The executive order of 1933 was repealed by President Gerald R. Ford signed a law on December 31, 1974 reversing that order. Today, there is no limit on the amount of gold, be it jewelry, coins, gold bars, or gold certificates an individual can own now. However, the 1979 Archeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) does state that any relics more than 100 years old and on public or Federal land does belong to the government. Unless spotted when removing it, who's to say it was found on public or Federal land. Just purchase a piece of land close by, that isn't public or Federal land, do some digging, and claim it was found there instead.
