  1. Lesbians subjected to "corrective rape" in South Africa Lesbians living in South Africa are being subjected to "corrective rape" and severe violence by men trying to "cure" them of their sexual orientation, human rights groups have said. Published: 1:12AM GMT 13 Mar 2009 Source Link A report by the international NGO ActionAid, backed by the South African Human Rights Commission, said the horrific crimes against lesbians were going unrecognised by the state and unpunished by the legal system. The report called for South Africa's criminal justice system to recognise the rapes as hate crimes in an attempt to force police to take action over the rising tide of violence. The ferocity of the attack became clear in April last year when Eudy Simelane, former star of South Africa's national female football squad, became one of the victims. Miss Simelane, and equality rights campaigner and one of the first women to live openly as a lesbian, was gang-raped and brutally beaten before being stabbed 25 times in the face, chest and legs. But scores more women have been deliberately targeted for rape, the Guardian reports. "Every day I am told that they are going to kill me, that they are going to rape me and after they rape me I'll become a girl," Zakhe Sowello from Soweto, told the paper. "When you are raped you have a lot of evidence on your body. But when we try and report these crimes nothing happens, and then you see the boys who raped you walking free on the street." Research shows 86 per cent of black lesbians from the Western Cape live in fear of sexual assault. Triangle, a gay rights organisation, said it deals with up to 10 new cases of "corrective rape" every week. "What we're seeing is a spike in the numbers of women coming to us having been raped and who have been told throughout the attack that being a lesbian was to blame for what was happening to them," Vanessa Ludwig, the chief executive at Triangle, told the paper. Support groups claim an increasingly macho political environment led to inaction over attacks. A statement released by South Africa's national prosecuting authority said: "While hate crimes

  9. There is an invisible world that surrounds us all. Actually there are several of them. People walk around them and through them all the time never notice. These worlds are only known to a few and are hidden in plain sight. They are everywhere but you will only see them if you know what you are looking for or if those worlds collide. _________________________________________ You know I tease story ideas in my blog. Anyone intrigued?
  10. Back in the early 90s River Phoenix went to a big concert in Moscow. He did a big tour of Moscow and saw acres and acres of memorials for what the Russians called the Great Patriotic War (that's WWII to us). River Phoenix said, "I never knew Russia was in the war." The sad fact is that we pay actors for being cute, not smart.

  14. A few weeks ago I posted a story called the Barlow Boy. It turned out to be a little controversial because of a specific element of the story. Here is a sampling of the response that I got: A storyteller has a choice. He can give you what you want to hear. He can write propaganda or be a cheerleader for the way things ought to be. In short, he can jerk you off in all sorts of ways and you will forget it. Or a storyteller can tell you something, perhaps something ugly, about yourself, humanity or the world. This kind of storyteller will take a little slice of hell and smack you in the mouth with it. Fair warning. I'm the type that is going to challenge you. I'm the type that is going to cause you tears of anguish and outrage. I'm the type that will take you to the edge and let you look over it into the abyss. Wear a helmet. It's going to be one hell of a ride.
  15. Riley You've got nothing to apologize for. Drama is about disturbing things. Excellent drama will knock you on your ass. It will shock you and leave you shaken. The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is disturbing as hell, not a fun read but is one of the most important works of the twentieth century. It helped change the world. Thank goodness that Solzhenitsyn didn't pull it because it was disturbing.

  19. I like the all male class model because it produces demonstrable results. In various pilots here in the states, boys do from 10-25% better and girls do better but not by the same margin. Kids may be better socialized in co-ed situations but with half of them turning up pregnant, perhaps they are being too well socialized.
  20. It has been proven that kids do better academically in single gender settings but political correctness trumps all. It simply doesn't matter if it is better for the kids if it is not politically correct.
