over? So a survey just revealed, and really, if you needed a survey, then I'm speechless, they say that the two topics to avoid at all costs at a big dinner is politics and religion. Hence why why we only allow those two topics in the Pit So if anyone decides to broach either subject, just politely tell them they have to go to the Pit for 20 mins. Anyhow, I hope anyone celebrating the Thanksgiving loooooooooooooooooong weekend, you have a great time, great food, great friends and great family. If you work and cannot attend anything, do like I did all those years working my way up the ladder, and hit up the local deli and get some fresh sliced turkey breast, maybe some thick sliced bacon, a fresh bun, slap some mayo on it, and make yourself a nice turkey club for dinner . Now I'm not sure if you have heard the buzz on the site of late!!! There is a return of a popular contest that we are having again this year. Val and Aditus have come back with the Prompt Team Event. Make sure to check out Friday's blog for all the deets! Lets jump into Monday, where we had an all new review from our super duper Review Team: Tuesday, Myr was looking at History: Thursday was Val's first blog of the week where she looked at upcoming Special Events in 2026. Some interesting comments ensued: Finally it was Friday. Val told us all about the upcoming Prompt Team Event! Check it out first and then write to get your prompt topic. Let's have some fun with this: We did get to challenge our vocabulary, some more than others. I sometimes think this must be really helpful to our authors that maybe English isn't their mother tongue. I'm sure this helps them out to see if they can incorporate some new words into their writing. acrid, lambaste, ashen, disparity, poacher, incentive, gossamer (10 bonus points if you knew the last one ) Upcoming Writing Events 2025 Prompt Team Event - Find all the information right here. Happy 2nd Tuesday of the Month. I like when this happens; when the Review Team Members turn on themselves Well, maybe not turn. Moreso write a review on each others. Enjoy!! True As It Can Be by W_L Reviewer:chris191070 Status: Complete Word Count: 80,310 This is a modern interpretation of the classic fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast. We have Brad, who because of events has become isolated, self-destructive and beastly. But he begins to change when he rescues Beau, a small kindhearted student with no family or friends. Those are the main characters, but the other residents of Keller Hall are just as important, as you'll discover they have all suffered misfortune in their lives. The main enemy is an individual called Gary; he is an individual that you don't want to mess with. This isn't an easy story to read in parts, but it is so well written that you really get drawn into the lives of all the characters. It is a dark story that features some difficult storylines, but the author leaves it to the individual reader, rather than going into graphic detail. Is it cold in your neck of the woods 🥶 I heard it was getting below zero (32F) in southern parts of the US of A 😮 In November! I imagine I'm going to hear from our Florida contingent that it is getting down to 70F in the evenings So an interesting week has come to a close. Scratch that, it wasn't an interesting week. It was kind of the 2nd week of November blah week. Now if it was your birthday, then I missed the bright, shiney happiness of the week! You should have included me to lift me up. Oh, maybe it is the just the time/week of the year 😮 Question of the week: Have you participated in using the new Mood function yet? I"ve only had 2 so far Constipated 💩 and Cheeky I think I like Cheeky better Oh, before I forget, I know a lot of countries around the world have a celebration on Tuesday the 11th. Remembrance Day in Canada, Veteran's Day in the US, also known as Armistice Day in the UK. So I implore all of you to think of those currently serving, or have served in the past, living or gone forever, and give a moments of reflection at 11th hour on the 11th day. Maybe there is a second question of the week. My grandfather served in WWII, by great uncle was a Sgt. Major in WWII and toured the concentration camps in Europe My dad was in the military, army like his dad and uncle, never saw active warfare but served in the UN peaceforce back in Cypress, and the Sinai Peninsula (Egypt/Israel), then a few tours, at the time West Germany, where I was born , as part of the NATO Force. I'm not looking for political statements here, but just a deep recognition of people who have put their lives on the line for all of us. No matter what side. So tell us about a person you know that served their country with honour . Now onto the Wrap Up Cia started the week off with the CSR Feature of Month. November : Then Myr was up with a Deep Dive looking at General Fiction: Thursday, was a big day! Val wrapped up the ever so successful yearly anthology. 23 stories, ,way to go Authors!!! YAWN You know what? I could use another hour of sleep tonight Yes, in North America it is that time of the year where if you have such a thing as Daylight Savings Time, it is coming to an end in a few hours. I do find it funny that since tonight we are getting an extra hour of sleep, so to speak, there is less bitching than if we were losing an hour Oh sorry, putting forth a compelling argument without any emotion involved. Is that better? Yesterday was Halloween 😮 Did you dress up, and if so, what as? No, it did not get sheet faced, much to the disappointment of some people here. I think I ask this yearly, so I will ask again, how many trick-or-treaters did you get? I"m keeping a yearly total to see if the numbers are going up or down One friend mentioned he picked up a couple of the 50 box of mini chocolate bars and he went through them all. His roommate came home with like a box of 30 full size chocolate bars. He said they mainly get teenagers so he got the bigger bars. End of night, no big bars got handed out to big kids, so they are in his bedroom for snacking For some reason I can't stop yawning 🥱. Not that you all are boring me . Okay, so a nice quiet week for me to wrap up, but still a big week in what was done on the GA News Blog. Tuesday, Myr went a diving. I wonder if he ever swims above Niagara Falls . Now what was I talking about a big week? Well this is the final week of our very well participated in Yearly Anthology: Creature Feature. I'll just comment that a few chapters ago everyone was guessing where the two police cars were going that blew past Trace and Joel in the Truck. So it wasn't donuts or going to arrest Wesley, but now we find out that Jonny Lundst was arrested for dealing pills 😮 Trust me, I missed that one when it came up in this chapter. Even when I asked her what the significance of the police cars were when first written and were they just in there for word count I'm surprised I survived making that accusation . Sneaky Krista

