[Adam Phillips] Songs That Make You Think of Crosscurrents

Recommended Posts

I probably just love the song for the most part, but...

Masterpiece Theatre III by Marianas Trench

I've got a new disease in me,

I've got a friend that's losing sleep,

I take it hard, it's hard to take,

I'm wide awake, I'm wide awake.

One more confession, discretion's not what I need to sell,

I never needed a reason for keeping secrets from myself

And now that's just how I tell I'm wide awake

I'll wreck this if I have to tell me what good would

That do?

I'll wreck this if I have to

You get separated, somebody's gone,

And I don't know how this is wrong,

I'm so frustrated, falling behind,

You were a friend of mine.

I'd be so good to you,

Because they don't know you like I do

There's a difference from me to them,

And the road home is paved in star f**kers requiem,

I can never go, go back home again,

Acadia is gone

All my indecision, all of my excess,

Don't you ever tell me I'm not loving you best,

I just need a minute, I just need a breath,

It gets very hard to drink to my continued success

Slow down, it's better in the worst way,

It's getting better in the worst way

So here's another day, I'll spend away from you,

Another night I'm on another broken avenue,

Trading in who I've been for shiny celebrity skin

I like to push until my luck is over

I wonder what you're doing,

I wonder if you doubt it.

I wonder how we used to ever go so long without it.

All the work to impress, charming girls out

(I thought you wanted me)

Of their dresses and smiling pretty and pretty

(I thought you wanted me)

I'm right beside you,

(what you want what you need)

(I thought you wanted me)

I'll make this perfect again.

(what you want what you need)

(I thought you wanted me)

If I burn out and slip away,

(what you want what you need)

(I thought you wanted me)

you're beautiful, you are

I've been here so very long and I could slip into you,

It's so easy to come back into you,

I'll hide it, could I hide in you awhile.

I'm not sick of you yet, is that as good as it gets.

I never took you for a trip but sometimes

I don't know what you want, I could take it

If you need to take this out on someone.

If this is just a part I portray,

I don't know how it got this way

AND, probably a bit better is this one, same band, different title.

Lyrics in the video, but to highlight a few...

Trust in me, trust in me

Don't pull away

Just trust in me, trust in me

And

If your heart wears thin I will hold you up

And I will hide you when it gets too much

I'll be right beside you

Nobody will break you.

I love this second one for the promise Andy makes near the beginning and actually for the entire thing. *sigh*

There's so much pain in this story.. This song reminded me of Andy crying himself in the room (Chapter 28) listening to this track instead of McLahlan's. </3 I don't know whether it was Matt or Angie, but seeing how chapter 29 played out, this song was for Angie.. For sure (Another heart broke) :(

Come up to meet you
Tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you
Tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart
Tell me your secrets
And ask me your questions
Oh, let's go back to the start
Running in circles
Calling tails
Heads on a silence apart

Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh, take me back to the start

I was just guessing
At numbers and figures
Pulling the puzzles apart
Questions of science
Science and progress
Did not speak as loud as my heart
Tell me you love me
Come back and haunt me
I want to rush to the start
Running in circles
Chasing tails
Coming back as we are

Nobody said it was easy
Oh, it's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard
I'm going back to the start

Thanks. I got chills listening to this song.. Funny how Crosscurrents makes me feel somewhat wistful. :(

I got another song that I want to share.. It's a great song; it's sentimental, not melancholy.

When Andy finally realized what he has been doing to Matt and got a better understanding about their situation, I can hear this song playing from the back ground. (Imagining him on the bus alone, sad.. you get the picture :D )

Deep - Binocular

So this is what you mean

And this is how you feel

So this is how you see

And this is how you breathe

Sometimes

I know

Sometimes

I go down deep

Oh

So this is what you mean

And this is how you feel

So this how you see

And this is how you breathe

[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmod...cular/deep.html ]

Sometimes

I know

Sometimes

I go down deep

Oh

Beneath the deep blue sea

Touching every breath

All a slight off hand

For everything you left

Sometimes

I know

Sometimes

I go down deep

Oh

Sometimes

I give myself for you

Sometimes

I know down deep

Over all, it's a chill- chill song. It got me through with some bad times myself.

