  1. Redacted sounds better! ;–)
  2. There was also a documentary about the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot (a pre-Stonewall riot in San Francisco that occurred in 1966!), Screaming Queen: The Riot at Compton’s Cafeteria. The year before, a group called the Council on Religion and the Homosexual held a costume party to raise funds for the organization. The SFPD harassed attendees by taking pictures of them as they entered the venue. The police demanded entry, but lawyers explained that they couldn’t enter unless they bought tickets to the event. The lawyers were arrested. The following morning, ministers who had attended the event held a press conference describing the actions of the SFPD. The ACLU represented the arrested lawyers, but charges were dropped before the Defense had presented its case. If you haven’t seen it yet, the documentary The Times of Harvey Milk (1984) includes information about the White Night Riots (this Wikipedia article contains a lot of background information on SF’s LGBTQ history). The Mayor of Castro Street (1982) by Randy Shilts is a print biography of Harvey Milk – Randy Shilts is significant in his own right. The SFPD, while not perfect, is now much more LGBTQ-friendly with many LGBTQ officers on the force due to the events mentioned above. Pink Triangle Park is a block away from Market & Castro. It’s a tiny park that memorializes the thousands of Gay men who were persecuted by Nazi Germany during the Holocaust of World War II. It’s across Market Street from the main business area in the Castro District, so it’s not as commonly visited as it might be. The Walk of Fame, brass plaques set in the sidewalk with inspirational LGBTQ icons, doesn’t have its own Wikipedia page, but is much more visible due to its location. The GLBT Historic Society (located in the Mid-Market District) sponsors the GLBT History Museum (the second of just three established museums dedicated to LGBTQ history in the world) which is located at 4127 - 18th St in The Castro. Golden Gate Park hosts the National AIDS Memorial Grove (created in 1991, nationalized in 1996). No Secret Anymore: The Times of Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon is available from Frameline and has been broadcast on both the Sundance Channel and PBS (SF’s LGBTQ history is not just about the guys). Maybe more information will trigger a new chapter of The Golden City? ;–)

    Chapter 12

David wouldn’t have been the only one to have heard the shouts unless their house is unusually well insulated. Mr Gordon would have heard them too! It doesn’t seem to have occurred to Scottie, Devin, or David that Scottie & Devin Outed themselves to D&D’s father. But Mr Gordon doesn’t appear to have a problem with Devin being Gay – will finding out he has two Gay sons change that acceptance? ;–)

