    Jared and Cade are both stupid. An unloaded rifle is an expensive club. Even if they had seen those raidersbefore they announced themselves, Jared wouldn't have been able to get ammo fast enough. Cade wanting to go to Meridian to 'find the truth' is even dumber. And telling the truth now after the raiders is more toxic.

    I knew it was a mistake for Jared to hide he had been with the raiders. Waiting has made it worse. Sable not being able to turn his ability off is a big problem. Someone will talk and an all out hunt will start. They should be running away from Meridian than toward it.

    Shem has arrived at this capital city at the brink of its fall. The hollowing out has begun at the center. Tair should be called Despair. This is a place to flee before the blood starts flowing like water. Shem seems to be the catalyst for the last remnant of power to leave while no one is looking. He is a most unlikely savior or hero, and his sheer veneer of ordinary is a shield of invisiblity.

    The lesson with the rifle revealed part of Jared's past. Cade knows now Jared is like him and Jared can see Cade's own interest in him. Cade can also see Jared exhibiting the same protectiveness he has toward Sable. They have already formed a family unit. Now they must tread the uncertain ground of the first outside settlement Cade an d Sable have seen. I think Jared should have schooled them more on what to expect and what not to share.
