On the way home from ballet class yesterday, we had Max's friend, Michael, riding with us because his mom wasn't able to pick him up. I overheard this conversation from the back seat.

Michael: "....just don't listen to him. He's an idiot. Guys like that aren't worth thinking about."

Max: "I guess."

Michael: "Hey, have you heard about black swans?"

Max: "What? Ummm, no...."

Michael: "Well, like, hundreds of years ago, people thought black swans didn't exist, just 'cuz they'd never seen any. Then some explorer dude found black swans in, like, Australia or something. It was a huge blow-up, and everybody was shocked by how wrong they were."

Max: "Soooo, what does that have anything to do with me or [name redacted]?"

Michael: "[name redacted] needs to lurch back to his cave and do some more evolving. But he's wrong, about what he said about you. You're not weird or a loser. You're beautiful when you dance. You're a beautiful black swan."

I didn't want to let them know I was listening, but I risked a glance in the rearview mirror; Max had the biggest smile I've ever seen on his face. He gave Michael a smooch on the cheek, and said, "Thanks, Mike." Michael's face turned red, but he was smiling, too. 

Today, after school, I found Michael standing near the curb outside the building. I asked, "Where's Max?" Michael responded, "He had to use the bathroom, but he'll be here soon." I gave Michael a quick hug and said, "Thank you for what you said to Max yesterday. He needs that kind of support. He's lucky to have a friend like you." Michael gave a shy smile, then his jaw dropped when I handed him $100 worth of vouchers for the downtown shopping area.

Good Morning, Clo  Sorry to hear that you are still having problems with your dad.  It does sound like your brother and sil are really there for you.  Also, the friends you are now making also are understanding and supportive.  That's great to have.

Mum fell again. This time on the top step going into a nearby restaurant for lunch. Not injured as badly but we spent 4 hours in the ER. No stitches this time, just glue and steri-strips as the cuts were smaller. However, the CT scans show an intact fracture in the orbital bone. These typically heal fine on their own but the on-call specialist requested a follow-up call tomorrow as a precaution since he was calling in from the university hospital in Charleston. Steps are becoming the bane of mum's wellbeing.

Sorry to hear about the visit to the doctor for you and Steve.  I always hated the wait when I lived in the States.  Here doctors work out of hospitals and the service is much better baring emergencies.  Those the give me options for rescheduling to the next day.
