The example of the separation by Newfoundland and Labrador could inspire pockets of strong opposition in Canada. Attacking the newly separated lands and British forces protecting them is not likely to win US public approval who will not want to see more fighting with our longtime ally. The US does not have enough military forces to impose martial law fully across Canada. Will is not going to back Trump beyond mouthing soft words. If the occupation and efforts to establish a proto 51st state become unsettling and rocky, opposition in the US to Trump will pick up. People will smell blood, if Trump's plans falter. It takes a vote of approval by both houses of Congress to admit a new state. Trump could lose the vote due to strong opposition, .A real mess could call for invoking the 25th amendment and an end to absorbing Canada.
