Chapter 53

-When JJ and John have an encounter in his bed.

"Lay Lady Lay" by Bob Dylan

-When John comforts a crying JJ.

"Disarm" by The Smashing Pumpkins

-When Will and Zach are canoodling, and Will thinks back to how good he is at getting squeamish guys to kiss.

"Slave 4 U" by Britney Spears

Welcome to the era of low-slung jeans and visible thongs.

God, I hate Bob Dylan.  But that was a good pick.

Mark, you know how hard you make it for me to score high school scenes when you have Will being so accepted and loved? No one ever makes songs about happy, well-adjusted popular kids, especially late 90's/early 00's poppy punk bands like Blink 182 and Good Charlotte.

Chapter 54

-When Will lusts over Austin Biehl, and John and Marie tease him about it.

"It's Raining Men" by Geri Halliwell

Can I just say that I think it's weird that Will hasn't mentioned Tom Welling yet? Remember the Smallville poster that was posted everywhere during the summer of 2001?I remember a lot of teens were watching the show. Gay guys and straight girls had Tom Welling, while straight guys and gay girls had Kristin Kreuk. Given Will's penchant for beefy muscle boys, I'd have a hard time believing he wouldn't have pictures of Tom Welling plastered all over his room.

Edited to add: I checked and the show didn't premiere until October 16th. Still, I'm betting Will noticed the Smallville poster. If I'm remembering correctly, it was placed around gay communities, which led to a minor controversy about how it looked too much like what happened to Matthew Shepherd.

-When the family goes for a drive and checks out the new offices.

Chapter 57

-On the jet ride to Hawaii, where Will is convinced that he needs to have a boyfriend to show up Darius, and Austin agrees to pose as his boyfriend.

"We've Got It Going On" by The Backstreet Boys

-When Will enjoys his new sex room.

"Dancing With Myself" by Billy Idol

Can I just take a moment to say how fucking gorgeous Billy Idol was in the 1980's? Man. Simply beautiful, in a cruel, sneering way.

-When Will and Austin try to hook up, but realize that at the end of the day, Austin just isn't programmed for it.

"Girls and Boys" by Blur

Chapter 58

-When Will learns of Marie's break-up drama with Noah, and Noah begs her in school to talk more in school about this silly little tiff they're having.

"Summer Wind Was Always Our Favorite Song" by The Ataris

-When Brad gets stopped at Triton for a search.

"What's Going On" by a 2001 All-Star Tribute

It's crazy to look at this video- it's basically a snap shot and who's who of where music was in the late 90's/start of the 00's. It was intended as an AIDS tribute, and it was shot before 9/11, but after 9/11 the scope of the benefits expanded to include 9/11 survivors.

It also reminded me, "Wow, J Lo really was everywhere back in 2001, wasn't she?"

-When Brad leans of Triton's plans to expand in order to take advantage of Bush's new War on Terror.

Chapter 59

-When Will and Matt get into somewhat of a little tiff, where Will threatens to torch his GMC if he talks to Tony.

"Revolution" by R4

-When Will and Tony drive back after the GLBT meeting, and talk.

"Proud" by Heather Small

-When Brad discovers that the company is engaging is homophobic and racial profiling.

"Fight the Power" by Public Enemy

-When Brad funds the Happy Hour for the employees that were profiled.

"Praise You" by FatBoy Slim

- When Brad meets Chris Mendoza, who Alec warns him about.

"Dive in the Pool" by Barry Harris

I hope I brought out Blue's inner 18-year old club boy with this pick. :P

It's weird to listen to the Queer as Folk soundtrack and watch clips of it and see just how dated its become...which happens, but it's weird to think of the early 2000's as being a decade ago. I actually came across a music channel called "Y2K", decided to the hits of the 2000's, and damn that made me feel old.

Good picks.

Correction:  As far as Will's concerned, Matt can talk to Tony all he wants, he just can't fuck him.

So, when I was 18, I bought the QaF soundtrack from Walmart, because I did indeed like several of the songs, including "Dive in the Pool." I also bought a trance CD, and an Anne Rice novel. My friend with me at the time later asked, "You know, I wonder what the cashier made of those purchases."

