Based on what she said at the funeral 'She looked at us, “Please take care of him. He’s a good boy.”', I can't see how it can be bad tidings. That line rather rules out the thought that she might be thinking of trying to get custody.

CP definitely still occurs in Texas schools. It also definitely did occur in South African private schools and may still do. I don't think I was that specific about the time period for this story.
