Finding A Voice - 10. Chapter 10

Only one for this chapter, 'Questions'. This is a powerful poem that still resonates today, even if it was written back in 2002! Enjoy!

Questions

What is love?

Intense feelings between two people?

How can a friend be so cruel

as to try to change who you are?

Why would a 'friend',

that seen you blossom into

who you are today,

attempt to make you who you are not?

Why would this friend point out things

that are essentially you,

twist them, making you shit?

On your birthday?

Only making themselves feel better?

So conniving and disheartening,

bringing you down on your joyous day?

How could people be so vile to judge

you based upon your complexion,

your features, your speech, or even your ethics?

Is it to boost their egos?

A hidden pain?

Or even a loss?

How could a mother drown her children,

the very lives she created?

How could a father beat and disown his son?

Just because of a loss of name?

An archaic tradition?

What is happening to humanity?

Mistreatment to the loving Mother,

pushing Her to the edge, about to break.

Slash, burn, dump, spill, fill, kill?

Humanity for all?

All but Her?

A loving face or a one night stand?

AIDS, STI, pregnancy,

mistrust, abuse, degrading, lies,

faithful, harmonious, ecstatic?

Will love grace my presence?

Why does everyone else have control?

Prime Minister, President, King, Emperor?

Is it nature or nurture?

Majority rules every aspect

if you are part majority.

Yet any minority you show,

what are you?

Are people confused or not?

Why must a friend flip out?

To the point of physicality?

Truth behind friends.

Perceptions of pain and bliss

thrown away by the side?

FWB, partners, or lovers?

How could they shred a heart?

Confetti, purée, photon-sized.

Beyond recognition, beyond repair.

Cheating, greedy, spiteful, blind?

A love that ended too soon?

Or too afraid of letting go?

Friend, yet more than that.

Yearning for companionship,

hearing a soothing voice.

Distance, wide and vast.

Wondering if they feel the same?

Two hearts, one soul?

King of Wishful Thinking?

All I have are questions

to the World I Know.

Will I ever have answers?

Just like Lil' Kim and Tootsie Pops,

the world may never know!

I hope you have enjoyed the selection. Comment freely, suggest constructively, and thank you.

So many questions... Often with no answers. As for friends, they sometimes disappoint. Also, sometimes never really were friends. You have to own and be you. F*ck the rest. As long as you carry yourself as a good person. Well written.

I appreciate the love!!  This is was in my early twenties and away from home for the first time. I didn’t know how to express myself but through my writings. So the end result is this timeless piece, in my opinion!  Thank you!!

Another thoughtful poem exuding emotions. The questions you asked are relatable, understandable. We often question "Why?" about humankind and the inherent tendencies to be cruel. Thanks for sharing this piece.

Thank you.  At the time, I was working through my feelings by writing, now the poem feels relevant and timeless.