This is a song that makes me think of Matt and Andy during chapter 30.

"Memory" by Sugarcult

http://listen.groove...ory/1noS1?src=5

This may never start.

We could fall apart.

And I'd be your memory.

Lost your sense of fear.

Feelings insincere.

Can I be your memory?

So get back, back, back to where we lasted.

Just like I imagine.

I could never feel this way.

So get back, back, back to the disaster.

My heart's beating faster.

Holding on to feel the same.

This may never start.

I'll tear us apart.

Can I be your enemy?

Losing half a year.

Waiting for you here

I'd be your anything.

So get back, back, back to where we lasted.

Just like I imagine.

I could never feel this way.

So get back, back, back to the disaster.

My heart's beating faster.

Holding on to feel the same.

This may never start.

Tearing out my heart.

I'd be your memory.

Lost your sense of fear.

(I'd be your memory)

Feelings disappeared.

Can I be your memory?

So get back, back, back to where we lasted.

Just like I imagine.

I could never feel this way.

So get back, back, back to the disaster.

My heart's beating faster.

Holding on to feel the same.

This may never start.

We could fall apart

And I'd be your memory.

Lost your sense of fear.

Feelings insincere.

Can I be your memory?

Can I be your memory?

I love this song for Andy and Matt * Craig Armstrong feat Elizabeth Fraser-This Love *

This love

This love is a strange love

A faded kind of mellow

This love

This love

I think I'm gonna fall again

And ever when you held the hand

And turn 'em in your fingers, love

This love

Now rehearsed we stay, love

Doesn't know it is love

This love

This love

It hasn't have to feel love

It hasn't need to be love

It hasn't mean a thing

This love

This love loves love

It's a strange love, strange love

This love

This love

This love is a strange love, strange love

I'm gonna fall again love

It doesn't mean a thing

Think I'm gonna fall again

This Love

This song makes me think of chapter 31 and the magic summer...

Amber by 311

Brainstorm, take me away from the norm
I got to tell you something
This phenomenon, I had to put it in a song
And it goes like

Whoa, amber is the color of your energy
Whoa, shades of gold displayed naturally

You ought to know what brings me here
You glide through my head blind to fear
And I know why

You live too far away
Your voice rings like a bell anyway
Don't give up your independence
Unless it feels so right
Nothing good comes easily
Sometimes you gotta fight

Launched a thousand ships in my heart
So easy, still it's fine from afar
And you know that
Whoa, brainstorm take me away from the norm
Whoa, I got to tell you something...

Pure Shores - All saints

I've crossed the deserts for miles

Swam water for time

Searching places to find

A piece of something to call mine

(I'm coming)

A piece of something to call mine

(I'm coming)

(I'm coming)

Coming closer to you

Went along many moors

Walked through many doors

The place where I wanna be

Is the place I can call mine

(I'm coming)

Is the place I can call mine

(I'm coming)

(I'm coming)

Coming closer to you

I'm moving

I'm coming

Can you hear, what I hear

It's calling you my dear

Out of reach

(Take me to my beach)

I can hear it, calling you

I'm coming not drowning

Swimming closer to you

Never been here before

I'm intrigued, I'm unsure

I'm searching for more

I've got something thats all mine

I've got something thats all mine

Take me somewhere I can breathe

I've got so much to see

This is where I want to be

In a place I can call mine

In a place I can call mine

I'm moving

I'm coming

Can you hear, what I hear

It's calling you my dear

Out of reach

(Take me to my beach)

I can hear it, calling you

I'm coming not drowning

Swimming closer to you

Moving, coming

Can you hear what I hear?

