Doing It Again - NaPoWriMo April 2024 - 3. April 14 to 20

*<>*<>*

14 Prompt: Write about an antique clock

Always you’ve sat upon the mantle
solid and weighty, you tick and tock
keeping time
chiming the quarters, then the hours
and only Father is the one to wind

15 Prompt: Describe your feelings after meditation

Opening closed eyes
a sigh escapes my lips
returning to now
still air fills my lungs
my breath is precious
my body and mind focus
a final deep breath in
I sit up in reality

16 Prompt: Write about being stuck in an elevator

Smoothly rising until the shudder and jolt
then my conveyance is no longer
Frantically mash the buttons
there is only silence in the little square box

I know I’m dangling here
I know I can’t fall…can I?

Pounding only hurts my hand
I use the phone, breathing evenly,
I sit awaiting rescue

17 Prompt: Write about your father

He was a man I never pleased
on his deathbed, that never eased

A man with a violent touch
I wonder why I care so much

My heart says don’t be cruel
why continue to play the fool?

He is dead and buried now
through cluttered feelings, I still plow

After years of asking why
is it time to say goodbye?

18 Prompt: Write about a walk in a park

The sun is warm on my face today
it promises the reality of spring
buds come on softening tree limbs
and grasses are brilliant green
dandelions dressed in yellow, nod
we wander by loosening winter
while from below, tendrils rise up

19 Prompt: Death

And then we die
After we’ve lived
We hope a full life
In the blink of an eye

20: Add the title to the end

My companion of many days
it follows like an obedient shadow
whispers truths that are lies in my ear

peace and silence are naught but wish
rare twins I desire and seek but
things I’ll never have or hear

fear

I really liked these, tim. Especially, the one about the clock.

Talk about timing (pun intended 🤗) as just this morning I was giving serious thought to two noisy tick tockers and whether I should start up that noise again. They are battery operated, but one is a really nice Mantle clock that looks like a true chime clock.

Apologies for all the red. I'm using a basic tablet atm and I have no clue how the font changed colour.

Edit: Weird, almost all the red turned black when I saved the post. 🤔

Nicely done tim.

So..

14 & 15 Great imagery on both of these.

16..I've been stuck in an elevator.. granted it was 1986 and a bunch of us on our high school trip to Europe decided it was perfectly fine to cram 11 of us in an elevator meant for a max capacity of 5 or 6. I think we scarred the hotel staff for life when they pried open the doors in between floors and we all crawled out like it was a clown car.

17. It's a good thing he's gone. You owe him nothing. He's not worth wasting emotions on.

18 & 19 More great imagery.

20. xoxo, my friend

Thanks for these, tim.

These all conjured up various images in my mind. But I loved Walk in the Park, perfect for a summers day. The Antique Clock reminds me of the clock, from when I was much younger.

Thanks for these tim xx

I was taken by the idea of #20; I could feel the fear before I ever read the title at the end. I likewise felt the frustration and uncertainty in #16.  I’m not sure I could have dealt with #17 and #19 with anything like your honesty. This was a great third installment.

The red is odd, but no worries.  That's great about the clock. We had one; it was noisy, but there was comfort in the deep tic-tock and its chimes.  Thanks for reading these and for your comments. I hope you get your tablet sorted out.  :) 💖

Thank you, chris. I'm glad some of these brought some pleasant images and memories for you. I have always thought of you as around 30ish. :)

Thank you, Parker.  I'm sure you could deal with both of them superbly.  Thank you for reading them and your comments.

I like each for various reasons, not that I've ever been stuck in an elevator - I could only imagine the fear and/or claustrophobia.  As for 17 and 19:  my father wasn't violent - he simply stopped communicating with me at age 12 for what I think now was that he recognized my sexual orientation when I certainly was not aware nor accepting of it.  I didn't meet his vision of his oldest son except to be responsible for the family should something happen to him.  (Funny thing:  that's exactly what I ended up doing!) I was angry with him for the longest time and have really tried to let it go, even if the disappointment does rear its head periodically even at my age! It simply propelled me to be the father to my son that I wish my father had been to me.

As for 19:  I was falsely diagnosed with a terminal condition 31 years ago and given 2 years max.  So...I simply paid for my funeral and burial in advance.  It simply has made me more appreciative of every day.  I am not afraid of death - at least I don't think so.  I have made all the arrangements so that my son won't have to deal with any legal complications (probate).

I am really enjoying your poetry and the images it creates as I read them.

This was an interesting collection of poems. All were thoughtful and well written! I especially enjoyed 18: A Walk in the Park. It makes me think about spring being here and the pleasant changes in the weather. Thanks, Tim. It is always a pleasure to read your writing.

Thank you for sharing the info about your life.  I'd say your son is lucky to have a dad like you.   I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment on these poems.. i appreciate it very much.
