A Love Story with a Prisoner of War - 13. 28th July 1941

span style="font-family:Georgia,serif;">A date to remember

My bed, which was a single bed, felt so pleasantly minuscule on that night. Though I could hardly fall asleep with Axel beside me, it felt splendidly wonderful to be feeling Axel’s warm skins. I spent nearly the whole night marveling at Axel’s breathtaking sleeping face and enjoying his heavenly body warmth. Not long after our sensual experience, Axel soon conked out. I didn’t want to sleep, for I was so fearful that when I wake up in the morning, I would find that everything was just my imagination.

Axel’s sleeping face was the best eye candy on planet earth. He looked so beautifully fragile when he slept. I watched his muscular chest rise and fall rhythmically, which was as hypnotic as the sea. My heart was filled with a kind of indescribable happiness that I had never experienced before. My cock was half-hard. My body was stiff. My breath was short. Over the moon could not exactly describe my feeling; I felt like I was over the Pluto. To be in love with Axel – I had never imagined this would have happened. I thought Jesus abhors homosexuality and all gay men, me inclusive, would rot in hell all alone. Well, on the very contrary, God really loved me – He gave me Axel. Axel was all I ever needed.

After hours of admiring the beautiful Axel and resisting myself from kissing/touching him, I finally drifted off to sleep with Axel in my arms. I was sure that I was smiling from ear to ear as I slept because when I woke up in the morning, my cheek muscle was so sore that I could hardly eat or speak. Before Axel’s confession, I had never felt so hopeful, so in love, so thrilled, so happy, so joyful in my life. Being in love with him was by far the best feeling I had ever savored, at least a million times better than toying with my manhood. In my heart, there was only one wish – please, let me stay with Axel for the rest of my life.

                                                                                   *  *  *

I woke up at 7 something as usual, wildly glad that Axel was the first thing I saw. By that time, sunlight was seeping through the curtains, shedding a soft glow on Axel’s wonderful complexion. Axel’s long legs and genital were under the blanket that we shared and thus exposing his impeccable torso. And guiltily, I peeked at Axel’s morning glory. ‘Oh gosh! I want to taste it!’ Ignoring my own erection and sexual desire, I just lay there and watched the sleeping beauty. The early morning light looked so stunning on Axel and he looked just like a fallen angel. Axel had never failed to entrance me, even though he was not trying at all.

‘God. He is too beautiful to be mine.’ I muttered, heart thumping.

I guessed Axel heard me. He opened his eyes slowly and beamed at me.

‘Goo morning Xavier.’ Axel said in his sexy German accent, which sent me straight into heaven again.

Feeling tongue-tied, I just smiled at him and gazed into his sparkling blue eyes for minutes. Time seemed to have stopped when our eyes locked and I just felt like a captive to his wonder.

Suddenly, Axel leaned forward and kissed me on the lips. ‘Oh God, how many time does this boy plan to melt my heart?’ I thought. The kiss was pure magic and even though it didn’t last long, my heart was helplessly bursting.

‘Your lips taste like heaven.’ I said, after our lips separated unwillingly.

‘What he—a—von?’ Axel asked, smiling.

‘Heaven is the beautiful place that people go after they die.’ I said matter-of-factly.

‘Why my lips is he—a—von? You want die?’ Axel said softly.

‘No, it means your lips taste very very very good.’ I replied him.

‘I love you.’ Axel said tenderly as he ran his fingers through my hair.

‘I love you too Axel.’ I said, lost in his touch.

We lay there for nearly an hour when we finally realized that we had a long day of work awaiting us.

‘Get breakfast. I hungry.’ Axel suggested.

‘Let’s go.’ I replied.

That day was 28th July of 1941 – the first day of being in love with Axel Hertz – The Prisoner of War from the satanic Nazi Germany.

                                                                              *  *  *

Knowing that Axel was in love with me, even the tiniest thing seemed to be bright and beautiful. Though breakfast was just as ordinary as usual: white bread with scramble eggs, it was definitely the yummiest breakfast in my life. Mum and Jake had already started working in the field by the time we began breakfast, so we had the whole house to our own. We sat opposite at the table, eyeing each other from time to time. Breakfast usually lasted for a minute, but it took us about half an hour to finish the now-extraordinarily-yummy breakfast.

‘You are handsome. Honey.’ I said to Axel.

