    August Escape

That it was inevitable doesn't make it less sad. I wonder what Eustace felt when Eric didn't show up for work? Or Ambrose, for that matter? Kind of a pity our narrator isn't omniscient this once...Thanks so much for your review, and for reading!

    August Escape

Don't we all wish that the lottery had those prizes? This was a hard chapter to write, because I really loved so much of what was happening to Eric at the Whitley farm. But Ambrose wasn't about to stop asking those pesky questions...thank you so much for reading and reviewing.

    August Escape

With Ambrose questioning, questioning, the need to flee became inevitable. It was sad to have to write it, anyway. Ambrose isn't a bad guy, but he's doing what comes naturally to him - asking questions, and getting at the truth. Unfortunately, the truth is way too risky for Eric. Eustace wasn't happy about giving in, we could tell; he surely hoped Eric would prove clean as a whistle. And if not for his accursed dead father, that's exactly what would have happened...a great pity that the dead father still screws Eric over, even from the grave.

    August Escape

August 10 Toby Harris ran into me yesterday. Just about literally. Last evening after work, I was walking down the river road into East Akron for a few supplies, when a pickup truck barreled past me on the narrow road, then braked hard to a stop. Its taillights glowed in the dust it had kicked up. Instantly, I got ready to bolt, but there wasn’t much cover, and anyhow, I’d been spotted. I didn’t recognize the truck at first, but I sure knew the big, black haired boy who emerged from the dri
  5. No way. First again? Twoey and David's connection seems to be strengthening. And the half dollar? Well, if that doesn't freak David out, what will? David's stomach may not be able to handle the rich food Ginny made. Roast with béchamel sauce? If David doesn't start eating more, she's going to have leftovers for a couple of weeks. Am wary of the last sentence - Twoey doesn't know what the pain in his head means? He's in for a huge shock; that, or there are more injuries the surgeons couldn't fix or didn't see. Either way, Twoey is in for a world of hurt. Great chapter. Please post more soon! (insert puppy dog sad-face here).

    Chapter 7

Careful journey is right. If there are others out there on the roads, there is no guarantee they're going to be friendly!

    Alone 8

I weep for you. I weep for all the times you felt alone and used up. I weep for the cold you felt, the misery you endured, and the hurt you experienced. I cannot undo any of that. But I rejoice that you have come through it to another side. A brighter side, as you say. Thank you for sharing this with all of us.
  8. I shiver at this. Tristan about to be killed, and Micah with him. Oh, the poor world.
  9. Will not get into an emoticon competition. Thanks for a chapter that helps us see kindness, tenderness and compassion. These are all wonderful things, and in short supply some days. It is wonderful to read in this story.

    Alone 7

Like SD's metaphor: Matt has constructed his own prison - unlike a lot of kids, he has the option to find Dan and Andrew, tell them what happened at Christmas and let them be parents - or at least, uncles - for him. Matt has the keys to his own cell, but not the strength or the ability to turn it in the lock. This is the tragedy. I see some hope in Matt's reconnection with Chad, but does Matt have the time to rebuild anything at all with him?

    Alone 6

Dear God. Just when something goes right, just when the walls start to wobble a bit, one of Dan and Andrew's friends rapes Matt? Back to the streets and back to despair? I would be very surprised if Matt didn't try to find a way to end it all very quickly after this.

    Alone 5

Like some of the earlier chapters, this makes me ache and cry. But the worst of it is, while this story may be fictional (I sure hope it is), it's also the story of so many homeless kids. And unlike Matt, they don't have a kind author writing their lives for them. If you and I really want to do something besides read this excellent story, we'll support the teen shelters for kids that exist in every city for kids like Matt.

    Chapter 6

This was a lovely chapter in this dystopia kind of story. Shortwave? So few people have even heard of shortwave radio anymore. Good luck in finding a receiver; even better luck finding a Radio Shack! Wonder how hard locating other people will turn out to be? Anyhow, it's so good to see Joel and Craig becoming friends. Thanks, and looking for more...
  14. Thank you for your review! Winter will arrive sooner or late, but right now, Eric is enjoying summer, or as much of it as he can manage under the circumstances. He's beginning to live. Perhaps worry is in his nature. Our lifeguard friend is still going to have to bide his time before he appears in our sights again.
  15. Defiance, I am so glad you reviewed. The idea of an exit plan is simultaneously one of the best ideas and worst ideas for Eric. You're absolutely right, he needs one. But for the past four weeks+ he's actually begun to live, if only a little. Not sure he could actually formulate a catastrophe strategy even if he recognized the need. That he's thinking about winter shows some foresight, but even that is kind of wondery - dreamy...
  16. Eric has a lot to worry about; the end of summer may just sneak up on him. It is high summer, and the work just keeps coming. Eustace clearly thinks Eric is a good kid, and is mentoring him kindly. This has probably been the best month or so of his life - or at least of the past decade of it.

    A Journal

Thank you for beginning this story. I hope you continue to enjoy what you read, though it is sometimes hard going. Stefan's father is clearly a tyrant and a brute. Poor Stefan hasn't a chance against him.
  18. Yeah, it is confusing, I will admit, but there's a reason for it. Honest. And yes, Ambrose is being very persistent and subtle, isn't he? Summer won't last forever, you're absolutely right about that. Hay can be a great insulator, though.

    Yeudos

Big smiles. Love it, SD. Simple, elegant, and joyful.
  20. These are two different voices speaking. The lifeguard, in italics speaks to us first. Eric, who swims by night, second. I apologize for the confusion; the first voice speaks to us occasionally. Does that help?
  21. I think Alone Again is heartbreaking. The joy and anticipation in My Door completely dissipates. I love this pairing. Thank you.
  22. Eric has a lot to learn about the mechanics of living a 'normal' life, doesn't he? Ambrose's nature appears to be associated with ferreting out answers to life's persistent questions. And the midnight swim? Yeah, I liked that a lot, too.

    Alone 4

So now I'm angry, upset and yearning for Matt to figure out something so that he doesn't have to live by his ass or his mouth. Are Dan and Andrew really that bad by comparison? What a terrible, terrible thing to happen to Matt.
  24. Late July means swim camp. Every year, it’s held at a state university campus for a week. Every year for three years, my parents have sent me. This summer wasn’t any different. It was a break from lifeguarding, and a chance to get coaching from of the best people in the state. Also a chance to size up the competition for next winter. Also a chance to look at hot boys. Whatever had stayed mostly quiet for almost two months was going to get woken up again. The ‘rising Juniors and Seniors’ (th

    Chapter 3

Tall thunderheads loom in the distance. Who is the mysterious and intimidating Pamchenko? Who is he to Shane? And then Jason will also reap the whirlwind called Denise. Jason appears to be holding firm in wanting to care for Shane, but can that hold? Now waiting for more!
