Into the Past - 1. Into the Past

Into the Past

Salt on the breezy wind around us
I feel the sand between my toes and listen to the waves crashing on the shore

Sweat drips from my brow as I stand and cheer as the air is ripped apart
by the crack of a bat connecting hard

Sunny days stretch out
endlessly as my youth remains
blissfully ignorant of the ravages of time

Frosty mornings greet me as the school bell beckons
Inside we learn to read and count as
our fading daydreams drift away

Fiery colors paint the trees a living firestorm
of red, orange, and gold as the sun retires
The horizon douses its flame

Friends and family giving thanks
for what they now have
before it falls victim to circumstance

Winds howl through the night
The ground a seasoned bride
donning another pristine white dress

Wreaths of evergreen adorn doorways
A testament to symbolic rituals of
idolatry in the name of faith

Weary parents hide evidence of deceit
leaving crumbs behind to feed
the innocent wonder of a child for another year

Some say in like a lion and out like a lamb
it's never the same from year to year as
the cloak of darkness is cast off letting in the light

Scents of new blooms fill the surrounding breeze
as pastel colors greet the newborn babes
stumbling to their feet on gangly limbs

Wind chimes bring back memories of stolen kisses
The music makes our bodies sway
knowing these days are numbered

Soon the cycle will begin once more and time
marches onward consuming youth as
seasons disappear into the past

Thanks for reading. I'm not a poet by nature but a certain special person encouraged me to give it a go.
Thanks tim ❤️

This poem seems to be nostalgia-kissed. It had me running in the halls of my elementary school again, seeing the seasonal decorations taped on the walls, perceiving the floor wax, and feeling -- more like scenting -- the heat of my fellow school kids' bodies after we came in again from lunchtime play. Thanks for evoking this in me

Yeah.. my memories pulled out some good imaged for this. Thanks for reading!