(Hear it out of reach)

I hear it calling you

Swimming closer to you

Many faces I have seen

Many places I have been

Walked the deserts, swam the shores

(Coming closer to you)

Many faces I have know

Many way in which I've grown

Moving closer on my own

(Coming closer to you)

I move it

I feel it

I'm coming

Not drowning

I move it

I feel it

I'm coming

Not drowning

I'm moving

I'm coming

Can you hear, what I hear

It's calling you my dear

Out of reach

(Take me to my beach)

I can hear it, calling you

I'm coming not drowning

Swimming closer to you

(Take me to my beach)

I'm moving

I'm coming

Can you hear, what I hear

It's calling you my dear

Out of reach

(Take me to my beach)

I can hear it, calling you

I'm coming not drowning

Swimming closer to you

(Take me to my beach)

I pictured Matt singing this song to Andy. Even though it's a piano piece, I can see Matt changing it to have a guitar accompaniment.

When the rain

Is blowing in your face

And the whole world

Is on your case

I could offer you

A warm embrace

To make you feel my love

When the evening shadows

And the stars appear

And there is no one there

To dry your tears

I could hold you

For a million years

To make you feel my love

I know you

Haven't made

Your mind up yet

But I would never

Do you wrong

I've known it

From the moment

That we met

No doubt in my mind

Where you belong

I'd go hungry

I'd go black and blue

I'd go crawling

Down the avenue

No, there's nothing

That I wouldn't do

To make you feel my love

The storms are raging

On the rolling sea

And on the highway of regret

Though winds of change

Are blowing wild and free

You ain't seen nothing

Like me yet

I could make you happy

Make your dreams come true

Nothing that I wouldn't do

Go to the ends

Of the Earth for you

To make you feel my love

To make you feel my love

I like this one for that magical summer in the last two chapters.

I bet there were lazy quiet days like that where those two guys just enjoyed being in this perfect place.

What the hell would I know, though.

I got a couple of queries from people who hadn't heard Randy Travis's cover of "Somewhere In My Broken Heart," the song that Matt sings to Andy in Chapter 30.

You can hear it here.

Sorry, country music haters. It's Texas.

I couldn't get that link to work, but did find it here: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=DTIbuaqDas0.

But for me, I hear Lyle Lovett all through this story. He's Texan, the right vintage (mid 80s on), and he does melancholy/bittersweet as well as anyone. A song that might fit in various places for this story after "the night", maybe when Matt comes to Andy during his flu or at a Jock Posse trip or July 4 campfire, is Lyle Lovett, If You Were to Wake Up. Maybe the "dear" doesn't fit but if Matt were singing it, he could drop it. It could be from either character's perspective, Matt because of how Andy's hurt him, or Andy because he thinks Matt doesn't want him anymore. Matt can play it on his guitar like Lyle does. And it is the right vintage, from Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, 1989.

If you were to wake up, And I were beside you

Would you gently smile dear, And whisper my name

And would you remember, The way that I held you

And would you want me, To hold you again

Time reaches to you, Just like a willow

That bends to the water, And clings to the shore

And there was a time dear, That once you did love me

And there was a time, You loved me no more

Rain on your window, Light on your pillow

The way you lie sleeping, Is it like before

For there was a time dear, That once you did love me

And there was a time

You loved me no more

Adam asked in one of his blogs The Way Things Don't Always Work Out if others gravitate toward bittersweet music/movies/books. I do. That's why I like Lyle, his quirky stuff makes me laugh (If I had a boat, She's no lady, she's your wife, Church, Bears, Don't touch my hat), his melancholy (above, Nobody Knows Me, Step inside this house) reminds me of how my life is so not like what he sings about, and cheers me up. If you've never heard his version of Tammy Wynette's Stand by Your Man, you should check it out. The classic last line, "After all, he's just a man," gives the entire song a completely different meaning the way Lyle sings it.

Odd. the link works fine for me. But thanks for the YouTube link. It's a half-step flat there, presumably to keep the copyright police from automatically finding it and deleting it, but it gives people the general idea.

