Goodness, I thought there was going to be a bar brawl for a second. But you did a really wonderful thing with the Apprentice crossover. Loved to see that. And poor Fred (let alone the poor girl). Maybe someday he'll figure out who he really is...

Oh, this is sooooo good! I want to wrap this up as a present to all those who I hold dear, I want to keep it by my bedside for days when I feel crummy. It is awesome, Gary. You really caught it perfectly this time!

You are right in that TP feels a pull not toward his old life, but toward something new. Selling the car may be part of that. Marc would clearly remind him just how much he has to atone for, and I imagine a car won't cover it, extravagant and significant though the gesture may be. What TP can do right now is to begin the process of changing, and this will surely help. And you are very much right in that this is a kind of farewell. But who knows where he is going? Marc and Lee certainly live the spirit of Christmas. Perhaps Lee kissed the Scrooge right out of his lover. It would appear so. TP got to observe Christmas, almost like that old Dickensian character, and only at the end did he get to participate. No chains or ghosts required, though TP may have plenty of ghosts and skeletons of his own to reckon with. Thanks so much for your generous words, which warmed my heart on a cold day!

I am very glad this chapter was believable to you. Our predator certainly seems to have been affected by his encounter with mercy and kindness. As you suggest, the spite he felt toward his parents somehow seems less important now. But his extravagant attempt at atonement will only let him consider starting over, and who knows if he can carry through with it? TP's thoughts have undergone a real change, haven't they? Marc and Lee have had a profound effect on him, but so have the events leading up to the moment he arrived on their doorstep. In any case, he isn't locked in his own head all the time anymore. TP wanting to try to atone in some undefined way is perhaps understandable, even commendable. But rarely do such extravagant attempts to cover one's sins actually manage to do the trick. Many thanks for your insights and comments.

TP has come to a very low point. As Carlos observes, it is Marc and Lee who respond so much in the spirit of Christmas; TP doesn't deserve mercy or kindness, and he is shown both. His heart is softening, but is he really ready for actual change? That remains very much to be seen. Of course, there is more to this story, just as life goes on after Christmas. And no,I'm not saying anything about his name, either . Thanks for reading, and for your encouragement!

In many ways, Lee and Marc responded to TP exactly in harmony with the season. It is they who have done the most difficult thing, and included TP in their keeping Christmas. Funny how I never really thought of this as a Christmas story, though. I thank you for your encouragement and commentary - and I hope you are enjoying this!

I am so glad you liked this part; it wasn't in my original thinking, but the idea was so insistent (and far better than what I thought at first). And you are right - TP physically turning away from the old stomping grounds is immensely telling. Many thanks for your encouragement and support!

TP (thank you for this excellent abbreviation, my friend!) may lose some of his identity with his car, too; but that may not be an altogether bad thing. You speak of reinvention, and that remains for TP to begin. But I hope yours has gone well. Peace. P

Drought dubbed him TP, and it sticks...ahem...and you are absolutely right in that TP and Marc will not make a particularly happy pair right now. I wonder what the other shoppers at the grocery store will make of them. But if Lee is being his truly good self, then Marc is, as you say, making an effort. TP probably appreciates it, although Marc's ferocity may make that difficult. Many thanks for your remarks and comments, and most of all, for continuing to read this story.

Marc and TP may manage to bear with each other, if only for the sake of Lee, who wants to do good. But you are surely right that Marc will do anything to protect Lee. TP (it kind of grows on one, doesn't it?) is probably just happy to have had a warm bed in an actual house. I am glad you continue to read this story, and I thank you for your perceptive comments...

He settled warily into his role as a tolerated houseguest. Marc and Lee allowed him to stay until something else could be arranged. They were kind enough not throw him out onto the street, even after what he'd done. But Marc never, ever allowed him to stay in the house alone with Lee for any length of time. Never. He understood that, and it hurt. In the run-up to Christmas, he'd been acutely aware of how he couldn't really share in Marc and Lee's lives, and how much Marc and Lee shut him out

I have been slow to wake, to rise and to read today. This was a treat to find! You handled this prompt with finesse, and I love the way you resolved the tensions that underlay Sam's relationship with Randy (way better than Randolf ) And while it is easy to consider the temptation of running away back to Jim, you took a harder, route, but the better one. But I have to admit, Akasha would try my patience terribly... Great story! -

TP (the predator..thank you, drought) can see more clearly than he has been able to in years. Perhaps his perspective is better, and he can see beyond himself and his immediate desires. What does he do with this newer broader vision? You are very, very kind and generous in your comments; I am so very grateful. Thanks especially for hanging in there and reading this tale.

Very well said. I think Lee sees mercy as something that may be a little more detached than forgiveness; maybe it is, as you suggest, an action you can take or something you can do or give. It doesn't necessarily go with forgiveness, which I agree, is something different. Marc may be merciful for Lee's sake, but can he forgive? Can TP accept that? Great thoughts and I appreciate them. Lee threw the lifeline, Marc grudgingly paid out the rope. TP (thanks, drought) has had the good sense to hang on, but as Mayday points out, he is still drifting. Thanks for your encouragement, and for reading!

I don't think the predator (TP, thanks to drought) will ever be fully free of the consequences of his actions. But you are right in that TP now begins to see beyond the borders of himself; his perspective is a little but higher, so he can see farther. Your metaphor of drift is apt, and I think it very wise indeed. And I agree with your perception that it is not light, but something brighter that we see. For TP, that in itself represents a great sea change. Thank you for your acuity, and for your encouragement, and for your kind support. Most of all, thank you for reading!
