Journey to Salvation

   (9 reviews)

Set in The Old West, we come upon Moss and Link, two men at a precipice in their young lives. Monsters, real or imagined, come in all forms. Perhaps the most dangerous kind are the real ones, people who believe they have the right, for whatever reason, to abuse and control through fear. When innocence is viciously taken, it can be a long road back to trusting, both yourself and others.

This story contains some sexual content, as well as different forms of abuse. You will also find my version of 'western speak', which breaks many of the rules of grammar, tenses, and punctuation. It is a flavor I hope you can bear.

Once again, we are transported back to the environs of Bearpaw by the undisputed master of the western genre!

A wonderful story about honesty and longing, and having the courage to make the connection of two kindred souls!!

Response from the author:

Yes, Doc, this story is about honesty and longing, and lending each other strength. I find The Old West a romantic time, a different time often void of frivolities, where loneliness was more the norm. Finding someone to share life with is always a journey worth taking. Cheers!

Another amazing tale from GA's master of the western romance stories.  Moss and Lincoln (Link) are two teenage cowboys riding together because their destinations are fairly close to one another.  During the ride, they share stories about their lives, and it becomes clear that Moss has had it far worst than Link.  Their talks and confessions during their journey, along with unspoken tension, makes them rethink what they want out of life, but is it enough to make them change their plans?   You'll have to read this wonderful tale to find out, and I'm sure you'll be happy you made that decision after reading this short story.

Response from the author:

I don't know if I'm a master of anything, but it is nice to know I have an audience for my little indulgence of telling western tales. I start these and get lost in them as they flow out, and the fact there is a following for this type of story makes me happy. You are very kind, always supporting other writers, and I commend you for it, Bill, and I thank you. I always try to follow your example. Cheers, my friend.

2 men who finally admitted to each other they wanted each other and make a life with one another. This western tale is one that should be read by all! It is that awesome!

Response from the author:

Thank you so much, Sherye! I love interacting with readers, and you are always a pleasure. Thanks for your support and recommendation. I find westerns pure escapism, a chance to imagine different times and places... and challenges... and romance.

Headstall - the king of the old west. Reading this story makes me want to revisit Larkspur. Once again the author manages to transport the reader to a different time, a different world, with the exact same feelings and hardships we sometimes face today. Two men who share the same feelings finally manage to talk. In the end, is there anything better than open communication? Certainly not if the outcome is either a story like this, or a development like in this story. Thank you Headstall, your stories are always appreciated a lot.

Response from the author:

Oooops. I dropped my crown. :P Seriously, thank you Pascal for the kind words and support of my writing. I love these characters and this little tale, and I hope readers will take the journey as well. I too yearn for Larkspur... it's nice to know I have company. :)

Gary has done it again—woven a tale so rich with feeling, so alive with truth, it doesn’t just tell a story, it invites you to live inside it. His gift lies not only in the way he crafts characters, but in how he makes each moment pulse with longing, hope, and redemption. Every sentence feels like a heartbeat, every chapter a step toward something sacred. You don’t just read his work—you surrender to it.

Journey to Salvation is more than a title—it’s a promise. A promise of transformation, of grace earned through struggle, of beauty found in broken places. The emotional honesty here is staggering. Gary doesn’t shy away from pain, but he never lets it eclipse the light. He writes with a kind of magic that makes you ache for the next word, and when it ends, you’re left changed.

If you’re looking for a story that moves you, that reminds you why we read in the first place—this is it. Read it. You’re going to love it.

Response from the author:

Wow. Thank you, Albert. What a glowing recommendation... not sure I deserve such praise, but I'll take it with pride. :heart:Moss's story proves heartbreaking  as the layers slowly reveal themselves, but humans are resilient no matter what age they live in is. Link's courage and honesty made the story possible. Cheers! Gary

Headstall is undoubtably the "Western Master", but all of his tales are 5-Star, Homerun, Slam Dunk, Golden Buzzer hits!! "Journey To Salvation" is a beautifully done journey to love and understanding!!

Response from the author:

Thank you, Onim. You are very kind to say such. I like these characters. They are good men, good for each other, and showing courage when push came to shove. Connections can be hit and miss, but something kept these two guys in each other's orbits. Yes, I write in all kind of genres, but westerns are like a comfortable pair of boots for me. Git along, little doggie. :)

Short, sweet and to the point.... used to like dates like that (`cept for the short part) every now and then. Yep, WOOF.

Headstall is.. a straight shooter, a guys guy. Not ashamed but possibly bashful are his characters. He can paint a picture in your mind of a hot lawman that always starts with the hat on his head. I was gone from here for almost a year, it was a joy to see this writers name pop into my email!

Think the Westerns started with "Sidewinder" him sharing his love for open lands, horses and good men, the order varies as the days do. He gets into the dialect of the characters which makes the read especially fun.

Now he does other genres too! First I heard of him was with "Cards on the Table" a great read for a rainy week. Like a tie-dyed Dead-Head I've read it thrice now!

Geeze I'm ramblin' tonight... BOC's Secret Treaties is shaking my home!

Leather & packed jeans, can imagine the musk now

Hey Gary, you can file this a a review for you if you'd like to.

Response from the author:

Lol. J J, you are making me blush here, but making me grin too. What a glowing testament from a faithful reader. I can't thank you enough. I don't need to write the western genre, after all it is not the most popular, but I want to. It feels good and takes me back to my horse-crazy childhood and black and white TV. I appreciate those who come along for the ride and enjoy my western speak. Everything I write can be called a labor of love, but these Old West tales have become near and dear to me in a special way. Thanks again, buddy.

This is simply a beautiful western tale.

Moss and Link, two young men riding together sharing their stories.

Read on to discover more.

Response from the author:

Thank you, Chris. I always feel good about supporting the anthologies, and this tale was fun to write. Moss and Link came to life in that first scene and they are with me still. :)
