hh5 Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Was papa Yota? Japan Launches Talking 'Robot Astronaut' Kirobo Into Space Meet Kirobo, the talking robot The Kirobo space robot is a diminutive mechanical person just 13 inches (34 centimeters) tall built to converse with astronauts on long space voyages. The robot, and its ground-based counterpart Mirata, are part of the Kibo Robot Project to study human-robot interaction technology. Kirobo speaks Japanese and is expected to talk to JAXA astronaut Koichi Wakata when he arrives at the space station in November. Kibo, which means "hope" in Japanese, is the name of Japan's research laboratory module aboard the International Space Station. The name of Kirobo is a merging of Kibo and robot, project officials have said. - See more at: http://www.space.com/22235-japan-launches-talking-space-robot-astronaut.html#sthash.SKf3nMks.dpuf mmm clone wars coming soon?

Bill W Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Can you imagine some alien race encountering one of these in deep space? Is Commander Data far behind? They mention an interesting use for these would be as a companion for an elderly person living alone. You don't have to visit your aged parent to keep them company, just buy them this robot as a companion. Is this what our society is coming to?
scotty94 Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 what acute little robot i would love a friend like kirobo.

You don't have to visit your aged parent to keep them company, just buy them this robot as a companion. Is this what our society is coming to? Yes. Sooner than we think probably. Consider: pet / friend / companion / carer / diagnostician / notifier of emergency services - all combined - feeds itself *self-recharging*, never loses its temper, never cruel, always there to help. These will become so cheap and provide a much better all round service. All we will have to do is change our attitudes. Of course, when they become self-aware will we then have to give them rights to protect them?

I saw it at Miraikan when I was in Japan. I petted it. It was super cute and very responsive, but ultimately not really a proper replacement for human contact...
