  1. I am reminded of the joke about the man at an evangelical meeting being caught up in the frenzy and stood up to confess all his sins. As he did so they shouted out, "Tell it all brother. Tell it all." He hept going and suddenly there was absolute silence. Then the preacher said, "Brother, I don't believe I would've told that one."
  2. I have never, ever heard of a boscage.
  3. A desperate cry into the void for help. And almost impossibly it was heard. The one thing Vane might be vulnerable to. Notice.
  4. If it could also make a cup of tea, Andrew would be thrilled.
  5. Dufresne massively frigged up. Never underestimate what Tanaka knows. Perfect wedding gift! Time for a carefully brewed cup of artisanal green tea.

Well, he's not happy to be in a box as he calls it. The question is what is the box? Is it just money or is it conditional love?

    Chapter 1

Those big ol' lug soles wouldn't miss many.
  8. It could be worse. Could be an Authentic Beedle Wig. They look like a really bad toupee.

Either way there is a deadline enforced by two hundred years of empirical evidence. They know exactly how long Lucien can last before he must feed. The clock ticks on.

I agree. I do ike Adrian. I hope for some kind of redemption arc. What concerns me is we are at the four year mark and there are no other new candidates yet, which leaves Eli on the hook.

Who says they have to be impaired? They get invited to a society ritual and don't know until the last minute. Adrian knows a spell which restrains Lucien. Is it too much to believe an ordinary human can be compelled in the same way?

Being a member of the founding families, he knows students are selected and killed. Conspiracy to commit murder or being involved in an ongoing conspiracy makes him complicit. He knows it happens, yet he carries on. I think it's particularly vile he's so friendly with Eli knowing he might be food.

No need to. We've been told time after time Eli analyzes and files everything. He knows.

Hasn't Eli himself carefully filed the possibility in his ordered mind?

    Chapter 1

Johnny is a fierce, little protector. He doesn't understand the draw to his new friend yet, but he will in time. His dad sees and God bless him he loves his son absolutely. Emmett's step-dad needs to be the dance floor for a few rounds of the steel toed boot stomp. God I love steel toed boots. Men who beat helpless kids are men in name only.

Not so bold. Adrian is there. He is the bleeder and one of the ones chanting the binding spell. The chapel belongs to the Leclaires specifically. We know Adrian doesn't like doing it. It's a point in his favor. Could Eli persuade him to leave? Maybe. There's a lot we still don't know. Who did it before Adrian? If I had to guess, I'd say his mother is the Leclaire since his father is estranged. But we don't know. With a feeding schedule of every four years, it's possible not all of them were there. But the founders know the cost well and so do some of the others.

By Lucien's own words, Adrian is a Leclaire and their presence holds the binding in place. So yes, he has to die.

Eli ceased being an observer when he first opened the trap door and now he is much further on the path. "People will need to be killed, Eli." It should horrify such a quiet boy, but he is analytical instead. The Vespers are murderers. They've used Lucien, imprisoned and starved him for two centuries. This is karma coming home to them. How will he hide what he has become when they return?
  19. The vast gulf between sending and doing.
  20. Actually, after some thought, a carefully staged auto-erotic asphyxiation with some salacious naked male photos scattered about would fix him up proper.
  21. Birthing was used in prisons, usually a bundle of five branches or twigs.
  22. Vane is a true monster. In Carter's place, it would have been hard not to put him down.
  23. Marine drill instructors are well known for their asperity.
  24. The long pause is a remarkably effective interrogation technique.
  25. A couple are sitting in church. The woman leans over and says, "I just let out one of those silent ones. What should I do?" "Change the battery in your hearing aid."