‘I know what handsome! Beautiful.’ Axel replied, blushing furiously.

‘You are beautiful. I love you so badly.’ I told him.

‘I want tell you so long. I so afraid. Boy love boy in Germany need die.’ Axel said in a sorrowful voice.

‘What?’ I said, slightly puzzled. I knew God abominates gay but I didn’t think God would want to kill a gay.

‘Yes. Boys love boys are put in camp. In camp, gas come. Boys killed.’ Axel said, in a pale face.

‘What? You must be kidding me.’ I said, feeling revolted.

‘No. I no know if boys love boys is kill in Canada. I ask Otto. He said no. So I tell you I love you.’ Axel said, eyes on the breakfast.

‘Boys love boys are not killed here. People don’t like them, that’s all.’ I said.

About a decade after that day, I came across a newspaper headlined ‘Six million Jews killed in Nazi Germany Camp’. In the article, it mentioned that the Jews, the disabled, the gays, the leftists, etc were sent to concentration camps. Some were killed, some used for medical experiments, some worked in horrendous conditions. The article contained some ghastly pictures of the camps and they really made my flash creep. My goddess, never had I thought I would be slaughtered like cattle in Germany; thank God I am in Canada.

After the longer-than-usual breakfast, we headed out to the field and began our long day of work at about nine.

‘Brother, why you two are starting so late?’ Jake asked as we approached him.

‘We overslept a little bit.’ I replied, trying to ignore him.

‘I can sense something strange is happening. You are smiling from ear to ear! What happened Xav? Axel you too! You are as well smiling stupidly. You two better tell me what is happening!’ Jake questioned us harshly.

‘It’s none of your business Jake. Shut you pathetic mouth shut.’ I scowled at him.

‘Fine. I will find out.’ He replied, shooting me an exasperated look.

Axel and I walked shoulder to shoulder to the other side of the farm, avoiding Mum and Jake.

28th July, 1941. The weather was perfect; the sun was high overhead, fluffy clouds drifting off in the distance with balmy breezes making the temperature just about right.

As we began harvesting the carrot and made sure no one was within earshot, we had a little conversation. ‘Axel. We need to make our relationship secret. We cannot tell anyone about us, especially Mum. She will get a heart attack if she finds out about us. News spread fast in this little place. The whole village is Catholic; we’ll be in great trouble if our relationship goes public. We are only lovers when we are alone in the house.’ I said slowly, hoping he would understand what I said.

‘I know. People don’t like boys like boys. I love you Xavier. I no tell mum, Jake us. I only want be with you.’ Axel said slowly, staring deep into my eyes.

Hearing him say that drained away all my power and it felt like Cupid was lodging an un-removable arrow right in my heart.

‘Axel. You are an angel from heaven. Please tell me I am not dreaming.’ I said, tears of happiness welling up in my eyes.

‘What angel?’ Axel asked.

‘You.’ I said, smiling at him. ‘So, Axel, we can only be friends whenever we are out in the public, so let’s concentrate on our work now.’

After smiling at me, Axel began to pull a carrot from the ground.

‘God, he is just so perfect. If this isn’t love, tell me what it is. It feels so good and so superb to be in love.’ I thought.

                                                                                      *  *  *

After the hard labor, we headed back home for supper. Just like any other days, we had meager and not-so-yummy food. But as I have said before, Axel knew the spell to make everything ordinary extraordinary. Just a smile from Axel across the dining table could make the ordinary chicken wings taste like foie gras (duck liver) .

‘Xavier, what happened? You have been staring at Axel since dinner started. Are you okay?’ Mum asked worryingly.

‘Oh! I’m okay! Nothing happened.’ I said, immediately stopped staring at Axel.

‘Mum, something strange is happening. I saw Xav and Axel smiled stupidly when I saw them this morning. And they both had overslept. Something strange is happening, Mum.’ Jake said accusingly.

‘Hell. No. Jake! Nothing happened. Do you believe I’m going to murder you tonight? Stop spreading rumor!’ I said, totally irritated with Jake’s blunt comment.

‘Ok. Xavier, if anything happened, tell us okay?’ Mum said softly.

‘Nothing happened. Okay?’ I reassured her as Axel just sat there observing.

‘Fine. Xavier, go and do the dishes, will you?’ Mum said.

