  1. Not to start an argument, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Your Queen has no executive power, Zombie. That leaves only the ceremonial. If she serves as an experienced sounding board for the PM, then that is a worthwhile function. The US has a parallel to the Queen's commissioning function. When I joined the US Army, I swore to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." (Some have described the Constitution as our sovereign.) When I became an Second Lieutenant, I became "an officer and a gentleman by act of Congress", Congress having the commissioning power under the Constitution. ~~~~~ Who has another challenge for us?

  4. I have to agree with Foopy on Facebook and Twitter. What invasive time wasters they are! I would go with Matt's list, substituting Wiktionary.org for Facebook: 1.) Google 2.) Wikipedia 3.) Wiktionary 4.) YouTube 5.) Netflix Seriously, many authors on this site should make extensive use of Wiktionary.org. It is the best dictionary found anywhere. It's always at your fingertips. It's free. It will improve your writing.
  5. Very well, Podga. A- it is.
  6. Very good, Podga! The nine European Monarchs were gathered at Windsor Castle on May 20, 1910 for the funeral of King Edward VII of the UK. Standing, from left to right: King Haakon VII of Norway, King Ferdinand of Bulgaria, King Manuel of Portugal, Kaiser Wilhelm II of the German Empire, King George I of The Hellenes (Greece) and King Albert I of the Belgians (Belgium). Seated, from left to right: King Alfonso XIII of Spain, King-Emperor George V of Great Britain and King Frederick VIII of Denmark. Numerous other dignitaries participated in the funeral procession, including princes and princesses, dukes and duchesses, and prominent commoners such as former President Theodore Roosevelt of the US. The picture is historically significant because it is the last such gathering that ever occurred. By 1918, many of the crown heads had lost their kingdoms as a result of the Great War (World War I). By 1945 and the end of World War II, the few remaining monarchs found themselves in purely ceremonial offices. All of the kings pictured were related to King Edward VII by blood or by marriage or by both. While the UK still has its Monarch, the outbreak of World War I in 1914 brought a break for the Royal Family from its German heritage. They changed their name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor. The horses which pulled the funeral hearse, a gift to Edward VII from his nephew, Kaiser Wilhelm II, were destroyed on account of their Germanic bloodlines. Being king is not what it once was.
  7. OK. Who are these people? The best response will be the one which identifies each person and answers these additional questions. Where was the picture taken? When was it taken? Why were they gathered together? Good luck.
  8. Amazing!
  9. Stuart Sutcliffe was the Beatles' original bassist. I figured it out with a guess that the hairstyle was possibly one that the Fab Four might have worn. Searching Wikipedia for "Beatles" located a page which mentioned "Stu Sutcliffe" as a close friend of John Lennon. A further search for "Stuart Sutcliffe" yielded a number of web pages about him, including one which contained the following photo of one of his artistic endeavors: The piece is titled Homage to Elvis. See: http://www.stuartsutcliffe.org I will post another challenge shortly.
  10. Revenge is a good show, although I had not considered it to be a soap opera. Do you really think Jack is a wimp? How strong is anyone who has been shot in the stomach? I'm not sure he will find out the truth about "Amanda" until Emily tells him; how likely is it that Amanda's body will be recovered? As for Emily, she is already ruthless and cold-hearted, but she is the heroine.
  11. OK, Zombie. I think we have suffered long enough. I know who it is, but had to do a lot of research to figure it out so I won't reveal what I know. Not many GA members are going to recognize the picture of someone who died more than fifty years ago. He was not the most famous of his lot. I'm ready with another historic picture.

    Oh my! An update

You are definitely not to blame, Andy. Keep up the good work; it will pay off one day.
  13. Bummer... <p style="text-align:center;"><span rel='lightbox'><img class='bbc_img' src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5e/Microsoft-Staff-1978.jpg" alt="Microsoft-Staff-1978.jpg"></span></p> I shall be more selective in the future.
  14. Andy is correct. The guy at the left front is a real giveaway. Who knew then that he would one day be the world's richest person? The picture is of the entire Microsoft staff on December 7, 1978. Does anyone have additional comments?
  15. Nope, more civilized than that...maybe.
  16. The purpose of this thread is to present a photograph of historical significance and invite members to guess who or what is shown in the photo and comment on the historical significance. Ready? Here's the first one...

  19. We were dressed and ready to go out for the New Year's Eve Party. We turned on a night light, turned the answering machine on, covered our pet parakeet and put the cat in the backyard. We phoned the local cab company and requested a taxi. The taxi arrived and we opened the front door to leave the house. The cat that we put out in the yard, scoots back into the house. We didn't want the cat shut in the house because she always tries to eat the bird. My wife goes out to the taxi, while I went inside to get the cat. The cat runs upstairs, with me in hot pursuit. Waiting in the cab, my wife doesn't want the driver to know that the house will be empty for the night. So, she explains to the driver that I will be out soon, "He's just going upstairs to say goodbye to my mother." A few minutes later, I get into the cab. "Sorry I took so long," I said, as we drove away. "She was hiding under the bed. I had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out! She tried to take off, so I grabbed her by the neck. Then, I had to wrap her in a blanket to keep her from scratching me. But it worked! I hauled her by the neck downstairs and threw her out into the back yard!" The cab driver hit a parked car.

  22. Matt, you should have a poll with this thread. Some very interesting patterns might be revealed. It appears to me the majority of yes or no responses here are in the negative. Beyond that, the explanations given indicate that gays have grown to be satisfied with their orientation while bisexuals are having too much fun to change. Am I drawing a valid conclusion? Did everyone else already know that?