    Chapter 12

Wood is always in there somewhere! ;–)
  5. It is important to find a therapist who is at least LGBTQ-friendly. Theoretically, nearly all of them will be, but just because someone is taught to accept us doesn’t mean they really do. Unfortunately, in the US, you might not have a lot of choice in who you can see because of all the restrictions that are placed on mental health by our healthcare system.
  6. @bensau5966. I had intended to welcome you earlier, but got distracted and forgot! If you keep up today’s pace on future visits, you won’t be a Newbie for long! I’m not a writer, but I know they appreciate all the Likes and Comments we readers give them. Don’t be a stranger. ;–)
  7. Actually I saw it on the big screen back in June. It was shown during Frameline42 (the 42nd annual San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival) at the Castro Theatre. I agree that it was a great movie. My thoughts on the movies I saw at Frameline40, Frameline41, and Frameline42 are in The Pit, a closed club that I believe you can request to join. ;–)
  8. The GA author would love the joke! ;–) @sandrewn likes to include lawyer jokes in his daily Status Updates when he can find them (specifically for that author). I just wanted to point out that their profession unfortunately makes people think poorly of them. But the things we see as negative are precisely why we would want them to be our lawyers if we were in legal jeopardy! ;–)
  9. A lawyer’s job is to convince a jury and judge that his or her client is not guilty. Sometimes the way to do that involves a technicality, sometimes it’s to give an alternative, more convincing possibility to the one the opposing legal team is giving – or at least make the opposition’s story seem less convincing. That’s what you’d want your lawyer to do if you were in that situation! The lawyer has to take the information his or her client has given, along with the evidence discovered and presented in court, and provide the best spin possible in order to win the case. The lawyer might be given false information by the client. The lawyer might not believe what the client has revealed. The lawyer’s job is not necessarily to decide the veracity of the information given. That is the job of the jury and the judge. In my personal experience, the two lawyers I have known (IRL) have been very honest and truthful to me. The GA author who I know is a lawyer (not in the US) has come across to me as a very honest and truthful person too. I know there are crooked lawyers, but there are crooked priests and ministers too. No segment of society is free of liars, but most people are honest and truthful the majority of the time. I try to be honest, but I do lie occasionally (and not just white lies). ;–)
  10. I’ll let you have Richard Madden if I can have Jamie Bell! ;–)
  11. Only in Hollywood would they think an eight year old could have a child! Of course they think it’s normal for 60, 70, and 80 year old men to be coupled with 20-something women. And at the same time, 30 year old women are too old to be on the screen.
  12. Considering the numerous Tweets with this monicker, I’m not sure Rocketman is the best title for this movie. Maybe they should consider adjusting it to Elton John Rocketman! Isn’t Bryce Dallas Howard a little young to be Taron Egerton’s mother? But Jamie Bell and Richard Madden – too bad they’re not a couple in this movie! ;–)
  13. I just got home from a special preview of Green Book. I’ll just say there is a very minor scene that links the movie to the LGBTQ community, but while important to the truth of history, there were other more significant themes running through the movie. And I Highly Recommend the movie! ;–)
  14. Naturally @Timothy M. and I were among the few who saw the original posting. Timmy’s Spidey-sense alerted him to your Status Update! That and a Mention. ;–)
  15. Did you just drop another clue here? ;–)
  16. The spouse’s name is listed in parenthesis in the obituary. ;–)
  17. "Terror spread amongst the assembled as they realized the musical group they were to hear was none other than The Smashing Pumpkins!"
  18. Dustin needs to do a little research to find out that there are people who have been exposed to HIV who did not seroconvert. Exposure does not necessarily equal infection. And there are meds that can be taken to minimize the risk that a person who has been infected with HIV will develop AIDS. Even if Nate did have AIDS, many people who have HIV/AIDS are able to live very long lives by taking the cocktail. They are still working to develop a vaccine for HIV. But while there is still no cure for AIDS, it is not the death sentence that it once was. Safe sex is still incredibly important!
  19. Naughty author! Don’t ever do that again! Bad, bad, bad! ;–)
  20. Naturally Twyla has to prolong my agony by not mentioning the scrap of paper that we now know is a receipt (for the heater and the bucket?)! ;–) I suppose Jake & Twyla’s mother might have wanted Jake to die painlessly and my carbon dioxide poisoning theory would fit that. But how would she have gotten the heater and the dry ice in the bucket into Jake’s apartment without him realizing it? I know she was determined enough, but is she strong enough physically?
  21. If the bucket held a chunk of dry ice, would the extra heat cause it to melt sooner and fill the apartment faster with carbon dioxide? That would also cause the combustion in the heater to fail. Would all of that show up in an autopsy? And now I’ll go read the newest chapter. ;–)
  22. I am scheduled to see Bohemian Rhapsody with a straight female friend who is turned on by Rami Malek. Aiden Gillen (Queer as Folk and Game of Thrones), Tom Hollander (Absolutely Fabulous: Absolutely Not!, Bedrooms and Hallways, Stage Beauty, and a couple of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies), and Mike Myers are also part of the cast. The preview clips that I’ve seen look promising… ;–)
  23. Shostakovich and Schubert -- a merry mix-up for the morning
  24. I noticed an ad for Boy Erased this evening hinted that it might have Gay content, so I looked it up on Wikipedia. Apparently it’s about a teenager forced to attend a Gay conversion therapy program. Russell Crowe seems perfectly cast as the homophobic Baptist minister. Nicole Kidman, Troye Sivan, and Flea more than balance out Crowe. Joel Egerton stars, wrote, produced, and directed the movie. ;–) For @Wesley8890 ;–)
