Based on what she said at the funeral 'She looked at us, “Please take care of him. He’s a good boy.”', I can't see how it can be bad tidings. That line rather rules out the thought that she might be thinking of trying to get custody.

Thanks @Cane23 . Glad you enjoyed. CP definitely still occurs in Texas schools. It also definitely did occur in South African private schools and may still do. I don't think I was that specific about the time period for this story.

The ultimate test to show if your words really do have meaning or are simply hollow noises. Jem having already sacrificed his life to save Nico in the Marksman game it should not come as to much of a surprise he'd have the same instinct in a real life situation.
