Their nearest Weyr is Benden. At this point in time (towards the end of the Long Interval) Benden is the only Weyr on Pern. It's totally not fair to either Jevikel or Gatri, which is why he was trying to let her down lightly. Everyone deserves better than Pinnacle Hold!

Coming from what is effectively Pern's version of a city is the reason why Kadin is better educated and informed about the world. It may well be that the larger Holds such as Bitra are more tolerant than those small, tucked away in the back of beyond places such as Pinnacle,

Such a touching chapter. Ned knows what he must do and that there is no way they can escape their destined roles in the ritual. The description of the old settlement, the hot day and those fleeting hours of pleasure were beautifully written. I hope Peter is right and they will find each other again (presumably at the end of Ned's long life).

Yes, Dan is sensitive to the feeling over the well, and so must a few of the customers as there is wear in the carpet where they subconsciously avoid stepping over it. Colin's never got over Jenny choosing Trevor instead of him. Colin has a lot of issues.

I don't know why, but I'd been expecting a phone call from the cinema on Thursday. Perhaps Colin wouldn't turn up for work, or something would go wrong during the day? But it obviously hadn't and my day off remained undisturbed. I wasn't sure if this was good or bad. It's a nice feeling, being indispensable. I've just finished reading Never Rest by Marshall Thornton. It's described as a modern take on Frankenstein but it could equally well fit in with the zombie genre. It's told in the 1st person POV of a 19 year old gay guy dying of leukemia. His mother is so desperate to save his life she signs him up for a very questionable experimental treatment. As he gradually realizes exactly what has been done to him he is also falling in love with another of the patients, Goth, a boy who is dying of cystic fibrosis. There are some truly horrible and memorable moments in this book and the ending will leave you thinking for a long time.

This chapter takes place the Turn before Thread starts to fall. So in terms of Benden Weyr, R'gul is still Weyrleader as Ramoth hasn't risen to mate yet.

Kadin has had the advantage of an education in Bitra; not just learning the ballads by rote, but also able to discuss them with the Harper who taught him. Jevikel's granny only taught the parts she remembered and education isn’t exactly prized in Pinnacle Hold if it's got no practical application. It's going to be very tricky for them back at the Hold, especially given their age and the whole first love experience.

Any sympathy he felt dispersed over the next few days. He’d been attempting to show Kadin the basics of beast care around the Hold before they were sent off into the hills. There definitely seems to be cause and effect in practice. If the sacrifice is made, everyone stays well; if they don't provide what Mithras wants, people die. Mithras is obviously a powerful entity, possibly this new planet's equivalent to our Mother Earth and in the past our own ancestors used to appease gods with human sacrifices. I'm hoping we learn more about what happens to those who are chosen.

Someone actually worked out the attrition rate and that the average losses would be around 1-2 pairs per Fall fought. Given that queen dragons rise more frequently in the Turns leading up to the start of a Pass, then during it, a normal Weyr (Benden at the beginning of the Ninth Pass is not normal) with 3 breeding queens rising every Turn and laying around 30 eggs at a time would be able to keep the numbers up. You're right. He dowsed and found the site of the water causing the damp problem in screen three, but what he had sensed before was something else. Dreams are a way of the mind working through new information and Terry's mind is full of theories concerning murder. However, he's had dreams in the past which foretold misfortune (Cliff's car accident and death) so there could be an aspect of that as well.

I had the feeling it was going to be human sacrifice. However, we don’t know who or what Mithras is yet. Maybe when people are pushed off the cliff, they actually enter another dimension, or Mithras preserves their lives somehow? I’m eager to read more.
