    Poor Andy is in shock right now. He's lost so much. He's reeling and feeling terrible about himself. Whatever relationship he had with Zander, Kaz and Terry, it's going to be different. From Andy's viewpoint, he may experience shame and anger - not a good recipe for friendship. The questions will have to wait, I think. Thank you so much for reading and for leaving your comments.     Well, they were expecting he might show, at any rate. Poor Andy just has no clue about this kind of school social etiquette. What's good is that Terry and Kaz and Zander are all pretty kind to him that way. I enjoyed writing this chapter, even though it didn't seem like too much was going on.     All those elves, toiling away! I can hear the busy-ness and see them hammering away. Though nowadays, they're probably pretty good at injection molding machines and 3-D CAD design, too. Great Carol!

    I'll just second SD's remarks - a great chapter, and with Alex in the picture, poor old Robbie's about to get into a seriously confusing whirl. But if Alex is all straight-seeming, maybe they both have the same motivation to keep their desires hidden. Good luck with that!

    From his friends' perspective, the man they saw was Andy's dad. A loud, oafish drunk, but still his father. I doubt any of them have been confronted with such a situation, and were paralyzed both by its novelty and the understanding that this is Andy's only kin. Maybe Andy will be mad about it sometime, but right now he's probably getting over the shock of losing so much of what he had. and his friends know something isn't right, but what will they do? Like so many of us, they may just wait and see what develops. Many thanks for your review and for reading thus far!

    Green Hat had poor Andy's windpipe in a lock, so the chance to tell everyone the real story passed. The real problem now becomes what to do now that the real shock has passed. Andy must feel intense shame at what happened, and probably suspects that nobody will want anything to do with him. No more Kaz and Terry; no more Zander. But winter is closing in, so running may be a very bad option, too. Thanks for reading this painful episode, and for your review!

    Andy has lost so much as a result of this attack, that it's hard to count the cost. Kaz and Terry and Zander probably have no idea what to do or how to react. They may be worried, but maybe also feel lucky not to have had to deal with Andy's drunken father. Ironically, I had meant to post this later in the he week, but then realized I'd be too busy. The next chapter will have to wait a few days.

    Andy has no desire to explain anything to anyone right now, I think. Roger is lucky to be alive, though he may not realize it. Who knows? At least Andy still has his summer money stashed away, but he lost everything he's earned that day. Thanks for the review. Time for everyone to lick his/her wounds...

    What is there to do? Andy has been robbed not so much of his work money as of his confidence, his self worth, and (as he sees it) his friendships. So much for Kaz and Terry; so much for Zander. At the very best, he's covered in shame again, and quite possibly (if Terry talks as she does) to the advertisement of the whole school. But running means dealing with the cold, and that's getting to be all to real a problem. Not sure he can hang out in school without being noticed by someone if he doesn't go to classes.     November 21 It was all too good to last. Knew it would happen sometime. Feel shaky and shitty, and scared. Don't want to think about it. (***) A little better now, if that means I can sit up, think straight, and stop shaking. I’ve been waiting for the whole, great, wonderful adventure to collapse in a heap of dust, and that’s exactly what happened this weekend. The worst thing is that it wasn’t anything I did. Well, nothing that I did since getting to Blackburn. Everything was going great

    Sad, so sad. I ache hold the speaker, to interrupt the voice of the 'alter,' the nasty, sarcastic voice that tears away at the self and all that is good and whole. You make me want to shout that voice down, to send it in full retreat. But shouting rarely does that. Sometimes it flees at a smile, or a good word, or at an encouraging squeeze. God, do I ever know about that. You write about what I know can hurt. Thanks for this: it is so accurately and compellingly expressive.

    Andy beginning to realize he can have something very, very good. Friends. Almost enough to eat. The beginnings of a place in the world. He's gained so much, at least as much as he had with Eustace on the farm. As you say, belief and trust will be the things that bring him out of the library. That's going to take time.     Andy's pulled between the need to hide, and the need to be open with his new friends. His conditioned caution and wariness will probably lead him to make decisions about what absolutely must stay hidden, and what can be revealed. This chapter gave us a good idea of how that might play out someday. The friendship with Kaz can hardly be anything but positive.     Andy has deflected nearly all of these kinds of questions with a shrug, or if that won't do, something vague and general. This is the first time he's had to be specific - and this means admitting his poverty, if nothing else. His report card appears to have gone astray, but that's one of the many unanswered questions, as you observe. Thank you so very much for reading and for staying with the story so far.
