Conner Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Chapter 17 was just fantastic! Talk about a roller coaster ride with loops and twists. I had that lump in the throat thing going on when Wilcox ordered Calvert over to the Rattlesnake. I remember thinking, "...so this is how Mark separates Granger from Calvert. Oh well, at least Rattlesnake is heading home to England in two weeks. " Then of course Jackson saves the day and I'm like WOOT! WOOT! all happy again. I need a scotch...or six.
Tiger Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Yeah, I was going to be pissed. I was thinking, "So he's alive, but Wilcox is going to make him wish he were dead." I was pissed, but then I read on. I think there will be a separation eventually. You have to remember, Conner. There will be new ship assignments when they return to England. It's unlikely at best that they'll be on the same ship when they return to sea. By the way, how many chapters are there going to be, Mark?
Enric Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 ch17: The Dutch are imo not to be pitied....or protected. Just a decade earlier, they had a war against the English. In all this, it's basically that all the others are enemies, or former enemies, or potential future enemies... So, Bertie did not do anything too aggravating.
Mark Arbour Posted September 20, 2009 Author Posted September 20, 2009 By the way, how many chapters are there going to be, Mark? A lot. I'm already up to Chapter 26.

You are referring to the American Revolutionary War, and when reading the history of that war, I can't help but think that the Dutch were less-than-enthusiastic participants. In any event, by the 1790s Holland was definitely in England's orbit. This was smart for both countries on many levels. They had trade routes that complimented each other, they were both fervently capitalistic, and they were both Protestant. In fact, this conflict is the last one the British and the Dutch would engage in as enemies.
dachcr Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 Great chapter, some very low lows and then some good highs! The sail back home will somehow be one big orgy for the captain and his right hand (hmmm nice metaphor). Keep it comming - great news about the amount of chapters.
Enric Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 (edited) ch18: well, is the navy life so difficult as portrayed here.... btw, many gays just love royalty.... and now we have that fat Orange onboard. * it is a given that practically any prince and princess of Orage IS fat... Edited September 23, 2009 by Enric
paya Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 Mark! YOU! You dare! Your only luck is that you hadn't made that a cliffhanger in ch17! The horror in my eyes when I realized "so he's not going to kill him but we'll never hear about him!" so much for letting out the steam... otherwise it's only on your page that you've already published CH10 Bloodlines and CH18 MaC, there's no announcement neither at GA nor at yahoo group... let's work can wait ;-)
Mark Arbour Posted September 20, 2009 Author Posted September 20, 2009 otherwise it's only on your page that you've already published CH10 Bloodlines and CH18 MaC, there's no announcement neither at GA nor at yahoo group... let's work can wait ;-) FYI, the way this works is that I ship a chapter off to Joe and he posts it, lets me know, then I post the announcement and the chapter on Yahoo Groups. Usually we work pretty closely in sync, so it flows quickly, but I went to bed early last night and slept in, and Joe was his usual, efficient self. So that's why the chapter was up on my website and an announcement wasn't posted here yet. And the people in my group have a bit longer to wait until I can get to my laptop and upload the chapter.

Oh, OK... I hope I wasn't rude or something with that reminder, it was just to let you know, if you don't know about that... maybe I take that FYI much stronger than it is, in my native language FYI hints the speaker is somewhat irritated...

I'm not irritated at all. Here, "FYI" isn't a bad thing, I used it to signify I was going slightly off-topic, away from the stream of talking about the story to the mechanics of how it's posted. You know I love you Paya.

Conner Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 So we'll have to re-christen George to George "I love them all" Granger. It's great when your heart (and ass) can accomodate multiple lovers. I like this angle. I don't think I'll ever be ready for Granger to choose between Travers and Calvert. Then again, Travers and Calvert have to be able to handle that as well. I think Travers could. I'm not at all sure about Calvert. Best line in the chapter, "A threesome!" Anyway, no one is about to retire just yet. And as George said, promotions and re-assignments will no doubt keep them separated for several years to come. Looks like we'll have to give Caroline a nickname as well "Fertile Myrtle" 1
Tiger Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Well Conner, Granger is sure to have even more interesting lovers in the future. 'Tis the life of a semen... errr seaman. 1
atllantajack Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 No one has mentioned Michel's passing, so I will! I really liked the little guy and hate that there will be no more interaction between him and his new "Papa" in the future Jack

I really liked the little guy and hate that there will be no more interaction between him and his new "Papa" in the future Jack well, it wouldn't be Mark if he hadn't killed off somebody from time to time... ;-) And blame the smallpox, of course. ;-)
Mark Arbour Posted September 21, 2009 Author Posted September 21, 2009 well, it wouldn't be Mark if he hadn't killed off somebody from time to time... ;-) And blame the smallpox, of course. ;-) Very true. In that day and age, mortality was very high. Here I was, patting myself on the back for not killing off more people.
Tiger Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Chapter 19 is certainly interesting. Well, Granger is a daddy once again. And with the birth of his first daughter, there's also the remembrance of an adopted son. That was touching. Meanwhile, there's a hornet's next in The Netherlands, and it looks like Granger may be leaving yet again. It seems that he rarely gets to have much of a respite. Oh, and then there was a hot threesome at the end. That was certainly a nice touch.
paya Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Would that be too much of a request to ask that Calvert stays with Granger on one ship? PLEASE! Well now that was a chapter! I hope we'll stay on shore for a chapter or two, we have to visit the King and the Prince of Wales, there also could be some commotion about purging the Wilcoxes and perhaps Granger should know something confident about from Lord Spencer? I mean something like a secret diplomatic spy misson or something would be nice too :-) But what was there to spy on Dutch or French in the Carribean? I know they have some islands there but not too much anyway... And YAY to the Carriebean! Free rum and a lot of :chris:! :-D And the Bermuda triangle! :nuke: And a lot of grateful Spaniards
Enric Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 well, Georgie should have the moment to see his own son.... I gather the boy is already one year old, and we'll see what sort of toddler...
amBIguoustwo Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Good chapter, particularly the three-way. When and how will we discover why Caroline doesn't like Calvert? The plot thickens!
Conner Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 So George's maternal grandfather is Govenor of Antigua. Tough job. I could do that job. I'm not certain spoiling Arthur that way was a good idea. He'll want more of that action. I'm totally pleased with the relationship that George has built with his father. That's always cool. Wasn't there something about the Intrepid dropping anchor somewhere near London??? The anchor the Intrepid no longer has???
paya Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Good chapter, particularly the three-way. When and how will we discover why Caroline doesn't like Calvert? The plot thickens! Maybe she doesn't like he spends more time with George than she does. ;-) But it could be also some Court gossip, if I remember right, he had some problems because of Arthur and if Arthur is "known", the gossip can pass on Calvert as well... Travers hasn't been to the Court so he's not known being gay, nor is George, a married man and a father of two children... ;-) Well I don't know, Calvert hasn't seen the King yet (I suppose that was why he was nervous about the levee), so he wasn't exposed so much to be gossiped about... what else? some people just don't hit it off... (The real reason is that Mark wants to stir some drama in it! ;-P)
Mark Arbour Posted September 23, 2009 Author Posted September 23, 2009 Wasn't there something about the Intrepid dropping anchor somewhere near London??? The anchor the Intrepid no longer has??? They carried a spare.
amBIguoustwo Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Mark is correct (of course). Ships carried spare anchors just because of the solution Granger used to resolve the problem of the anchor becoming fouled (is that the word?). In fact, I think taking on spare anchors is described in an earlier book in the series.
