The outgoing Palm Springs Mayor Ron Oden, on the left, congratulates Mayor-elect, Steve Pougnet. Steve received over 70% of the votes cast in yesterday's election. Both men are openly gay. Another 'out' man, Rick Hutcheson, was elected to city council.

This tragic loss is a direct result of a drunk driver's reckless actions and Codey was the victim. Whatever support you can lend to groups like MADD might help lessen these acts of vehicular mayhem. Codey's short life was changed forever because of another's irresponsible stupidity. Jack

Cray's primary goals right now are to blend in at school and make a few new friends. Oh, and maybe find a "special" buddy. Joe, the boss, is first and foremost concerned about protecting his turf/business interests. He moved on the opportunity handed to him...get Vinny Jr outda there so the golden goose keeps...etc. With Mario, it's a combination of looking after his "nephew" and making a little power play. Hey, come on. My first 20 years were spent in Des Moines... ...and just returned from a high school reunion (held in Bonita Springs, Fl). I saw an unusual thing last night. The wildfire smoke is now drifting east and arrived in the Palm Springs area yesterday afternoon. Last night, the moon was a bright orange. The only thing missing was a silhouette of a witch on a broom. BTW, the Palm Springs population (44,000) is now approximately 42% GBLT. As a sidebar, we continually have earthquake activity. Things will get a little tense on occasion...down the road. Thanks, Jan, for pointing out the awkwardness of these two teens as they explored intimacy for the first time. That was my intention in the final scene of Ch. 8. Certain things just fall into place, however "basic". Mario is a complicated man, Connor. He seems able to separate his profession with personal emotions. But, as you have seen, he's very good at what he does. Other than the academic excellence of Green Valley High School, I don't know anything about the student's acceptance of gay students. In the story, I assume that most of the students with whom Cray comes in contact are able to deal with diversity. Jack

I was struck by the sincerely of the first letter from a concerned aunt, worried about her five-year old nephew. Here's a 3:30 p.m. PDT update: 513,000 residents evacuated in San Diego/LA area 600 square miles ablaze Over 2,000 homes destroyed 2 deaths 45 injured Because of the wind gusts up to 70 mph, the wildfires continue to leap around. Aircraft support is ineffective. Unfortunately, these conditions may continue for another 24 hours. Over 600 firefighters are involved.

This mayhem in the LA/San Diego area is mind boggling. As of 9:00 a.m. PDT time, over 600 homes have been destroyed and 300,000 people have been evacuated. If any bonifide GA members are in need of a temporary shelter in Palm Springs during this disaster, I have a guest room. Jack

There may be some speed bumps in future chapters...the story is just getting underway. However, Cray is resilient and has acquired an unusual support group. I'm on a mini-vacation right now and will post two chapters next week to make up for nothing this week. Jack
