Going to the Movies--NaPoWriMo 2017 - 2. Day 6 - Day 10

#6

Inspired by AC’s Ghazal prompt using the final speech from the movie ‘The Great Dictator’.

I don’t want to rule, or hate.
I don’t want to conquer, raid.

Greed is poisoning men’s souls,
leaves the heart a barren state.

Technical evolution
should not divide but conflate.

Hate will pass, dictators die,
and power they will abate.

Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavers!
Tear down walls and crash the gate!

People do have the power!
Life is for us to create.

Work, future, security—
needs dictators never sate.

Let us fight to free the world!
Soldiers! Let us weed out hate!

(I don’t think I did this great speech justice, but I tried.)

#7

Inspired by this scene from the movie ‘Love Actually’.

The moment
Rick bared his soul to Elizabeth Swann,
to be trampled on,
ridiculed,
ripped out,
but instead he got kissed,
a short taste of ‘what was never meant to be’
that helped him to move on.

#8

Inspired by this scene of the movie ‘Dance with the Wolves’ and, loosely, by the prompt ‘Mistakes’.

A needless kill
just for the fun of it
because they are entitled to
by

Whom exactly?

#9

Inspired by the ‘Scars’ prompt by Janet Hutchinson, kindly forwarded to me by Valkyrie and the movie The Great Pretender

See 17.25

Surely, the time must be coming when you will really want to spend your life with someone?

Yes, but no one wants to share their life with me.

Can anybody find me somebody to love?

The more I open up, the more I get hurt.

(I try and I try and I try)

Basically I’m just riddled with scars and I just don’t want any more.

(I got no feel, I got no rhythm)

(I keep losing my beat.)

I’m petrified of being alone.

(I’m all right.)

I like to shut myself away, but I wouldn’t want to be on a desert island.

(One day I’m gonna be free.)

(Find me somebody to love.)

This is part of an interview with Freddy Mercury, shown in the film ‘The Great Pretender’ and his song ‘Somebody to Love’ (in brackets).

#10

Inspired by the Antidote Poem prompt by Janet Hutchinson kindly forwarded to me by Valkyrie

Dead Poets Society: O’Captain, My Captain

A mere shell,
your soul frozen to ice,
until beautiful words melt it away,
and you shout them, whisper them
and, in the end,
you stand up,
for what you believe.

This is a great selection, Addy. I think you did all the scenes justice.  Dead Poet's Society is one of my all-time favorite films, so I have to say I loved #10.  Great job

I agree with Val on you having done justice to the scenes. I loved these also, but the Dead Poet's Society inspired poem was just great!

Thank you, Val. I couldn't have done this without your input. Dead Pout's Society is a great film and I almost didn't dare to take a scene and write a poem, lol.

Thank you, Def. I'm glad you liked #10. I was very nervous when I wrote these poems, that you and Val think I did those scenes justice means a lot. :)

A powerful week; almost overwhelming in its breadth and scope.... I find No. 10 to be the most moving, but then again, I've never seen Dead Poets Society without tears - and that included the first time I saw it as a teenager in the theater. Powerful stuff here...

Val's prompt give my chaotic thoughts structure. I have pieces of films in my head and I don't know how to sort them. Charlie Chaplin's speech always makes me cry...and determined. We don't need to speak about Dead Poets Society...

Thank you for your kind words, AC.
