@Summerabbacat has summed up my thoughts and expressed them much more eloquently than I would have! Owain's counsel to Colin is precisely what is needed: he can't change the attitudes of his mother and brother. He just has to live with them and not give them any more power over him. He needs to continue what he's been doing and accept that it is their loss if they don't recognize and respect him for what he has accomplished and who he is! So many things I'm looking forward to discovering: Joe's play; what the actual amount Owain and Mhairi will receive and what they will each do with their inheritance; when will Colin finally move in. Great chapter!!

Phil started high school 2 years before I did, but we both experienced the same cultural ideas. We both went on to marry and have a son. My relationship with my son is not the same as Phil's, thankfully. We were both school counselors! I believe he was seeing Bobby in his mind's eye. I could totally envision this. The story is speaking volumes to me!

Thomas put into words (via @Robert Hugill) what I have felt about missionary work: it is another form of colonialism - saying that there is a "better or more proper" way of thinking and doing things. It does seem disrespectful to any indigenous group, failing to experience life as they do. Change should come from personal experience, not from an experience forced upon one. I love the pace at which Thomas and Keith are developing their relationship. Keith is remarkably open to new things in part because of the way he learned from Colin.

Colin 13: Pictures & Gardens
pvtguy commented on Robert Hugill's story chapter in Colin 13: Pictures & Gardens
All these possibilities about the money and the history of Owain's and Mhairi's ancestors - when will some of the answers come along? In the meantime, there is growing a real family with Owain, Colin, Mhairi and Joe! The interaction between Owain and Colin is getting tighter and more comfortable. I hope to see Colin moving in sooner than he is planning. -
I love the innocence and mutual openness to each other charming. While Thomas is more "experienced" in the physical aspects, he is just as much a neophyte in love as is Keith. Beautiful story well told!

I can understand Devin's concern with his height - I had my growth spurt at 12 and have been the same height since! It took me a while to simply accept that I would not grow any more...actually, when measured at the doctor's office recently, I found out I've actually shrunk a half-inch, but I refuse to accept that, lol! I am confused as to why Devin has to get permission from his father to "grow" a few inches. Did he stop growing once he went through the ceremony to become a skinwalker? The rest of the chapter was light and very informative. I can only ditto the comments above.

I agree with @Tris:first times (and many still happen occasionally even at my age!) -were accompanied with the feelings I mentioned above at early ages (I was 15 with first experience ). Firsts today are most accompanied with curiosity and wonder whether there might be a second time - good or bad - lol!
-
Just wondering how many "first times" were tainted with a combination of excitement, pleasure or pain, guilt, questioning? Also, as I was raised in a Roman Catholic household and went to a Catholic high school, sex in any form before marriage to a woman was a sure-fire ticket straight to hell (I'm sure this view was not limited to Catholics!), how much did this play into the guilt/questioning? As a child of the 50's and 60's, it certainly was a different time than today, thank Goodness! I know I carried a lot of guilt for a long time!

Joe is much more mature than his mother realizes. While it may be somewhat instructive to know more about the relationship between Grandfather and son, it also may lead to naught. It may well resemble the relationship between Owain and his father. I love that Colin is growing more comfortable with himself. Perhaps Joe's and Mhairi's acceptance of him are contributing factors, but the biggest source of encouragement is Owain. Well done again, @Robert Hugill!

Keith is finding that the more he is honest, the more comfortable he is with himself. He's learning who real family are. Excellent chapter story-wise, but so wonderfully written with such beautiful prose and colloquialisms!
-
I can understand how Owain is nervous about Joe staying with him: he doesn't truly understand the behavior of a 17 year old and wants to make his stay a positive experience. Having lived alone for so long, he is, as Colin pointed out, truly self-contained. I find myself to be so too - and I hadn't labeled myself but this truly described me as well! The research may well reveal things about the family that will be very instructive. That their grandfather was an arms maker only serves to show a different mindset than they have now. He responded to his times as Owain and Mhairi are doing so now.

It seems Abbie has at least three very interested in him: Jonny, Ralph and Dani. Let's see where this goes!

Such a great start! I immediately resonated with Phil in many ways: I was married, have a son whom I raised alone after the age of 10, was a teacher for 11 years then school counselor for 36 years for the same reason Phil stated (to be a source for all students where they could feel comfortable enough to talk whatever was on their minds and feel supported)...and now here I am nearly 76 years old! Thankfully, no stroke and living in a nursing home, but wow! I admire your writing and this looks like a real keeper!

I actually have enjoyed the slow build-up - it is allowing for a deeper connection building rather than "instant" love. Keith is developing the self-confidence to own up to being himself to everyone.

They are getting more and more comfortable with each other! Enjoying a holiday with another takes a really comfortable relationship and Owain and Colin have certainly found a mutually acceptable spot. Loved this chapter!
-
So alive with visions as though looking from your back porch and seeing all this!
-
I love how expressive you are with phrases such as: Only this time Keith was shittingly nervous.... I know I've felt like this before but never put it into such apt description! I love how they are discovering each other and becoming comfortable with themselves!

The comments are spot on! I would be somewhere between Owain and Colin on a visit: I would love to know how people live in such a place, in buildings that are very old and built for a lifestyle so different than what we are accustomed to today. As for the architecture/art of the buildings, I would admire that for sure, but not to the detail I suppose Colin is doing. And if I can attend music concerts, operas, orchestral and organ concerts - wow! You provide a great vehicle for living vicariously! Thanks.

You've certainly grabbed my interest! So much packed in this chapter: religion, small town workings, free thinking among rigid thinking, wonderful characters and an intriguing plot! I am certainly looking forward to see where this story goes!

Keith is experiencing a whole new world with wonder and amazement. I do hope Thomas helps expand that experience!

Mum is softening. That she followed through to get a teen to help with the routine gardening is a major step for her! Storm clouds are on the horizon with Miles and Analisa. Of to Italy and some much needed fun!

@Andre Delport: you said, they do NOT dine like that at home, where meals are generally centred around the children. and are usual reasonably well balanced meals. - if spaghetti bolognaise et al can be considered balanced. What's not balanced? You have protein (meat), starch (spaghetti), vegetables (onions, celery, carrots), fruit (tomatoes)....a perfect food as far as I am concerned, lol!

Chapter 167 The Cat's Whiskers
pvtguy commented on Dodger's story chapter in Chapter 167 The Cat's Whiskers
Robbie has outgrown Nathan but hasn't realized it yet. Nathan is so immature. This was a most welcome chapter. I'm eager to see what is really going on with Don...lots to learn yet about the trust, his infidelity... -
I want to live that lifestyle! They are so down to earth, humble, generous and caring - models for how we are all to be. And such devoted parents! I had to laugh out loud at the bedroom scene with Jamie's question and Ryan's very quick, but truthful, answer. It may not have been totally filled with all the details, but it satisfied the curiosity for the moment and very age appropriate!
-
Keith so reminds me of myself...not even admitting to himself and then accepting the term "gay". Wonderful chapter. Looking forward to see what might develop with Thomas.
