It was a relief to see the successful healing of the hybrid pups balanced by Asa’s managing not to over exert himself in the process. Once an alpha, always an alpha….Caleb may no longer bear the title but his leadership skills still showed in the suggestions he made regarding their future shopping trips and the respect Sebastian gives him as a peer….the only loose end for Caleb at this point is Vann, hopefully he reveals his relationship to him before any action on the He Bitch front. “Someone torched Corbin’s ranch. Everything went up in flames.” Everything and everyone???? 🥺 Corbin’s things can be replaced, Corbin cannot….hope he’s being comforted next chapter and not mourned. 🤞

Fear for the man he loved was ever present in his tasks, as Jubal tried to combat his shocky condition by staying busy at the farm….as if tending to those chores kept him closer to Lucas and perhaps, death further at bay. Jubal’s more pocket and property rich (minus two gold coins, lol) but it all means nothing while Lucas’ life hangs in the balance….should Lucas pass, Jubal’s material wealth will always be hollow comfort. I hope Jubal bears in mind should his love survive, he will need all his help as motivation to maintain his own physical well being. In reading this and other westerns, we always reference the fact that everyone did what one must to survive, it was truly a kill or be killed kind of life back then….it struck me with the rereading of this chapter that survivors of violence across the span of history bear the same scars-what we know as post traumatic stress disorder today was also experienced by the antecedents of time….while I’m sure it definitely worked to keep one more alert, it saddens me to think of the deeper impact that bore on a psyche stretched to the limit for the bare necessities….in this instance, Lucas’ survival will do much to assuage Jubal’s PTSD (which he probably already had due to the dragging) & Jubal’s presence in his life will do much to assuage Lucas’. 🤞 Will Lucas wake up? The risks Lucas faces make me glad to exist in the time of modern medicine; X-rays or sonograms and blood donations would have done a lot to confirm a diagnosis and relieve concerns; at the same time, it was reassuring to see more than rudimentary medicine at play-the stethoscope and knowledge of the heart’s function, the palpating of organs for general health, understanding a comatose condition and how to sustain a patient through one, the importance of cauterization and how blood clots, shock and the dangers of it….it was more than the time of Hippocrates, this was modern medicine of the day, seems Doc Vance was well trained back East, lol. Lucas Rush? At least we know where part of the farm’s name comes from, lol. If Lucas’ last name was shared before, it escaped me. “If He Ever Does” wake up, I suspect Lucas will have more to tell Jubal than he previously planned and I believe he hears his friend in his current state….not all medicine is pharmaceutical. 🎁 How long will it take for Lucas to wake?
