The art teacher is the kind of humane individual every kid should encounter. Not merely flexible and understanding, but essentially kind, as well as demanding. But you said ...every time...your read this..does this mean you read it more than once? -
So incredibly sad and colored in ochre and blood. Not pretty, though hopelessly romantic in its way. You write this well, and the conclusion is really inescapable. Poor Tristan, his will to joy and goodness turned down at every moment. Why must this be so? I truly hope this story is not an allegory for our own lives. Well written and memorable, tim.

It is hard to know what TP makes of Luis. You are right that there is much for him to relearn. Your comment that Wally may have trouble seeing himself in Luis or the Mate is quite telling. I am glad you think this good; TP is making a slow sea change, quite literally!

Not sure I would trust Wally, either. But in this environment, he is an unknown. Dr. Boudreau treats him with patience and some kindness, which must have been unexpected. But now the expectations are greater. He will have to perform in many areas, and cover for his own lack of preparation. Thanks for your perceptive comments.

TP just accepts the tag from Cookie; there appears to be a lot of abject apathy in TP still. Joshua may be far too intensely academic to connect with Wally/TP. Many thanks for reading thus dar into the story.

Cookie's personality seems to be one that draws others into its orbit. Cookie probably has reasons for choosing 'Wally,' but these remain a mystery. Perhaps it just sounds good to the order man's ear. Somebody may trust Wally, but you can hardly be blamed for not doing so yourself...many thanks!

Marc is a man who made the journey back to wholeness, or somewhere near it. He never wants to revisit the black places TP made him go, and he remembers that TP made him go. That he does not hate TP anymore is a testimony to Lee's love, and to the will to travel a different highway. Marc's story is so very different TP's, which is even now being written...many thanks got taking up the story!

Thank you Gary, for this really supportive review. You seem to recognize that a change in the human heart is a slow, incremental affair. Like life at sea, it is often a little tedious, and often the differences are subtle, like changes in light at different latitudes. You have noticed perfectly how Wally/ TP may be growing a little. Well, Wally lost his family wealth and criminal activity eventually blew up in his face, as you observe. What is also striking is that TP never really recognized anyone as being out of bounds before. Is Luis really out of bounds, or is Wally just too tired to make a move? But you are right in that this chapter opens further the education in life Wally is getting. Many thanks for your review, which I appreciate immensely.

"So, how do you like navigation after three days, Wally?" This from the First Mate, Calvin Scheck. The Mate had been teaching him basic principles of navigation. Unlike his work with the Engineer, this had been largely a mental exercise. In fact, it hadn't been much exercise at all. Scheck didn't appear to realize his intern had more than half a brain, so much the time they spent together was wasted on busywork. Or so it seemed. Paperwork, mindless articles to read in his nonexistent free time

So much to ponder, analyze, consider...fight. Is it the self one fights, or fate? What is lost in the analysis and the action? You corral so many thoughts into this poem, but that only cements the impression of thought piling up upon thought until the brain is a disorderly desk top of ideas waiting for attention. This is a well done piece, which will require several visits. Thanks.

TP is thinking now, and actually realizing what his earlier life meant. It cannot help but make him feel dirty. I think Prof Boudreau is being partly helpful and partly finding a way to get someone else (like the Captain) to work with TP. Clearly it would be a huge burden for her to take him on as a student in her own. The alternative to throwing TP overboard might be clapping TP in irons and feeding him on thin gruel...thanks for your excellent observations and thoughts...and for reading the story, of course!

Found out, sort of...Professor Boudreau can't exactly have him thrown in irons and fed on thin gruel...as she possibly sees it, she's fobbing him off on a less- popular study area as a way to effectively absolve herself of responsibility. He can be the Captain's problem now. Thanks for reading!
