so I chated w msft store to ask them which i7 model they are offering for the tablet

the answer - they tell me about the i5-4300U 1.6 GHz with Intel® HD Graphics 4400

duh I told them i wanted to know the i7 model ie: 4910mq

they couldn't answer my question ... they wasted 6 min of my time

I hit them hard w my answer .... well then this why aug 2014 is the released date but without tech answer how can customers bet on the surface

errrrk their answer ... Let me look into something else for you.

I guess I got an india support person ,,, that would kill the deal

anyway  ,,, if this chat went with a corporate client in this anonymous conditions ... we can see that MSFT could easily lose a corporate deal

------------

anyway 1949 is a lot of money

example for just 200 more one could get a laptop w these specs

HP ENVY TouchSmart 17t-j100 17.3" Quad Edition FULL HD Touch Screen EXTREME PERFORMANCE & STORAGE Notebook PC (Intel Core i7-4702MQ, 16GB DDR3L RAM, Beats Audio, 960GB SSD + 2TB Storage, 2GB NVIDIA 750M Gaming Graphics)

thats 8gb more memory, 2tb hd, 2gb dedicated video memory as well as 2013 haswell i7

-------------------------------

for 1800 one could get this

RAM: 8GB
Display: 17.3-inch diagonal Full HD Touch-Screen BrightView LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)
Graphics: 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M Graphics of dedicated video memory
2288GB* Total Disk Space:
Primary:
240GB Solid State (SSD)
Secondary: 1TB (1024GB) 5400RPM Hard Drive
Third: 1TB (1024GB) 5400RPM Hard Drive

Optical Drive: Blu-Ray Writer/Burner
Wireless: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 7260 & Bluetooth® Version 4.0; Intel Wireless Display Support

Keyboard: Full-size Backlit keyboard, numeric keypad, red accents
Webcam: HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Dual-Array Microphone
Added Security: Fingerprint Reader with HP SimplePass
Ports: 4 SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Ports, HDMI, 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet
Audio Enhancements: HP Beats Audio with Quad Speakers
Battery: 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Warranty: Two Year HP Warranty included

just by scaling down to 8gb memory one can save 150 dollars and also get a two year warranty instead of MSFT one year warranty

by investing 175 dollars to get 16gb memory

one is only spending 25 dollars more than 1949 ... one would have something w more bang for the buck

------------

by the time surface pro 3 i7 hits sept 2014 msft will have a lot of competition for end of 3rd quarter n 4th quarter sales

many big names will come out w stuff that has this years latest i7 chip ie: 4910mq

intel promised the 14nm chip n that means

by 1st\2nd quarter 2015 ... companies could put out updated products

or wait to have another fall war on tablets n laptops

ok it took an MVP to actually answer the question on a surface pro 3 forum

Processor                                  GPO                         Storage         RAM          CPU

4th Generation Intel Core i3        Intel HD 4200               64 GB         4 GB          i3-4020Y/ 1.5 GHz

4th Generation Intel Core i5        Intel HD 4400             128 GB         4 GB          i5-4300U/ 2.9 GHz

4th Generation Intel Core i5        Intel HD 4400              256 GB        8 GB          i5-4300U/ 2.9 GHz

4th Generation Intel Core i7        Intel HD 5000              256 GB        8 GB          i7-4650U/ 3.3GHz

4th Generation Intel Core i7        Intel HD 5000              512 GB        8 GB          i7-4650U/ 3.3GHz

The better comparison

Pros and Cons summary
Core i7-4650U
Needs less power

Drawbacks:

Smaller number of CPU cores,
Does not support as many threads,
Clocked lower,
Somewhat higher official price,
Not upgreadable or replaceable

Core i7-4710MQ

Has more CPU cores,
Supports more threads at once,
Clocked higher,
Lower official price,
The processor is upgreadable

Drawbacks:

Requires significantly more power

for 1949 your not getting the full i7-4710mq experience that exists in current laptops

but 4650 works for tablet low power at a large expense

you won't be able to run cpu intensive stuff like what the 4710 can handle

The 4650 might not run the best games efficiently as 4710

its the price of other features that has to tell you its worth 1949

ie: the pen and bringing up onenote with a click

for the laptop its extra for a pen and to find out if it works or not

for 1949 its uncomfortable or awkward on the lap than the laptop

but then with low power you won't burn your lap w the heat

The pen doesn’t have a rechargeable battery. You need a AAAA battery (the first time I’ve heard of that size) plus two wristwatch-type coin-cell batteries. And you need a small screwdriver, not included, to replace the coin-cell batteries.

>> You have to admire Microsoft's persistence

Persistence like Titanic trying sink every year like clockwork

That pretty much wraps it up. There was also the notable absence of a touch-optimised version of Office for Surface; and the lack of anything running Windows RT. The expectation now is that RT will be allowed to die a quiet and unmourned death as Intel improves the power efficiency of its processors, while Nokia - owned now by Microsoft of course - can make big ARM-based devices. You can probably make phone calls on them too.

But the Surface? It's too expensive and doesn't offer anything that you can't split out into equally useful devices for less money; and it doesn't offer anything unique through being combined. You have to admire Microsoft's persistence, but this doesn't seem to be the innovation that the market is looking for. (PS: a new blade on a fan isn't sufficient innovation to make someone buy a tablet-laptop combo.) The last time I looked in the family shower, there were separate bottles of shampoo and conditioner. Some things make better tag lines than real-world scenarios.
