Well, I no sooner finish my post above and turn to the local newspaper, than I find the Federal Congress is jumping into the game. Tennessean article.

Speaking of higher taxes on gasoline, everyone should be on the lookout for their state legislature to raise gas taxes. The lower prices provide an excellent opportunity to sneak in more revenue for the state. This is not intended to be a political comment, certainly not partisan. Just be alert.

This may have a huge negative impact on the US economy. If the price of oil keeps falling, extraction operations will cease because the price is below the cost of production...jobs will be lost. That fracking boom in North Dakota will collapse. Regular gas is going for as low as $1.789 here.