Whoa! Stop the clock!! Who said we could be a week left in October already 😮 I mean, less than a week to Halloween 🎃, 4 weeks from 'merican Thanksgiving, 2 months away from Christmas🎄. When did summer end? Oh wait, we've had our first snowfall already but where I live that can happen 12 months a year Speaking of Halloween... next Friday! Any plans for you? I live in a secured building, no it is not a prison 🔐 . We don't get kiddies trick-or-treating, so not going to buy any candy this year. I usually give in to a weakness and buy something that I shouldn't have but end up taking way too much insulin to combat against . Not this year! How about going out? Some of you must have children or grandchildren. Do you go trick-or-treating with them? Or what is the age that kids stop trick-or-treating nowadays? Seemed back in my day, people didn't appreciated 13 or 14 y/o's ringing their doorbell and telling them you were dressed as surly teenagers Or do you go to a mall, or community centre? Curious minds want to know!! Today I was flipping through a streaming channel up here in Canada called Crave, and found the original 90210 series. I told someone that it reminded me of my teens. They called me out on that statement so I said I was 20 when it came on out in 1990 . Maybe I was 22 I see we are 3 weeks into the Yearly Anthology, and my spy deep in the GA Anthology network has told me that it was not the last week of stories! So how many weeks to go, 1, 2, 3, maybe 4? You guess. Speaking of stories, how are you making out on reading them? Also, I know some of you are die hard Anthology fans, and reading as much as possible, so bravo Do you park any writing you are doing, or reading stories that you are engrossed in to read them? Just curious . Now to check on what Cia did on Monday... Oh, this was a week where the Monday's GA Blog was on hold for the Yearly Anthology. So you got 2 days of my last Weekly Update . I hope Cia took the day to go to a spa and soak in a natural hot spring, get a massage, facial, manicure, pedi and more! Me thinks that did not happen Myr checked in on Tuesday for a look at a Deep Dive again this week: Then it was Val's turn to wrap things up and announce the week 3 Yearly Anthology Stories! Myr was a busy little beaver, pumping out 7 new Words of the Day. One week was in the books, and now, so is the second week! I'm talking about snow storms No, I'm talking about the Yearly Anthology. I know a few of you read all the stories after week 1, have you done so after week 2? I"m going to keep tonight short and sweet I have an overnight guest , and it isn't Brad . So quick question for GA Land, how many of the anthologies have you read so far? Jumping right into what happened the past week, we had some interesting blogs. Monday, we had a great review brought to us by @W_L. Lots of great comments on the story and the author: Tuesday, Myr got his hardy, har, har on, when he did this Deep Dive: Thursday, it was time for Round Deux of the Yearly Anthology: Creature Feature: Okay, it was a short week for the Weekly Blog . Featured Story: What Happened To The Baxter Boys by Mancunian

It seems like October is nearly over but today is still the second Monday of the month. That means that @W_L did a great review on a story that definitely has my interest! What Happened To The Baxter Boys by Mancunian Reviewer: W_L Status: Complete Word Count: 80,270 This reads like a British balm for a weary gay soul—comforting, warm, and restorative. If you’re trudging through a bad day, numbed by apathy, or worn down by the headlines, this story offers a steady smile and a reminder that kindness still matters. It’s less about gritty plots of these vulnerable characters than grace they receive: a gentle reprieve that prioritizes tenderness, community, and the small wins that keep people moving through the dark. I picked it up because it treads ground I first encountered in Suki Fleet’s This Is Not a Love Story, which follows homeless queer teens in a much harsher London environment. Suki Fleet’s novel is brilliant but emotionally pulverizing; by the end, you will need to crawl with your last ounce of strength towards the light of hope. By contrast, Mancunian’s What Happened to the Baxter Boys is lighter on the spirit and, set in Manchester, feels less brutal in tone. The setup—brothers Charlie and Michael finding a family with the help of Max and Stacy—won’t surprise seasoned readers, but its familiarity is part of the charm. Even if the arc is idealized, there’s something genuinely healing about watching these boys catch a break, and the story delivers that respite without apology. Though there are moments of conflict, homophobia, and human malice in this universe; these elements are minor points in the overall narrative. Overall, it’s a good, heartwarming read—ideal when you’re seeking comfort. . And since reading that, I have been calling it stink weed since that is a flower, isn't it? The only thing she doesn't bring up is the smell just kidding Never met one to know if is smells or not. Titan Arum (Corpse Flower) Native to the equatorial rainforest of Central Sumatra in Western Indonesia, the Titan Arum is considered to be the smelliest flower in the world! As the name suggests, this flower apparently smells like a rotting corpse. Thankfully, the flowers only bloom every 4-6 years and only last for about 24-48 hours at a time. The smell of rotten flesh, however, lingers in the air for days afterwards. The Titan Arum flower can stretch to 3 metres and is actually not one flower but thousands of tiny flowers which botanists call infloresence.