I'll check out the Lyle Lovett stuff. I know of him, but can't say I've ever listened to a lot of his stuff.

I'm not in the US right now, so maybe that's why I couldn't get the link to work. Same for others on that site.

I could drone on and on about Lyle, but I think if you have to start with one album, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band is the one to start with. More of the songs there fit the quirky side, you have to listen closely to the lyrics, but you get a good intro to his sense of humor, and his range from country to jazz is all there too, plus two good bittersweets--If you were to wake up and Nobody knows me.

But considering your bittersweet tastes, you might prefer Joshua Judges Ruth or Pontiac. Some folks really didn't like JJR because it seemed pretty downbeat. My wife calls it his funeral dirge album. I guess maybe Pontiac splits the difference between Large Band and JJR, but the more upbeats tends more toward country and is less jazzy. The Anthology is a good greatest hits collection too, but some of his better Bittersweet/melancholies are not on it. (If you were to wake up is on it though.) Finally, Step Inside this House is fantastic. It is all covers of other Texas songwriters like Townes van Zandt--so you don't get Lyle's songwriting, but it is still a great album (2 disc set). If you want more details on other albums let me know and I can add more here or by email as would be appropriate.

On your blog you mentioned kd Lang and I like her a lot too. I think of both her and Lyle together, labeled as country, but really with more range than that. But I prefer her album Ingenue to the one you reviewed, though Shadowland is pretty good.

From Andy's "playa days"....

After one or two I get used to the room

We go slow when we first make our moves

By five or six bring you out to the car

Number nine with my head on the bar

And it's sad, but true

Out of cash and I.O.U's

I got desperate desires and unadmirable plans

My tongue will taste of gin and malicious intent

Bring you back to the bar

Get you out of the cold

My sober, straight face gets you out of your clothes

And they're scared that we know

All the crimes they'll commit

Who they'll kiss before they get home

I will lie awake

Lie for fun and fake the way I hold you

Let you fall for every empty word I say

Barely conscious in the door where you stand

Your eyes are fighting sleep while your mouth makes your demands

You laugh at every word trying hard to be cute

I almost feel sorry for what I'm gonna do

And your hair smells of smoke

Who will cast the first stone?

You can sin or spend the night all alone

Brass buttons on your coat hold the cold

In the shape of a heart that they cut out of stone

You're using all your looks that you've thrown from the start

If you let me have my way I swear I'll tear you apart

Cause it's all you can be

You're a drunk and you're scared

It's ladies night, all the girls drink for free

I will lie awake

Lie for fun and fake the way I hold you

Let you fall for every empty word I say

I will lie awake

And lie for fun and fake the way I hold you

Let you fall for every empty word I say

I will lie awake

And lie for fun and fake the way I hold you

Let you fall for every empty word I say

After watching Beauty and the Beast, I decided that the theme makes me think of Angie and Andy. The beauty and the beast she tamed...

"Beauty and the Beast" by Angela Lansbury

Tale as old as time

True as it can be

Barely even friends

Then somebody bends

Unexpectedly

Just a little change

Small to say the least

Both a little scared

Neither one prepared

Beauty and the Beast

Ever just the same

Ever a surprise

Ever as before

Ever just as sure

As the sun will rise

Tale as old as time

Tune as old as song

Bittersweet and strange

Finding you can change

Learning you were wrong

Certain as the sun

Rising in the east

Tale as old as time

Song as old as rhyme

Beauty and the Beast

Tale as old as time

Song as old as rhyme

Beauty and the Beast

Had the story taken place in Paris, I could imagine Matt spending almost every sunset of his first two years of college sitting on top of the butte Montmartre, alone in a crowd, drowning his sorrows in cheap Heineken, going through the chorus over and over in his head...

... and then going back to the same spot at the end of chapter 33.

If you spin it a little further, you might also hear Andy humming the same tune in one of his I'm-right-why-can't-anyone-else-get-me episodes.
