George's reputation precedes him and they're worried about this minor wine smuggling operation they have going. The sycophantic oaf Campbell caught on to it, so there's no way George would miss it. George is pragmatic and couldn't care less about a little wine. He's also not Bertie. He's willing to overlook it, but he won't take a bribe.

How did they track them to such an isolated place? My second question is why did the soldiers leave? It's obvious they're close by and it's 'well they're here somewhere, let's go.'
