Are Choices Even Real?

   (4 reviews)
Genres: General Fiction,
Sub-genres: Drama, Slice of Life

My free-verse entry for the 2026 poetry anthology. Lately it seems that what seems like being a choice, really isn’t. Are we really free to decide any aspects of our own lives?

I used the “dark” tag, but that may not be strong enough. This is definitely laced with mental anguish. Therefore, this may be very disturbing, so be forewarned, and only read if you feel you can handle themes of suicide.

Like the other readers and the author warned, please read the warnings first before reading this poem. It is so true and you might see yourself in the poem.  I know I did! True on every word. Not going to tell you what the poem is about cause it would be a spoiler if I did! So read it and find out for yourself.

Response from the author:

Thanks much. While it may be dark, those of us who see themselves in it need to stick together. If you have felt like ‘this is me’ after reading it, follow it. Sherye had a great idea that I’ll be making a blog post about and I’ll link to it in the comments

Readers should heed the warnings, but there is honesty here in this poem, and for me, that is what poetry is often about. Baring your soul, being vulnerable, exposing your perceived weaknesses... that can be a painful thing, but a purging one. Thanks for this. Cheers!

Response from the author:

Thanks for the great review. I suppose this was purging.

This one had warnings, and I knew exactly what I was getting into when I started reading. But, goddamn it, I was once again compelled to write a review. I could only aspire to create something so raw and real.

Response from the author:

Thanks, you’re right about it being raw, real too, I suppose. But I think I’m in a better place in my head these days.
