Thank you for your comments @droughtquake, you've picked up on many aspects of the story, your comments challenge me on how to develop the story and I really like that, you're keeping me on my toes. Yes Jason does seem to have developed an instant 'crush' on John, let's hope it doesn't cause too many problems in the future. Jason is is a bit of an enigma but I can't say too much at this stage. Pregnancy for any couple has it's problems and challenges, for a homeless couple they would be magnified and have some completely different and extra ones too which are bound to surface later in the story.

Through the night everything had calmed down at the shelter and all the guests had finally gone to their beds. Jeff, Steve and Kate had dealt with many questions about John/Christian, there were a few that had trouble accepting the explanations given but for the most part, with support from Beccy and Jim, most had accepted the news without much fuss. Everyone had been given assurances that John wanted nothing more than to help. On Steve's suggestion Kate left as the guest's settled back dow

Being prepared, where possible, is always an advantage when visiting hospitals and if your offering donuts and good homemade food I've only one question to ask, when I'm next in hospital will you come and visit me please, lol 😊. Luckily I've never been homeless but I have seen it from a different angle and hope I'm getting it at least close to being right in the story. If I'm not I hope that someone will let me know as constructive criticism is always good. As for Judy, she is based on a ward sister I got to know from my hospital visits as a boy, she could be hard and uncompromising but she was really a soft pussycat who cared deeply for her patients, I remember her with a great fondness and always will. 😊

Thank you @Talo Segura for the positive comments, they really are appreciated and encouraging. I hope that I'm making it interesting enough to encourage everyone to continue reading and hopefully attract new readers. It's surprising the effect that babies can have on us, I think it has a lot to do with emotional overload, lol. Most hospitals here have a cafeteria which is open during the day but if your there during evening or night time hours you are reliant on those horrible vending machines, yuk.

What can I say The Major is The Major, a true old trooper. I see Judy as the mouse that roars, 😂. I can't comment on what's in the 'special box' it could be classed as a spoiler.

Thank you @Marty, I hope to keep it as interesting as possible and I'm relying on everyone to keep me on my toes if I start to slip. We will hear from Bill again at some point and I think you will enjoy chapter 4 🙂

He felt like he was dreaming, he must be as he felt warm and comfortable. He knew he was ill, feeling like this only proved it, sleeping in an old mouldy sleeping bag under the arches can’t possibly feel this good. Then he felt a warm hand holding his, not a soft hand, not a hard one either, but firm and gentle. Then the voices started, he couldn’t make out what they were saying at first, but they were there. The Major slowly opened his eyes as the voices got clearer. Soft voices as if whoever i

Beautifully written describing what I can only describe as a 'bitter-sweet' moment in life. The possibilities of taking this story forwards or backwards, or even both, are there and your talents would definitely do it justice. I'll look forward to any additions you make.
-
Fascinating, I'm in awe of your talent.

We all need to find our own truths and need to continually search. Keeping an open mind as you do is a good place to start. Yet another thought provoking piece of work.
-
Very insightful and thought provoking, I think that we are all guilty to varying degrees and in need of the same forgiveness. Keep it up, you work shows wisdom.
-
There is nothing that can be added that hasn't already been said, it's well written with a powerful message that is just as relevant today as it was when it was first written. Thank you.

I like the opening chapter it promises to be a good story, I'm looking forward to you getting back to it so that we can read the remaining chapters.

@droughtquake from your comments I can see that you are someone with a positive outlook, which I am sure isn't always easy. Your comments and input are important and valuable to me and will hopefully help me and others to understand some of life's aspects better helping us to become better people. Thank you.

Everything you have said is 100% right and it is very much the same in many shelters for the homeless here in the Uk. For that reason I decided that I didn't want The Boot to be affiliated to any religion and to be run by good natured people with open minds who accept others unconditionally. Some of what you have highlighted may be touched on in this story.
-
@droughtquake I hope that I did not bring back any painful memories, that is not my intention and I am sorry if I did. I know the pain of losing parents, it never goes away over time it just becomes easier to live with. I also fully understand your feelings about when your time comes and I sincerely hope that that day is a very long time off, you are important to your friends and family and to many of us on here.

No spoilers, but maybe a few hints 😉 There are many different 'problems and obstacles' for homeless people to overcome and others that crop up as a result of being homeless, pregnancy is just one and a very real one for a few women that are homeless, it doesn't always turn out well. But this fiction and I'm writing it so who knows what will happen? I am happy to listen to my readers. When secrets come out it's not always plain sailing and The Boot, like all shelters for the homeless has many secrets not all will come out and for those that do there will be hurdles to overcome before things settle down. Who's secret will be next and when?
-
The Major's reasons will become clear as time progresses but I'll say no more for now. But you are right, as well as being stubborn he an independent type of person. As with many people that are homeless there are many different reasons for the problems they have and for the decisions they make, some are simple some are complex, but whatever the reasons discovering the solutions and implementing them is never an easy task, after all is said and done everyone is a unique individual including someone who is homeless.

For all the faults of our NHS (National Health Service) many hospitals here have a 'family room' attached to ICU wards and some A&E units. These are used for families waiting to see, or waiting for news of, relatives that have been admitted with very serious conditions or after very serious accidents, refreshments are very often offered along with a sympathetic member of staff who checks on them and keeps them informed of developments. Unfortunately this is not the case in all hospitals, but it is very welcome in those that do have them. I'm surprised to hear that they don't exist in the USA where you pay a fortune for your health care.

It was quiet at The Boot as Steve parked up, by the time he got to the office he could hear a hushed conversation but couldn’t make out what was being said. As he opened the door all eyes were on him, the looks of worry were all tinged with hope. “The Major has been taken to the infirmary and is in a serious, but now stable condition, I’ve left John to look after the lads while they wait for news and I’ve left him with my phone so that he can call us as soon as there is any.” Steve, tired a

Thanks to your post I've just read your stories, thank you for bringing them to my attention, they are good and you are a talented writer. I for one would love to see you back on here and hopefully have the opportunity to read more of your work, I'm sure that others would like that too.
-
This talented writer has struck again, I sincerely hope that it is not the last we hear from him. This is a story with a powerful message and a makes a very good read.
-
You have a real talent in the way you tell a story, there is real power and emotion that can be felt. I wish that you would write more I like your style and you have an important message that others should hear.

Suspense, drama and love nicely interwoven to make a great story, it deserves to be read.
