  1. Eric is drifting, or wandering, if you like. He’s running out of food and money, like so many homeless teens. Fortunately, it’s summer, so Eric can stay warm easily.

    Church

While it sounds odd, Stephan / Eric has had some luck. He’s safe enough, out of the weather, and fed. For once, his rest is easier, and perhaps that was the source of his dream. You are kind to comment, and I’m grateful you have read the journal.

    Walk Away

Stephan has had more bad luck concentrated on him than some whole cities, it seems. Yet he remains free, and able to limp away from the disasters that have befallen him. Thank you for reading, and for your comments. I am very grateful.

    Catastrophe

Injustice rained down like a monsoon on poor Stephan. It hurt to write, and yet it is the same sorrow so many kids share. Thank you for reading.

    Noticed

Yes, it is a truly horrible household. Stefan’s father is one of those pathologically abusive people who cannot seem to love.

    A Journal

Thank you so very much for taking time to engage with this story. Stefan’s story is not an easy one, but I hope you will find it worthwhile in the end. I appreciate your thoughts and comments.

Ray thought he could play a waiting game to get free and out into the world. Instead, he found his worst nightmare realized. You’re right in that maximum security will not be good to him. Ray will live in fear as long as he lives. Thanks for reading this and for your thoughts.

Yes, and quite completely, too. Thank you!
  9. molly, how nice of you to read and remark on these. I am delighted some of them connected with you.
  10. Thank you, molly. I’m grateful you read these and that they prompted you to respond. April 3 was especially haunting to me.

  12. Pre-race excitement mixed with undefinable chemistry - oh, boy. Hope all the bikes are in good order, so that all that chemistry didn’t distract anyone.
  13. Ember just got thwacked by fate. Hiring his worst nightmare; learning he has a namesake; discovering that worst nightmare had a crush on him....and all in one chapter, all in one dinner sitting. He’s going to need more than beer.

Thank you, Def, both for reading this, and for your response. Ray is definitely the one responding to fear, now. Andy was fortunate to be able to send him to jail, and for a lifetime. Now Andy can confront his future, not his past.

I miss them, too. This scene in which Andy faces Ray Ericsson down is one which I could not work plausibly into the original story. It has nagged at my brain for a long time. Ray indeed knows that child rapists do not often fare well in the penitentiary. Thank you for your comments, and for reading this slice of Andy and Zander's ever after.

You're absolutely right - not every victim gets closure as Andy does. I wish it were otherwise. You are really, really kind to me about writing the lawyers. I labored over them, and I am happy their interplay worked out. Many thanks for reading this!

I like big city lawyers just fine - just not this particular one, perhaps. Ironically, it was this character who took such a long time to form in my brain. J. Preston Howard's point of view made the whole narrative gel for me, so I could write this scene - which has been nagging at my brain ever since I finished writing the original story. Thank you so much for reading this slice of Andy and Zander's ever after.

I am glad you could see Andy and Zander clearly in this point of view. As I said elsewhere, determining a point of view for this brief scene is what held up my thinking for a very , very long time. Once J. Preston Howard came to mind, I could write. Funny how that works. Many, many thanks for reading this, and for your comments.

Thank you so much for reading this brief snippet of Andy and Zander's lives. This scene has been nagging at me for months - but getting the right point of view for an observer had me puzzled for a long time. It is funny about what details one remembers from a story which has captivated one's attention. Heidi Graber was such a minor character, I am not surprised she didn't register at first. I am glad you enjoyed seeing Ray Ericsson get justice. As @Mikiesboy points out, not every victim is so fortunate as Andy to see it. Thanks again for reading, and for your comments.

Ray's secret is unlikely to stay secure forever. But the plea deal was his best chance of survival. He probably knows this. J. Preston Howard really did get ambushed, but he seemed to deserve it, and it set the one scene that has nagged my brain for a very long time - in which Andy gets to stare down his Uncle Ray, and send him back to prison for good. Andy faced down Ray, and can rest in some security now. And perhaps the big city lawyer will learn a little redeeming humility - but that's another story. Thank you so much for reading this small slice of ever after.

Thank you so much! It was immensely gratifying to finally get this scene out of my head and down on paper.

Thank you very much for returning to Andy and Zander's world, if only for a few moments. This was a scene which has nagged at me for a very long time, yet I hoped to approach it differently than in the original story. It took a very long time to settle on an appropriate observer and point of view. The real moment that was seared in my brain was the moment Ray realizes that Andy is alive, strong and unafraid. And that galvanizes Ray into taking a deal that gives him his only real chance of survival. There is no mention in the original story of what happens to Ray in prison, but secrets such as his cannot stay secure forever. And I am glad you liked the parting shot - Williams certainly paid Howard back very neatly. Thank you again!

Thank you, jp for reading this, and for your comment. This one moment - when Ray realizes Andy is alive and strong and unafraid - has been haunting me since I finished writing the original story. It is this moment, more than any other follow-on tableau, that kept poking at my brain like a splinter under the skin. Even though we see very little of Andy or Zander directly, I felt compelled to write this Observation. Thanks again.
