Weekly Wrap Up (Sept. 29 - Oct. 5)

Well it finally happened :(

After several nights of the temperature dipping down to just above 0C/32F, and me going to bed a bit hotish (;)) in the evening and waking up shivering, I think I got the start of the first cold of the season. Well, not a full blown one. Today was a day that was focused on wearing a couple of layers of sweatpants and sweatshirts and some wool socks. Also my eyeballs are floating a bit with all the water I have drank. The throat isn't that sore anymore, so I might get to bed at a decent hour tonight and hopefully write it off as a one day cold

Has anyone else been visited by the cold fairy yet this fall? Or am I the only one to live in a climate that it is getting this cold?

I read an article which says my city gets about 20cm/7.87" of snow on average in October😮. More so than any other city in Canada except for Yellowknife in the North West Territories. Which I think is above the Arctic Circle 🥶.

Now I know some of you live in Florida or California, or on the Mediterranean. Some of you might be in South Africa or Australia where it is spring. But if you are not in the tropics :gikkle:, what is the outlook for your October? Do you usually see any snow at all, or is it more a November or even a December thing?

Rather than natter on forever about my woe is me, sob story of my cold and how cold it is getting out, let's move on to happier things  like wrapping up the week of the GA News Blog.

I do want to put in a special call out to all those on the American East Coast that had Hurricane Helene devastate your homes and communities and those in Nepal with the unprecedented flooding :( . Or family members. No matter how bad I think I have it, it is not in the same category as others. We all are thinking about you and hoping that slowly things start to get better, hour by hour, and day by day.

On Monday, it worked out perfect this week! Cia was able to put the CSR Discussion Day on the last day of September:

Tuesday, Myr dropped in and counted up the likes and reactions to bring us a Deep Dive into Non-Fiction:

Thursday, since the entry deadline of the 2024 yearly anthology has past, Valkyrie took the time to look ahead and gave us a road map of upcoming events:

Well like the weather, it looks like Myr's mood turned as he started posting words again that I don't know :P Here is the recap of the Words of the Day:

complacency, misanthrope, dilettantism, banal, osteopathy, ambivert, ascetic

Steve, that's what happens when you live in the remote north (often referred to as Canada).  I live in Georgia (US not the country) and yesterday it was 82 F (27.8 C) and this morning it's 65 F (18.3).  We seldom get snow, and if we do it only lasts a day or two before it melts, but we do occasionally get hit by hurricanes, such as Hurricane Helene which just went through here and caused quite a bit of damage.  Btw, good luck with that cold.

October weather in north NY, and yes, there is more to NY than NY city... Is hit and miss here in the valley. We've had our share of weather this year with flooding and high winds. Most of the issues could have been avoided if the roads were built and cared for properly. Now the leaves are confused as our temperature keeps bobbing up and down. Colors are not as vibrant this year. It was in the 70'sF/22C yesterday and dropped into the low 40'sF/5C last night causing the heat to come on... We expect snow tonight possibly in the higher elevations... courtesy of the cold front from our northern neighbors...

I'm all for being neighborly, so if you northerners could hold onto your cold air and some of you southerners could send up some of that 80f weather, we would be thankful. I expect I'll see snow for Halloween this year. Thanksgiving and Christmas should be white too. The amount of snow all depends on the Great Lakes and when they freeze over. Interestingly enough. Frozen lakes mean more snow. *Shrugs* I have a snowblower, so I don't care either way, but it's not nice being out in below 0 F/-18C in the storm opening up the driveway in blowing winds and snow.

Snow in October isn't unheard of here.  In 2006 we had an early October lake effect storm that decimated the trees in my area and left us without power for about ten days. I remember sitting in my apartment and listening to the all tree branches and trees snapping and falling.  My poor little hawthorn folded like an umbrella :(  My car would have been smooshed by a giant branch, but it landed on some power lines instead, which saved it.

This year we haven't really had much of a fall.  Temps have been more summer-like than fall-like.  The trees aren't showing nearly as much color as they should be.  I spent the weekend away and wore shorts and a t-shirt.  October is looking to be pretty mild so far, although you never know.  When I was a kid, I would be so happy when I didn't have to wear a winter jacket over my Halloween costume when I went trick-or-treating.

The sooner it snows on @wildone's wee head the better off we all are. :D Or maybe that's just my joy in life? He brought it on himself, to be honest...
