Stefan cannot trust this man Ozzie. He has little strength for trust. The first person he relies on is himself. The longer he manages to stay free, the stronger that reliance and self-trust becomes.

Stefan has managed to get out of a horrible situation, but cannot find a way to land on his feet. All he can think of to do is keep moving. His experiences and ill fortune must color his observations. I also imagined an alternate plotline in which he revealed himself to the party goers at the lake. I couldn't see it going anywhere good, however, and it remained a stillborn idea. Thanks again for reading.

Houghton seems like a place Stefan might stay in for a bit. His luck, such as it is, held so far.

Stefan is running but he was under cover and was able to rest for a day. He may not really know what to do with his good dream; he has so few. Thanks again for reading.

For once, a tiny bit of luck. Stefan got a meal, a bit of praise, and a new name. The clouds are still gathered and grey over his head, but at least he is not getting pelted with a storm of ill fortune.

Stefan feels he has no alternative but to run. The real question is where to go? He knows very little of the town he lives in, and nothing beyond that. Thanks for hanging on with him.

He needs all those things, plus a person who will actually see him and his injuries. His track record for such luck isn't good.

What's so hard is that, while Stefan's story is fiction, there are news reports of kids who really do undergo abuse like this. Like him, they feel entirely alone in their misery. His journal is his only means of escape. I'm grateful you've hung on so far through Stefan's darkness.

Stefan’s father harbors such sustained hatred toward his son. Across this country, there are too many such angry men. Thanks for reading.

Poor Stefan is a kid who has never gotten a break. His existence is day to day, hoping that the dawn won’t bring as much hurt as the last one. Uncle Ray is certainly a scary man, someone to fear.

Can I say that Heinrich Jr is much hotter than Sr? But this whole chapter flows with adrenaline. I really enjoyed the flight scenes (intruders!) and the variety of aircraft you described. And then the flight to Florida, for reasons I want to know more and more about. Great chapter! -
I’m glad you made the connection to the visual sense in “listen to the perfect.” That’s exactly how Gus seems to see Rick. Maybe Rick can learn to believe, too. Your comments are kind and encouraging. I’m very grateful.

Gus is already giving Rick courage to do many things; stand up to ICE agents and face down Rita at the Strawberry Social, and tell Heinrich ’no’ to his attempts at matchmaking. At least Caroline Lee’s chickens didn’t interrupt Rick and Gus. After a nice long shower, they might decide to do something about the birds. They’ll wait. You are very kind to offer such encouraging words. You chose two of my favorite bits to include in your quote, which made me grin. If the dialogue in this chapter is good, it's only because I tried to pay attention to other excellent writers on GA. They provided the very kind of instruction you speak of, and they can smile that you think the student did relatively well here. I agree that dialogue can be hard to write sometimes. From time to time, I have had to rip out whole sections and try again, because it just sounded forced or lifeless to my ear. I have no doubt that this is true for other writers, too.
