I'm sure that Rick would be the first to cheer if the Yankees collapse in the eighth. Gus is unlikely to sulk in that event, but I can bet the two men would have plenty of remarks to trade in any case. Despite what's happened, Gus and Rick are still together. You're good to observe that despite his undeniable kindness, any kind of relationship with Rick may prove to have its challenges. Rick feels awful about what happened, and he's horrified that he put Gus in jeopardy. He has made Gus his overriding priority, so perhaps Gus will find a way to make Rick understand he's forgiven. Many thanks for reading and for your insights.

Every time something goes awry, Rick is quick to blame himself and fear the worst. Yet it seems that these hurdles only serve to give Gus and Rick more to talk about, more to experience with each other. You are right that these men compliment each other. Neither seems willing to unhook and let the other swim free. Thank you very much for your thoughts and comments.

Perhaps it's the game and its internal tension which distracts us from the darker question of Gus' ability to make music. I can imagine you at that game, too. Many, many thanks!

Rick is falling for Gus. What differentiates the pianist from other infatuations may be their ability to connect and talk so easily together. Thanks for reading!

Funny how engrossing a baseball game can become, isn't it? I'm glad the chapter ending felt a little bit like a cliffhanger. Poor Rick feels horrible about the dunking Gus took; the guilt weighs heavily on him. Even if Gus is unhurt, Rick is likely to feel the enormity of what might have happened pressing in on him. Unlike the quiet of the lake and its gentle rhythms, the ride and wait engender more conversation and mutual discovery, as you suggest. Thanks very much for reading, and for your comments!

Cold. Rick came to the surface and spluttered. Butternut Lake was cold. The bright sun still shone, fluffy clouds punctuated the brilliant azure sky overhead; but now the canoe floated somewhere, overturned. In the meantime, chilly water streamed off his head and face in the center of the lake. Gus! Where is Gus? How could I have let this happen? A gurgle and splash sounded close to his right. He turned in time to see the other man thrash and inhale a mouthful of lake water.

Who will kill whom first? Fergus killing Jada and Sawyer, or Maddie killing Jimmy for endangering her children? Or maybe Maddie gets to put Fergus down? Or maybe we all get lucky and Fergus gets hit by a train.

Destination for spring break!

Gus still has that cast on, you’re right. And it won’t make it easy for him in the water. You may also remember that Gus isn’t much of a swimmer, either.

Chapter 3: Valentine's Day
Parker Owens commented on NFields1608's story chapter in Chapter 3: Valentine's Day
Thanks for sharing this poem to a grand occasion. -
Lee is lucky to still be alive. Eddie just let him go, and his infected wound hasn’t killed him yet. Lee is tough, and he’s discovered work he likes. Harlan knew Greg was wrong, and I’d love to know how. Greg and Clay finding Lee eased my heart; I won’t need my medication tonight. However, my heart goes to Avery, who took his courage in both hands and told the truth. You told this well. Thanks.

Cadet Third Class • II
Parker Owens commented on Carlos Hazday's story chapter in Cadet Third Class • II
This is such a good chapter on lots of levels. What made me smile most was Ritch standing up to the traditions of hazing, which if allowed to grow and fester, eventually become deadly. That was well done. -
Get out your rod and reel; there’s a great deal to be said for spending a quiet morning on a sparkling lake, especially if someone as attractive as Gus wants to be there with you. Rick felt incredibly fortunate. But just at this moment, he’s feeling the shock of cold: Butternut Lake is spring fed. Thanks for joining Rick in the canoe, and for your kind comments.

Even Gus has imperfections; he’s a Yankees fan. But notice Rick forgives Gus even that. Such are the things we do for love. And Gus’ observation on the subtle music of the day around him and Rick must make him grow ever lovelier. Your comments were very kind and encouraging. I’m very happy the description of their morning on the lake resonated with you. Many thanks for reading and for your response.
-
Well they’re cold enough now. Kinda changes the whole day, doesn’t it?

This has been a delightful outing for both Gus and Rick. At least, it was until they tipped into the lake. Butternut Lake is very beautiful, and I’m glad you enjoyed the music of the world with Gus and Rick. However, they just discovered how cold it is! Thanks very much for your thoughts and for reading!

You and Gus can watch Yankees games while Rick grumbles. As for the swimming, the water’s cold! Thanks for reading!

Could it be Aditus?

I'm glad there were some memorable lines for you uttered by Rick and Gus in this chapter. Rick and Gus getting to know one another's world makes me smile every time I get to write about it. Thanks a million for reading and for jotting down your favorites.

No, not even Gus is perfect. Perhaps it's a good thing that Rick discovers that, so he won't idealize Gus so much, or put him on some kind of pedestal. Perhaps Gus can try the Gondolier role when his cast is off. Gosh, there's no telling what might have happened if Rick had remembered to bring the beer. On the other hand, he might have been a little flustered in getting out of the house. Rita definitely does not go fishing, at least not in the literal sense. That's a great mercy. Thank you very much for continuing to read, and for your thoughts.
-
First, they'll have to get to shore. It's cold and deep in Butternut Lake. But what a lovely thought. Thank you for reading!
-
Rick would agree that this vacation day would rank as the best ever. I'm glad the peace on the water came to you. Not sure that swimming was what Rick and Gus had in mind, however. Thanks very much for reading, and for your response.
-
Well they certainly made a splash, didn't they? Thanks for reading and for the delightful pun.

“You what?” Rick couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “Please tell me you’re making this up.” Gus smirked at him from the passenger seat of his old pickup truck, the trees along the highway whizzing past in the early morning light. “Sorry, Rick. It’s true. I hate to disappoint you.” “I can’t believe I bought you coffee and Danish. I even let you in my truck.” “You want to turn around?” The truck hit a rough spot in the pavement; conversation was briefly interrupted

Whew. Fergus sees the bloody consequences of his folly, but can’t recognize his own ineptitude. He literally has it rubbed in his face, but he’s too foolish to see. And now he wants to turn what’s left of his pack into a troop of zombie-walking automatons? Talk about grotesque: this is is one seriously pigheaded wolf.
