There is a danger inviting an unknown guest to your heart's abode. You risk inspection, and guarded spaces, once closed, open to his gaze, yield up their secrets. Dusty, long forgotten toys, embarrassed by day, write love's histories. One welcomed stranger can spill a lifetime of pain across a wide floor. No frenzied gathering will ever return it.

Thank you for your kind words. Andy is very wary, and likely to guard his secrets. Though Andy hasn't thought it all through, he's hot to know that everything could go badly wrong if he slips up at all. The phone issue may turn out to be trouble. The assistant principal was remiss in that he really ought to have taken Andy to the police station for emergency shelter; a place Andy resolutely would have refused to enter. You were really nice to write what you said. And yes, if it was addictive for you to read, think of the poor author who hated to type the final period. It was very hard to put aside, and still is for me. Andy is still a very cautious, very wary kid, here. Plenty can happen, and plenty can still go very, very, badly for him, and he knows it. But for now, there's a warm bed and a family that has taken him in as a houseguest. That's good enough to sleep on. Next chapter is a big double-length chapter, so you will have to pace yourself somehow! -

Thank you for this review, Def. Andy is still a very wary boy inside, but maybe this experience will get him to trust some more. We just don't know what happened with Andy's father; that was more than could be fit into the text. The phone call could be problematical, but only if Zander's dad thinks he needs to call. This could happen, and then the unraveling could begin - but only if...for now, Andy sleeps in an actual bed in the same house as Zander. If he weren't so tired, the thought would keep him awake all night. Many thanks again! -

What an interesting way to wake up. Poor Andy is completely disoriented for a moment, and the discombobulation continued for the rest of the day. Poor kid didn't know what hit him. Zander is probably a bit of a wreck himself. Happy, but a wreck, I expect. The next chapter is a big, double-size chapter, so make it last the whole weekend. Well, I'm sorry for being so transparent, , but I'm happy you got most of your wishes. All of the issues you raise exist. The biggest problem may be the tug-of-war you mention. This is probably a hugely disorienting and jarring episode in Andy's already adventurous life. Not that it's a bad one, though. And, as you point out, this could have been particularly deadly, and nearly was. Luckily, no hospitalization was necessary. Thank you so much for your review and for reading! -
I feel very badly for Ethan. On the other hand, I'd never even have had the courage to ask, but it must have hurt to have gotten shot down so definitively. And contrary to appearances, gay men are not so thick on the ground in any part of Vermont that Ethan can just go look for another. For that matter, neither can Galen. Oh dear. Great chapter.

I liked this. You convey the greying of the spirit as well as of the season, and its inevitability too. The insistent meter and rhythm suggest your pace. But be not too melancholy, for with the advancing season comes also the rebirth of love and kindness. I thank you for the beauty of your words, and the beauty of the images you evoke.

Thank you so much for your kind and lengthy review. Stefan has a long way to go. His father is a brute, and no mistake. The man has done his best to damage his son mentally and physically. Your comment on how sad it is that Stefan believes he deserves this is so often true of kids who are abused. His efforts to free himself are pretty heroic, I a glad you have stayed with the story so far!

Colin is a real creep, but we don't get to know him long enough to tell him so. Thank goodness. Poor Eric gets hurt again, though, and that has to lay up another layer of mistrust and wariness. But it was so much fun being read to, and to do the reading, too. Someone tugging at the better part of his nature. Thank you for reading to this point!

So Galen decided to be brave and tell Josh 'no.' Wise, but it must have hurt so very badly. A new cat! Purrrrr. And then this old friend Jody...hmmm. What weather that will bring over the ridge....

Roger appears to be selfish, or at least self-absorbed. He seems to have very little ability to give Josh what he needs. He's hardly much of a lover, more like a taker. At least in my opinion. Still, if Josh seems committed to that relationship, however, one-sided it is, he ought not to encourage Galen. Everyone will wind up hurt.

So there appears to be a Roger. Galen can't help wanting Josh, but I think his conflict about cheating - even on an asshole - would be enough to keep him out of Josh's way. Still, what makes it hard is that the two men are clearly attracted to one another, can't help circling. Galen should make a decision about whether to make an honest play for Josh or not. But maybe Josh couldn't see that even if he wanted to.

Of all the rotten luck. He has a boyfriend. Galen will have to desire someone else. Josh ought to have let him know sooner - put him off more gracefully. As it is, Galen may never bring himself to feel that kind of connection again. This is both hot and sad.

So this is late. So I'm dead last in this derby. Too bad. I love this first chapter. I know Vermont, and am wondering where Galen is. But how good it is to have a solid friend, and good contact when you need one. Family. Liam must have been a godsend. Thank you for this chapter, and sorry I've been slow.