Rain, rain, go away and come back another day Why you ask? They said such rain may just turn into the s*** word overnight While some people might be laughing their heads off, all I can wish on them is to have a long, damp, wet, rainy, cold winter You know who you are So a big huge thank you to Cia, my favourite admin the past 2 weeks , for helping me out with the Weekly Wrap Up. I'm glad you all showed her your love I was off to Vancouver for a week to visit with family and friends, and the one consistent thing was that I ate too much food. All meetings of cousins, aunt and uncle, and some lifelong friends seemed to involved food Although the scale may not be clicking higher for now. I better get in a exercise routine before the winter sets in and all I want to do is hibernate. I wonder if a certain bear in Sweden is getting tired yet🧸. Now I know we have a great range of readers of the Weekly Wrap Up, but I want to know no matter what age you are, would you consider yourself a fit person, and if so, what do you do to stay in shape? Are you 80 years old and up at 4 am to do a 5 mile jog daily? Are you 20 years old and can eat a restaurant out and just watch people work out and your metabolism speeds up enough to burn all those calories off? If you don't want to say if you are in shape or not, don't worry about it Enough babbling by me, we had a busy week, I think, at the GA News Blog, so let's check in! Monday, Cia was into wrap up September with the CSR Discussion Day. Did you read and participate? Tuesday, Myr had to wear his fur lined cowboy boots and cowboy hat down to the lake to go for his Deep Dive: Thursday, Valkyrie got out her typewriter and banged out an article on looking back and looking forward to our Special Events: Friday, she was back again, with another couple of prompts for us to explore: Words of the Day. I can finally answer something without feeling like I might give something away Back from Chapter 3: I think Joel thinks of the truck as one more thing that he doesn't want to remember from a better time of his life I kept telling Krista that by day 2, the Conely's should have had a nice, shiney, red Mustang in the driveway for Joel, so he could compete with the twins Charger and Colts shiny truck She didn't go for it

Oh, I did not see your story go to the proof reading team yet. I do believe that is a requirement in the rules. I volunteer to change edit your story for you. Look at me, I give, give, give -
Not sure if other countries have this already, but might be an interesting journey. Starts Oct 8 in Canada. Yeah, since it is a gay marine, my interest is piqued Here is the write up: Boots — Oct. 9 Starring Parenthood alum Miles Heizer, Boots is a comedic drama set in the Marine Corps in the 1990s, when it was illegal to be gay in the military. The show is inspired by former US Marine Greg Cope White’s memoir, The Pink Marine. Closeted Cameron Cope (Heizer) is among a group of recruits, with his best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), the son of a decorated Marine. Before enlisting, Cameron lived with his narcissistic mother, Barbara (Vera Farmiga). Max Parker plays Sgt. Sullivan, who has been decorated for valour on several top-secret missions, but he sees himself in Cameron and tries to prepare him boot camp.

Ah, but Jason, if you read any of CJames other tales, he is a very technical writer. Personally myself, I like that. Also makes me worried about if he might have a bomb hiding in his back yard . I guess the great thing is, that you don't like the technical details, you can skip over them. Kind of like what I do with most sex scenes . But that is more how many ways can you say insert body part A into body part B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I... In a way, I do feel I'm more educated after reading his stories. But to each their own, that is what is great about the comments .

Happy Fall, or Spring depending on your hemisphere Not sure about you, but we are sitting about 6-10 degrees Celsius above our normal temperatures. Now before you all say it is all the hot air coming from me, we can test that theory. I left for Vancouver on Saturday morning. Thank you Cia for putting in the stories this week and doing the wrap up next week . So we will see if Calgary cools off, and Vancouver heats up. Actually that would be good for the ego as I think I could say I'm hot Before I hear it all from some of you, I'm meeting up with a friend named Brad, and probably have some drinks. To keep certain people quiet, I'm going to say we will not go to a pub, maybe a bar, a lounge, a restaurant, a roadhouse, a microbrewery. Anything but a pub . A lot of people love the fall due to the trees changing colours in the more northern climates, before they are buried beneath 6 feet of s***. I'm not sure if I"ve asked this before, probably did but I'm too lazy to go through all the past blogs to find out. What is your favourite season and why? Mine would be winter. Especially after a snow fall when everything is nice and white and pristeen. If by chance it is cold out, the sound carries much further than any other season. You can hear someone pop open a beer from a mile away Oh, did I tell you that you now have UNDER 2 WEEKS to get your 2025 GA ANTHOLOGY submitted to the proof team by October1st. Shall we be like a teenager and wrap it up? I really need to start using my calendar and putting in reminders to do the Weekly Wrap Up Either that or retire and go to one of the homes that someone keeps pressuring me to go to My apologies for being late again.