‘Okay.’ I replied, slightly worried by mum and Jake’s accusation.

Axel helped me with the dishes. After that, we had our English lesson.

At about 11pm, we made sure mum and Jake had gone to sleep. Then, we headed to my room and...you know... had some fun.

Sad but true: the Germans thought of gay people as being lower than the Jews. They had to wear pink bands or pink something or other, so everyone would know they were gay. Hundreds of years ago, my mom took me to the city (NYC), to see "Bent". "Bent: was a play about gay people in concentration camps. Richard Gere played the main character. This was during his "American Gigolo" days. We were sitting like three rows from the front, and let me tell you, when he came waltzing up on stage totally naked, you could hear the collective gasp of the whole audience. lol But it was a really sad play and the way the Nazi's treated gay people was horrific. And of course my ancestors were treated only a teeny bit better than the gay people.

I'm glad A&X realize they need to keep their love a secret. Jake was extremely annoying in this chapter. I just wanted to tell him to stfu and mind his own business.

Great chapter, Joe. Oh, you spelled dining wrong: dining table, with one 'n'. :) But never call me a grammar Nazi, I HATE that term. It sort of makes light of all the horrendous things they did, and that is something that should NEVER be taken lightly.

Ok, coming down off my soapbox now. Sorry. Looking forward to chapter fourteen. :)

I didn't know I typed dinning... lol didn't spot that while proofreading. I am glad that you like the chapter =) Some unexpectedness is coming!!! hehehehe >v< will I be forgiven if i skip updating this week? coz I have an essay to finish up........=(

I can't believe that I missed the posting of this! I saw chapter 14 and was confused! (You slipped this one by me :P ) As always, Joe this is a beautiful story. I like to see how A & X's relationship is developing. They are so cute together.

One concern I have and I'm not Canadian so I'm not sure about their laws but you might want to do some research or get with one of our "Northies". If you have researched that's great, then I'm the one mistaken but I thought that homosexual acts were still illegal in Canada until the late 1960's. I don't think they were punishable by death, not like Germany but they were not allowed to be openly gay (the shunning from the Catholic Church is a whole other worry)

Great story. I look forward to more :D

Somehow I missed more than one chapter. I was not online for a bit though b/c of some problems going on....but it made it kinda fun to be able to read a few chapters in a row. I really was surprised when he explained his reasoning for the friends only comment. It wasn't on my radar when I thought about reasons why he ruined Xav's birthday surprise. It was a great reason and extremely telling of his feelings for Xav since he wanted to protect him as well as himself. First, it reminds people of the fact that though the killing of the Jews in concentration camps is the well-known facts about the war, there were millions of other people killed too for such reasons. I like when story makes you think and reflect. It was surprising to me that he let Axel stay in his room in the morning and risk being found by Jake or Mom. I also agree that Jake was very annoying and could cause trouble for the boys. I can't help but worry that they will be found out and I know that could have dire consequences for them both. They will have to work much harder to act like friends. In Jake's defense, they were not talking and their interactions were clearly icy the day before. The sudden comradery would stand out all the more. I'm enjoying the story a lot. In some spots the things he said seemed a bit too poetic for a boy his age. I hope that Otto doesn't wonder why Axel wanted to know how to say those things. Off to ch. 14!

p.s. thanks for the shout out ;) hope I'm not too critical of you lol.

I tried to do some research on the legality of homosexuality in Northern Canada during the war period. I couldn’t find any websites that clearly indicated its status. Most webpages say the issue was always shunned at that time, but there seemed to me no specific laws that made it illegal or punishable.

Even it was punishable, I believe it would be ignored during 1940s. As most men were mobilized to fight in the war, I don’t think there would be any people to ‘judge’ whether it is wrong or not. People were all preoccupied with food production, so things like homosexuality should be of second or even lower priority.

Anyway, thanks for pointing this out and supporting this story all along. =3

I love readers who are always being critical of my work. I am a tyro in story-telling, so your critiques are of the utmost importance to my road to a more professional writer. Don’t hesitate to critique my work, I love to know how the readers feel and think. I know there are a lot of rooms for improvement in my work, and only through hearing from you guys could I really learn how to improve my work. Negative comments are as highly appreciated as positive comments.

Whether A & X would be found out, stay tuned for the upcoming chapters. I hope it won't break your heart (?)