I laughed. "I don't wonder at all. You didn't notice her glaring at you?"

"Me?"

"Well, if she assumed I was gay, and you were standing next to me, what do you think she thought you were?"

"!!"

    Funny story.

I never really got that much into Queer as Folk- when it came to a depiction of gay life that I related to, I really loved David on Six Feet Under- low-key kind of gays who interacted more often with straight people instead of living in a gayborhood. The whole circuit boi thing just never appealed to me.

You wanna feel old, Blue? The actor who played Justin is now 36. 36! He'd be a male cougar to a 17-year now. (Well, Randy Harrison was 23 when he played a 17-year old, but still.)

I do think it might be interesting to see a Queer As Folk that reflects the changes in American society- how gay men are navigating with being able to get legally married in a lot of states, getting pressure to start families like their straight counterparts, having openly gay military men, and what it means to have a generation of boys who were never closeted- gay guys who experienced things like going to proms with another boy and getting voted Cutest Couple at their high school.

Chapter 60

-When Brad muses on how much Claremont has transformed in the past 2 years, with a renewed sense of energy.

"Sim Broadway" from Sim City 3000

-When Mat and Wade get into a fight about how he's acting like a freshman.

"We Need A Resolution" by Aaliyah

God, it's a fucking shame that Aaliyah died. She really was doing a lot of good work right up to when she died. I think R&B music would have looked a lot different if she hadn't died.

- When they play a soccer game, and Darius blows up at Ethan for his poor sportsmanship.

"Weapon of Choice" by Fatboy Slim

-When Nana begins her training of Ethan.

"The Rain in Spain" from My Fair Lady

Chapter 61

-When Darius gives Austin some advice.

"The Wanderer" by Dion and the Belmonts

-When Will has one of his sad attacks, and Darius admits that he gets them, too.

"Ordinary World" by Duran Duran

-When Will and Zach talk on the phone.

"Nothing at All" by Heart

Chapter 62

-When Will sees the 2001-2002 Don Bosco Prep Football Team in action.

"The Rockafeller Skank" by Fatboy Slim

-When Zach admits to Will that he's the first true friend he's ever had.

"You've Got A Friend" by James Taylor

That Fatboy Slim song...that reminds me of going to hockey games in the early 2000's.  Great pick!

I just realized that pick should have been for Chapter 63. Oops.

Chapter 64

- When Brad grieves for Robbie while looking at where the Twin Towers used to be.

"Fields of Gold" by Sting

-When the gang goes to Johnny Rockets and watches the staff dance.

"Night Fever" by the Bee Gees

They used to have one in Delaware, at Christiana Mall, circa the late 90's/very early '00s. It was pretty fun- part of that whole 50's theme restaurant deal that was popular back then. The malted shakes were insane. And it was fun to watch them dance to 70's music.

- When Zach and Will discuss what this new bond they have means to them, and Zach confesses his fears that Gathan will try to turn Will against him.

"How Deep Is Your Love?" by the Bee Gees

Chapter 67

-At the A-Ho party.

"Halloween" by Da Boy Tommy

I like to think that Blue just got up and dance around to this shit. Pretty great remix. I remember it being a showcase dance song at my high school for Halloween '02.

-When Wade and Matt argue a bit at the the A-Ho party.

I'd like to think that too.  :P

Not quite, though I did like it. For dancing though, I prefer something a bit harder, and with more lyrics. My favorite song from that time period would probably have been:

It's actually a bit older than that, but that's about when I heard it for the first time.

Chapter 68

-When Zach and Will have some fun in a bathroom stall.

"Closer" by NIN

Michael Fassbender. That man is pure sex. He just looks like someone that would be mind-blowing in bed.

-When Will and Zach have oral sex in his Durango in a park.

"Faded" by SoulDecision

-When Will mentions how much sex they've had, and they begin to talk, and Will comes to a realization that Zach is never going to come out of the closet, not even to himself, for his love of "the show."

"What I Did For Love" from A Chorus Line
