Gilbert Baker honored with Google Doodle!

I like the font because it has a strong dialogue with what would have been popular at the time Gilbert designed the rainbow flag. Too bad about the color technology though -

If you download the font, it does function just like any other solid color font. So if you like it, it’s free to download. (But don’t ask me where to put it on a PC.) Font creators had to deal with the Postscript vs TrueType font divide. This mostly went away with OpenType font technology which incorporated both of the competing technologies. These new technologies are proposed extensions to OpenType. Since the major current Operating Systems support OpenType, your computer can handle Postscript, TrueType, and OpenType fonts. -

There are several new competing color font technologies which, as usual, are incompatible. This always make adoption difficult since font creators are reluctant to develop fonts for multiple formats – and later face the choice of disappointing customers or later giving away the font in the eventual standard after having spent the resources to revise it. There are fonts that come in multiple parts that let you layer parts in different colors to achieve a similar effect, but that also requires software that allows you to do that. A standard word processor isn’t designed to do that. Drawing applications generally would. I’ve never actually tried it myself. Hmmm. Now you’ve made me want to try… -

The biggest problem with the font is that it exploits a font technology that isn’t supported by most software. Notably, Adobe painting program (bitmapped), Photoshop, supports it, but not Adobe’s own desktop publishing software, Indesign, or drawing software (vector graphics, which traditionally has better supported text and fonts), Illustrator. Only a couple other apps support it, but not any of the less expensive consumer-oriented apps. San Francisco’s Harvey Milk Plaza (aka the exit from the Muni Metro's Castro Station) flies a huge 8-stripe Rainbow Flag at the intersection of Castro Street and Market Street. But the Rainbow Crosswalks at 18th Street and Castro Street, as well as all the Rainbow Banners lining Market Street and Castro Street, have only the more common six colors. -
When I was homeless, I met a couple different guys (at separate times) who were bipolar and paranoid-schizophrenic. Quite often people who are bipolar like their manic phase and resist taking medication to moderate their moods. In both cases, I met them when they were in their depressed mode and were very shy. As I spent time with them, things changed. One left the shelter soon after that, the other stuck around a little longer and was starting to get a little scary. I’m glad my mental health diagnosis is much milder than that…

How do you celebrate LGBTQ Pride Month?

I am sorry there are people who live where it is not safe to do anything. Just know that you are not alone. Overall, things are getting better around the world. I hope things improve for you soon. -

I try to provide answers for smart-alecs like me, but it’s always a good idea to avoid making assumptions about what someone might know. You have to learn things somewhere. And not everyone feels confident enough to ask… ;-) -

Wonderful Mac! I can feel the caring and the urge to protect. Spoken from the heart. I understand it all to well.

“This is just…Devine!” So instead of being a vampire, he’s a cannibal? I think you mean ‘divine!’ ;-) “It won’t be there long, but it does hurt.” That long? Can Stan work on a Universal Translator through Buddy? It would help when they start visiting the other Vampire Capitals. Or maybe they can buy them from the company Tony invested in…

I was watching a documentary about The Beatles Sgt Pepper album and they talked about the economic conditions in the UK in the ‘60s. As far as I can remember, as a very young child, we didn’t experience deprivation like the British did during that period. I’m guessing this story takes place in the ‘50s, before I was born, but based on what I recall, things would only have been worse. In those days, a blue collar factory job could support an entire family. The unnamed protagonist learned his lessons well. He shopped for bargains and didn’t spend more than he needed to get what he wanted. I’m sure he heard variations of what I heard as I grew up: ‘We can’t afford it. It’s too expensive.’ And going to the other parent didn’t work, they’d repeat the same words – probably because it was literally true! I mentioned what my parents used to tell us to a young mother. She couldn’t believe it, ‘You can do that?’ Of course you can – and you should! If you’re consistent, your child will learn not to try demanding things. It sounds like the protagonist’s mother was very consistent.

That’s what I tell people when they ask me why I don’t make a movie or write a story! (Plus some of us don’t have the necessary talent – I’ve seen those movies and read those stories!) I was going to say that straight guys don’t like to show off their private parts, but then I remembered all those pictures on Tumblr that prove otherwise! ;-) I think Reggie has all the normal insecurities that all teenagers have, plus the bonus insecurities that LGBTQ kids have. He also worries about things, probably even more than most kids. Maybe he can relax after he gets to the party – his mother has a sense of humor, but she’s not mean to him! ;-)

How do you celebrate LGBTQ Pride Month?
Former Member replied to Former Member's topic in The Lounge
If that poll response was a serious one, I will attempt to define what LGBTQ Pride Month is. First of all, LGBTQ means Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer. Occasionally additional letters are appended to the list, including another Q for Questioning, A for Asexual, and I for Intersex. There may be others I am forgetting or are unaware of. I apologize for any omissions. We celebrate Pride Month in June because there was a series of riots during the last weekend in June, 1969 involving patrons of the Stonewall Inn, a Gay bar in New York City. Since much of the US media is focused solely on the Boston/NYC/DC Axis, it gained more publicity than similar events that occurred in previous years in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In the US, LGBTQ Pride month is one of many months that celebrate our rich diversity and heritage. January is African-American Heritage Month (chosen to commemorate the birthdays of Abe Lincoln and Frederick Douglas – not because it’s the shortest month as some comedians suggest). Women’s History Month is March (because of International Women’s Day). May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (commemorates the first Japanese immigrants arrival in the US and the Chinese workers who helped with the completion of the first transcontinental railroad across the US). June is LGBTQ Pride Month (sometimes Heritage Month) Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated between September 15 and October 15 – why? because Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua gained their independence on September 15, 1821. Independence days for Mexico (Sept 16), Chile (Sept 18), and Belize (Sept 21) are clustered together too. Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day is observed on the second Monday of October, which also falls within that month. There are other Heritage History Months, but these are the ones PBS seems to recognize. -

Today was San José’s Pride Parade day. Los Angeles too. San Francisco won’t be celebrating until the 25th. Oakland doesn’t have their event until much later. Some of the smaller communities in the Bay Area will also have their own celebrations too. I’m not an organizer-type, but it only takes a couple people to start an event. It doesn’t have to be big. It could be a rally, a dance, a small film festival, or even a picnic! It doesn’t have to be a community event, it could be a couple of friends getting together. You don’t need to have banners, flags, or posters, but those do help set the mood! I once helped organize a benefit dance in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. I didn’t do much, but I attended all the meetings and designed the graphics (using extremely primitive methods: literal copy ’n paste using a copy machine – I designed posters, balloons, and the tickets). There were only about a half a dozen of us who managed to do it. We rented a hall in a city park, hired a DJ, purchased some soda to sell, and sold tickets. Looking back, I’m sure one of the guys fronted all the money needed, I never even thought about it at the time. -
Happy Birthday! What a way to celebrate LGBTQ Pride Month!
