methodwriter85 Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 Gunn High School in the San Francisco Bay area staged a counterdemonstration against the West Baptist Church. Check it out: Gunn Sings Away Hate Group Any of you familiar with Mark Arbour's stories know that some of his characters went to Gunn High School in the early '80's. I know that if he were real, Brad Schluter would be damn proud of his alma mater. Those kids...man. Looking into their faces and knowing that they are the future of this country, I feel a sense of pride and hope. 3
thatboyChase Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 Its like saying we can sing away our troubles. LULZ NO. Go sing away Obama, or sing away terrorists please, hey while you're at it do a ballad for cancer cause we sure as hell don't need that. The whole situation is just....'a try hard' situation. The hate group still attains a victory, I think. High school? Fail. 2

Unless I missed something, it appeared to me that this was a massive community effort and was not just gays.

The hate group still attains a victory, I think. High school? Fail. I fail to see how this equates to the idea that one can sing away their problems. If anything its a demonstration that you don't always need to nuke someone to achieve some form of progress or resolution. Well I can agree with you that it seems the "church" still attained a slight victory here in the sense that they are getting media attention once again from the incident. However it seems pretty obvious that the goal of the highschool was to search for a non-violent solution to the situation. Clearly it would be easier to just beat them all up, but that doesn't solve much beyond creating a grey zone for ones rights. Its hard to run an even slightly sometimes fair society when you make exceptions all over that place. But, I'm sure you already knew that. Edited September 6, 2010 by Skyline 5
Andrew Q Gordon Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 For those who don't know, Fred Phelps and most of his congregation/family as they are almost one and the same - are mostly lawyers - they sue the crap out of towns, and people and organizations for 'violating their free speech.' It is how they support themselves. These demonstrations are designed to stir up controversy and hopefully a law suit. What happened at Gunn, aside from the amazing show of support against hate speech and the like, is an effective way to fire back at the Phelps and his ilk - it denies them any ability to use the situation for their advantage. Go Gunn and all those future leaders of the country. 3

What these kids did was awesome and showed they weren't going to stand for this bullshit in their town! That in and of itself is a noble victory. 3

Hey at least there trying, high school didn't fail they stuck up for there rights and it's awesome too see people fighting back for what they believe in. It may not succedd in winning over the hatred that priest has but it gives hope of what the future may bring from the next generation. Most of the bigots are from the golden days when they where taught homosexuality was a sin and they taught it too there kids who either choose too follow there parents or go there own way and stand up for whats right, there best friends that are gay or a relative that they adore. Like I said these kids may not have changed the heart of that baptist family but there giving hope of change. Take a look at this http://www.stoppingthehate.com/News-Article1302_Nate_Phelps_Estranged_Son_Of_Fred_Phelps_Speaks_Out_Publicly.htm 2

If you saw the OP made a link. What does that link say. GUNN HIGH SCHOOL SINGS AWAY HATE GROUP. My first post is merely going from that. They also heavily imply that is the "peaceful" way to counter demonstrate. I think that way is stupid. That is my opinion and I am very much entitled to it. So those of you who neg'd the post, just because you don't agree with me doesn't allow you the right to do that. However, thats the way the janked system on this site works. Now going back to how your post has anything to do with mine; it doesn't. but I'm sure you already knew that. @TetRefine - Just because you don't agree with how I think doesn't make me cynical, or calling me an ass (which I thought was very rude). For those of you who are all TLDR - I am merely saying that holding a counter demonstration is counter productive. Do something else. Let the hate group do their thing, people will revert the hate. They get media attention (what they truly want) and everybody wins. Ignore them. Then no lawsuit problems will come up, nothing will happen. 3

While I don't agree with the rhetoric displayed at either of the posters, I disagree that the counter protest was not productive, the media may or may not have shown up. The WBC's aim at producing lawsuits is fading, people are on to them and as such hundreds held signs and sang out against them. It shows the community doesn't agree with their hate, and it shows the country that they won't allow hate preached. Phelps, must getting desperate, it cost them money to travel around to protest and with nobody to sue anymore.

EH, Thanks Mark but I just read a lot of stuff. Here is another example of what I meant by they sue to make money- and a reason I don't hate Bill O'Reily anymore: My link Basically they won attorney fees and they are their own attorneys. Sorry it took me a while to find the right story.
