  1. Appropriately for Valentine's Day, the historic event with the most personal import that I can think of right now is California Supreme Court's [not-long-lasting] legalization of marriage between any two people.
  2. Thanks folks Time for me to dig out my walking stick and rocking chair and start yelling at you kids to keep off my grass.
  3. As far as I know, I have no extended relatives who are gay. Out of 3 aunts, 1 uncle, 1 half-uncle, and 13 cousins, none are gay. I have 5 nieces and nephews and some number of cousins-once-removed who are mostly too young for them to know.
  4. I use OpenOffice when I'm editing someone's work, but for my own stuff, I use "vi", the plain Unix text editor.
  5. I know that in 4th grade - I was 9 or 10 - I was already having "naughty" thoughts about other boys, about being naked with them watching me and stuff, and not understanding at all the thrill I was getting out of it. Even as young as 7 or 8, my going-to-sleep make believe world would usually include me and my best friend at the time Brett getting married and living happily ever after. I never thought about my girl friends, only Brett, or occasionally another boy friend. (Even now, thinking back on it, it's hard for me to type "girl friend" without remembering the teasing I got about having girlfriends. Grade school boys are cruel!) It took me until 7th grade (12ish) to realize what it meant about the naughty thoughts about other boys (and the other actions that had started going along with them). I repressed it, though, and in high school even went so far as to start calling one of my friends my girlfriend, until she caught me at it and gave me a tongue-lashing I'll never forget. I didn't actually have sex, with anyone, until I met the guy who is now my husband, so I can't speak to that part of it. But yeah, I was definitely having the feelings, whether I admitted it or not, as far back as I have clear memories. - dfp
  6. Congrats to both of you! I <3 <3
  7. Best thing EVER happened in 2008: I got married! <3<3<3 Still need to wait for the court decision in March to see what happens, but we did it. Other than that, my first ever visit to Yosemite National Park happened during the summer, and the new digital camera I got for a wedding gift
  8. Hey, happy hatching day, Pete!
  9. I enjoyed it. You've got the hints of some nice themes running through it, and it's got a reasonably good sense of timing and pacing throughout. Transcribe it, clean it up, and play it without the few mistakes, and it'd be something I'd be happy to have in my collection.
  10. My husband and I drive a midnight-blue 2008 toyota prius. It's the second prius we've owned, after I totalled the first one The first one was silver, my color choice; the midnight-blue is my husband's color. I wanted red this time, but got outvoted. Anyway, I love the prius. I like getting good gas mileage in a car that has reasonable storage and people capacity and is so comfortable to sit in for long drives.
  11. My answer to this question would depend on when it was asked. When I was growing up? I would have taken it in a heartbeat - if I could have gotten the pill without letting anyone else know. There was no way I wanted to be gay, both because I knew how evil it was from everyone else who ever talked about it, and because I knew my mom wanted grandkids so much. After I came out and met my then-boyfriend in the span of a week (now my husband, assuming the prop 8 stuff doesn't change that), I have no need of anything like this.
  12. Sorry for the "obvious scifi"-ish names. Club/bar names: The Lonely Starman The Cockpit The Velvet Nebula Singularity Lounge Last Resort The Cluster The Black Hole (er, in the seedier parts of the station...) Band names: Total Eclipse Ethernauts Triplanetary (with respects to Dr. E. E. Smith)
  13. Is this for a story? Need some more context - what part of the country (or what country in general) is this in, what kind of music do the clubs play, what kind of music do the boy bands play, etc.
  14. Thanks everyone
  15. When I write, it's because I end up with all these pieces of storyline, character, setting, etc. floating around in my head for days and I can't sleep or concentrate on stuff until I get them written down. ... but when I then go and publish 'em, it's because I'm hoping to hear a few oohs and ahhs.
  16. Never mind, I was wrong - it was not a shared-world story like I thought. I found it on Nifty, from 2002 - Bathys by Nial Thorne.
  17. Hello all, I'm trying to remember a shared-world story I ran across years ago, about an underground city built a mile under the surface of the Earth. I don't remember if the stories ever got started, I just remember finding (on the web) the premise and descriptions of various parts of the underground world. I know this isn't a lot of info, but does anyone else remember any more about this? Thanks in advance, - dfp
  18. Heh, interesting toy. I ran this on the four completed parts of my "Summer Love" story, and ended up with #1 and #4 getting marked female by a wide margin, and #2 and #3 getting marked male by a wide margin. I didn't think I was that conflicted... - dfp
  19. Not that I write very often, but when I do, most of the time my main character is some projection of myself into a different reality. It's not easy for me to "get inside the head" of some random character I create; it's much easier to say "this is me if I'd grown up in such-and-such an environment". Although, in my submission for Ghosts, my main character is entirely fictional, and I have a cameo appearance as myself (with a different name of course) - dfp

  21. Thanks, everyone, for all the well-wishes! Wedding and dinner are now over, so it's time to go relax for a while
  22. July 17, 1991 - Forever begins July 17, 2008 - Forever begins again Today, I'm getting married to the most wonderful man I've ever known. We met 17 years ago when a mutual friend pushed us together, asking each of us to comfort the other. We fell in love within the first hour of speaking to each other on the phone. An hour after that, I was making plans to drive the 200 miles from my college to his college to see him the next day. That day, July 17, 1991, I gave my heart to him. This morning at 10am PDT, I get to do it legally. Thanks to the California Supreme Court's ruling of May 15, 2008, it is unconsistitutional in the state of California to bar marriage licenses from gay men and women, on the grounds that (summarized) civil ceremonies are an equal but separate institution and therefore violate the state constitution. Today, on the 17th anniversary that my fiance' and I have been together, we are getting married. I am the happiest man alive right now. And the most nervous.
  23. I came here because of DomLuka and got hooked on the stories of several authors, so my main reason is "The Regular Stories". I also added in "other" to reflect the learning-to-write that I get from here, despite the rarity of the writing thing on my part. - dfp
  24. I've been using "darkfox" since mid-1991, but ran into conflicts with someone else (who started using the name after me ) and so ended up changing over to "darkfoxprime" for forums and such. "darkfox" came from an online roleplaying system I was part of. The characters were all anthropomorphized animals, and at the time I was playing a fox named "quickfox" who's primary characteristics were an overabundance of energy and-a-tendency-to-go-for-whole-paragraphs-without-taking-a-break-or-a-breath-and-without-using-spaces-and-sometimes-without-ending-sentences-as-long-as-he-could-keep-his-train-of-thought-going. Then I got hit by a massive dose of depression, and as I dropped towards being suicidal I changed quickfox into darkfox, who was basically posessed by a bloodthirsty demon, couldn't handle sunlight, fed off of negative emotions, and basically wanted to tear the living heart out of anyone around him and eat it. That ended when I met my 17-year-partner-now-fiancee', and darkfox fell in love.
  25. Oh - after 17 years already, I'm sure we'll be together long enough I'm just worried about the constitutional amendment proposition that will be on the november ballot.
