Are you happy with your job?

Simple question: are you happy with your job? Do you want to change? Can you see yourself doing it for the rest of your life? How important is your job to you anyway? (ie: if you teach, do you think of yourself as a teacher...?)

 

I'm a student, so I don't really have a job yet. But my line of study is science and engineering, and although I neither have the right nor the inclination to consider myself fully an engineer... I am, as of now, pretty happy with my line of study. I do believe in what I'm studying, and as much as I love writing, I'm glad that I'm not majoring in that. Although, if life as an engineer consists of problem sets, I'm getting off at the next station.

I hate my present job with a fiery passion, hence why I applied for a new one yesterday. I'm double majoring in Physics and Engineering and I'm pretty happy so far. I really don't give a shit about the Physics degree, it's just a resume booster really. I want the engineering degree because I REALLY want to get into alternative energy research and the engineering degree is a significant stepping stone to that.

I don't really care for my job. I'm mostly a student, but I work as a TA for two classes, and I hate stupid people. None of the smart ones come to me, just the dumb ones. Gah. But alas, the pay is decent and I don't have much of a choice. I enjoy my schoolwork though. And I get to be Dr. Menzo by age 23, so yay.

I recently got promoted to a Manager position at Express, and so far I like it. There's a lot of responsibilities that I recently acquired, and sometimes I can't believe I actually put up with such stupid customers that have no shame, but eh. It's challenging, it brings out the competitive side in me, and the perks are fun. It's definitely not something I'm going to do for the rest of my life, but while I'm a student, it's a good part-time job. It's definitely made me a much more social person, and it's helped me mature. I take my job very seriously, and will not have anyone questioning my work ethic, but that's true of school and anything else really.

 

As for my major, I'm seriously considering switching over to Criminology/Law & Society. I just don't think I have the passion to be a premed major. I may double major and then see which one calls out to me more, but either way, I'll either be going to Law School or Med School.

LOL, interestingly enough I am a teacher. Well sorta. I'm subbing. I actually love it, I really like children, I love that I go to a completely different school, grade, and subject everyday. I just walk away at the end of the day and I don't really have to do any prep or make plans for the next day, and best of all I can have absolutely any day off without any notice (I'm only required to take 4 assignments a month, I usually take 4 or 5 a week, but in any case all I do is not answer the phone if I don't want to work).

 

It's most definitely not what I want to do long-term though. To be honest at this point in my life I'm completely chillin' and bumming around. My number one priority is just to have fun and enjoy this stage of my life. I'm enjoying my job though and I am considering getting certified and maybe teaching full time for a bit. The pay would be better and eventually I might like a tad more stability with where I'm going and what I'm doing. For example the hardest part right now is when I leave for the day and realize that chances are I'll never see the same kids again. Even if/when I do start doing it full time though even that would be pretty transitory. In about 6 months to a year (maybe two) I plan to go back to school and start work on my Master's of Social Work. While I'm doing it, and if I can set up my schedule properly I'll continue to teach. If not I'll look for something else.

 

Once I'm done with my degree I'm going to move into my actual *gasp* career and do counseling. I'm actually planning to more than likely specialize in GLBT issues. I'll probably also begin volunteering for support hotlines soon. Still, my goal is simply to have my Master's and get started by the time I'm 30. The next several years are just for me, and I'll pretty much do anything that strikes my fancy.

That's pretty nifty! I definitely plan on getting my PhD eventually too, but my only real goal on that one is doing it by the time I'm about 35. I know I could have taken things much more quickly, but I figure I'm personally a lot more likely to look back on my life later and say "Boy, I wish I'd gone out with my friends more" or "Gee, it woulda been cool to do X when I was younger" than I am to say "Man, I wish I had finished my degree sooner" or "If only I'd begun my career sooner".

 

I'm certainly not trying to convince other people to do that at all! It's just what I think is best for me.

An extremely timely question Currently, I'm happy with the job, but not happy with the new manager I've got -- to the extent that I'm seriously considering changing. My options are to transfer within the company (my preferred option), but if I have to quit, I've already started looking at what my options are. My wife thinks she can get me a job with her company (as her boss, actually -- which is where we met, but that's another story). I also suspect I could survive contracting to my existing customers.

 

I don't want to make any decisions now, though, because I've got a months leave coming up. I don't want to do something now that's really just due to me needing a holiday....

My answer was : yes, very much ! because my age. I'm retired, but still working for 2 reasons :

1. I dont know what to do else ,

2. It's nice to be able to get a little more in the purse, just to pay my monthly need of pipe tobacco

Of course the dumb ones come to you! lol...they're the ones that need the help. The smart ones just do the work on their own, no problem. But hey, if anything, you can get some laughs out of those stupid people. Btw, you remind me of my sister- she says that all the time.

That's a great attitude, and one that everyone should have. Having time for yourself or enjoying a specific time in your life is important, especially before you head off into a new chapter of your life (higher education, new job, etc). I would love to chill around after graduation, but I'm lucky to get a five, maybe six month window of 'me' time. Parents are looming over me- lecturing, blahhh... :wacko:

Mostly, I love it. I'm an Educational Assistant Substitute at an elementary school. I only work at the one small school, so I know nearly all the kids and faculty. It has a great family feel to it. Some days are bad, but mostly I enjoy it.

 

Strangely enough, if I had to describe myself, I'd say I was a writer, and throw in the EAS as an afterthought. I love my job, especially because it leaves me a lot of time to write, but all things being equal, if I had to choose, I would be a writer.

Chemistry was actually my most difficult subject too. I actually finished up with an "A" in it, and I really didn't do that much work for it outside the classroom, but boy did I work my butt off in the classroom to get it!

 

Never being one to be silent when I need assistance or have questions, it got to the point that one day in class after my teacher had finished explaining a new concept and was still facing the board, she said, "Yes, Kevin?" as she slowly turned around to discover that I did indeed have a question

I know what you mean. For all the science and math I do, a description of myself would be incomplete without fixing "writer" somewhere in it -- and a writer of fiction. Not to be confused with problem set answers and lab reports...

LOL, I confess in some regards it's mostly a matter of being lazy. I probably could have figured out a great deal of it on my own, but I expect it to just "snap", and I rather someone keep explaining it to me until it does

 

I also have what I suppose is the sort of bad attitude that school work should interfere as little as possible with outside activities, so I worked very hard to make sure I understood something while I was there because I knew I probably wouldn't give it another thought once I left

Well if it counts for anything, I found it much easier and more enjoyable than chemistry.

 

I'd always rather take a humanities or social science course over a science course though.
