Lugh Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 It Was A School Day You think you know someone: You live with a guy for four years only to find out they aren’t exactly human. Your fiancé meant to wed your best friend. You meet an alien and fall in love. Yeah, you think you know someone… Dramatis Personae has been provided to aid the reader in keeping up with the characters This story is technically a sequel to "It Was a Monday" (Winter 2009 - Deceptions) and a parallel story with "It Was a Holy Day" (Spring 2011 - People are Strange). Reading neither story is required to understand this one, but they are recommended to fully enjoy it. Spoilers to Follow
Marzipan Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 I love Kismet. Even the name is perfect. Reminds me of the chocolate. I think schoold day brought much more light to the previous It Was A -stories, but also left me with new questions... Magitha and Val???? What is this huge conspiricy behind everything? Or is there one? The Faith-Chance-Luck-concept made me actually ponder... as an idea that is so interesting. You can play with that, totally... I'm a big fan of the series And you know it.
Lugh Posted June 12, 2011 Author Posted June 12, 2011 Hah! It's supposed to bring more questions. I'm really glad you enjoyed it. and conspricy.. me... nah. I write science fiction... fantasy... not conspriacy.
jian_sierra Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Lugh, I love the interconnection of all your anthology stories. Very cool!
Lugh Posted June 12, 2011 Author Posted June 12, 2011 Actually I've been working really hard to keep them seperate stories. The timelines do cross and criss and cross again. There might be a few little stories coming up to fill in the holes. I don't know I've not exactly decided yet. Right now I've been focused on keeping everyone moving in the same direction at the same time.
Andrew Q Gordon Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Just to touch on your last post before I say my piece, these clearly ARE interconnect - I mean Kisemt "runs' off to find Puck - and while Kismet's story stands alone quite nicely - or at least the part I am up to - I am reading it on the metro - you can't say they aren't related. You just don't have cross over scenes that appear in both stories. So I am only up to where Kis pitches sweet woo to his roommate's cousin and the dividing sheet is missing. And I have questions and comments. Is the 'universe' this is set in kept deliberately vague, i.e. the political and/or galatic structure? Or is it too much to fit in too small a space? I find/found it hard to follow the social structure of you 'worlds' it seems their is a galatic government of sorts but are the various entities autonomous? it seemed clear that the moment Kis stepped foot on the ship he was on safe ground, i.e. the government official couldn't touch him. And yet, Vol, is nephew to the prince but still in the same school as Kis but the government people backed off real fast when he said, my uncle the Prince - now at that point I just assumed he was important etc, but when Kis was running for the Ship it was clear the Uncle's people were not able to just collect him, and escort him to the ship - hence the chase. But once there, it was sovereign property. Same with the last one where Rix and his people seemed to have some autonomy within the governmental structure. Now I suspect it could Jozet's people trying to keep Kis from doing what he was doing - hence Vol's comments - but since the stories aren't interconnected, That can't be right. I'm a bit confused as well by time and by space travel. How long do interstellar trips take? It seems wherever Kis is going to find Puck it is a journey of many many weeks if not more. I'll review the story when I finish, it is a tad on the long side and not having been graced with an advanced copy, I need to go through it now. And it is rather good so I am taking my time and not just trying to get finished.

You just don't have cross over scenes that appear in both stories. Q... I have never (that I recall) said they weren't related -- I put them in a series for pete's sake. Yes there are cross over scenes, and I've done my best to keep the integretiy of those scenes as well. Is the 'universe' this is set in kept deliberately vague, i.e. the political and/or galatic structure? Or is it too much to fit in too small a space? To be quite honest, neither. I had no idea what "School Day" was going to be about until I wrote it. Just as right now I'm looking at the blank page for "Vacation Day" (the fall anthology) and going.. ideas? to my muse. I'm grabbing one piece of the puzzle, flipping it over and going "ohh pretty! that will fit here!" and so long as it keeps fitting I'll keep working it together. I find/found it hard to follow the social structure of you 'worlds' it seems their is a galatic government of sorts but are the various entities autonomous? it seemed clear that the moment Kis stepped foot on the ship he was on safe ground, i.e. the government official couldn't touch him. But once there, it was sovereign property. Same with the last one where Rix and his people seemed to have some autonomy within the governmental structure. I'm so clearing that up soon. There is a UN-ish type galatic government with autonomous members. Of course that also means there is an anti-UN... Now I suspect it could Jozet's people trying to keep Kis from doing what he was doing - hence Vol's comments - but since the stories aren't interconnected, That can't be right. Jozet and Val are not connected. I'm a bit confused as well by time and by space travel. How long do interstellar trips take? It seems wherever Kis is going to find Puck it is a journey of many many weeks if not more. Follow the blue ball.. see.. pretty... do not look behind the curtian.... shhhhh... hell I don't understand insteller space travel either. I gave them a couple weeks to get there. I can adjust the whole thing to give them a couple more if necessary, but I was vague on purpose. I'll review the story when I finish, it is a tad on the long side and not having been graced with an advanced copy, I need to go through it now. And it is rather good so I am taking my time and not just trying to get finished. Yes, it is a little long, I'm sorry. I had hoped it would be shorter than Holy Day but it didn't work out that way. AND I cut it in half before I started edits. LOL. You didn't ask for an advanced copy. I hope you enjoy all of it.
Andrew Q Gordon Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Jozet and Val are not connected. Not that I expect a straight answer buttttt - Valdorn made the comment to Mia that he did not believe the government agents were really government agents. That suggested to me they were Jozet's people not anyone connected to Kismet's people or the UNish galactic government, I didn't mean to suggest Valdorn and Jozet were related. You didn't ask for an advanced copy. I hope you enjoy all of it. Figured you'd offer like I did to you - but I know better now

Herm now that's an interesting thought... I wonder who else can smell the "rightness" of the Hanover boys for Kis... or sense it for Taloric? Wheels go a cranking... wheeeeeee
Andrew Q Gordon Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Rightness if the Hanover boys, for Kis?? Did I say that??? if I did I have no idea what that means LOL 1
