"Really early reader" - such a lovely, kind way to say OLD AS DIRT! LOL! Yes I was broken in way back in the day with names like Virtual Insanity, JoJo, Madison Ayesha Dante, etc. etc. etc.

Not exactly Gay TV/Movies/or Books...

But, "The Summer I Turned Pretty," season three's two debut episodes were a complete and total letdown for me. Mind you, most of season two annoyed me so much that I attempted to read the books. I got through the first half of one. So, I'm not all that invested in the source material, but if the source material has the scene in the second episode play out like it did, then I find it a major fault with the writing.

The writing took a step back in season two, but it seems worse in these first two episodes. I'd have to look and see if there was a change in writers or not. I know the author has a significant role in the adaptation, and has since tweaked a lot of it to be more... current.

Yes, people can make mistakes. There were just too many excuses made for poor behavior, that should have carried a lot more weight than it has so far. If there is 'less' of that weight in the following episodes, I may DNF it and retain my title of picky to a fault.

I feel like I’m getting ‘picky to a fault’ at times. Unfortunately, this leads to a lot of scrolling for something to watch. In any event I was giving “The Summer I Turned Pretty’ the side-eye even before watching it, and now it feels like I’ve been vindicated.

I cannot speak for others. But only for myself.

I think it comes of reading good stories/books and then extrapolating those expectations on series and movies that are written for a less discerning audience and the consequent lack of quality.

Has me irritated that people with much less talent are getting these deals... when I have read fanfiction with more depth, plot and characterization.

Sometimes I just want to watch something stupid, comedic, or fun because there’s enough drama nowadays, but it also needs to be smartly crafted as well — or it gets boring fast.

Fringe culture. Hollywood is too intrenched in it. It is too fleeting most of the time to stay relevant and it never is to most audiences. I mean, Marvel films aren't doing 'that' well anymore, because people finally caught on that if you've watched one, you've watched them all. Most of the world does not want to watch the same stupidity time and again, because when something is popular 'in a moment'  then everyone wants on that cash cow bandwagon.

Why do most modern gay films have an open relationship, cheating, or the 'bored' lover now? Because fringe Hollywood says monogamy isn't fun anymore, or problematic because it is too heteronormative. So instead, they depict gay people as horny, bored, or too toxic/immature to be in a stable relationship with anyone. It is the new, "The gay has to die in the end," edgy that annoys the hell out of me. Before that it was every gay character was a sex worker, or infatuated with a sex worker.

Mind you, I can watch films with all of that above if they weren't carbon copies of one another. It is the same set-up, the same similar characterizations, and the same tropes doing the heavy lifting. There isn't much of a fresh take.

That is why I will happily read subtitles, fighting the eyestrain to watch a foreign film, most of the time they do it 100x better than Hollywood ever could. I will die on that sword all day. :P

sadly there’s nothing new about this tired old trope/cliche

yes, these tragedies have happened and far too often down the decades, but this seemingly relentless obsession by writers / producers could be construed as borderline fetishism

…and in these gruesomely depressing times I need me some uplifting entertainment!

Yes, I know they are trying to send the message that gay people are human beings, that hate is very real and can be dangerous. That it does lead to murder, suicide, near death beatings that leaves the character a lot less of themselves than they were... etc. And, people want to tell their own version of that story. It is no different than all the Pride and Prejudice, Romeo and Juliet mirrors floating around in romance films all the way down to the Hallmark Christmas movies. :P It wouldn't be fair for anyone to say that only a handful of similar films can be made and we all have to collectively move on.

I just would like to live in a world where trends don't lead to plagues where everything coming out is a copy of what is popular at the time.

Also, don't get me started on remakes. We're in the decades of unoriginality as well. Not every show has to be remade for a new audience. A lot of them ruin the greatness of what came before it in the process.

The only reason I watched that show is because of the eye candy that is Gavin Casalegno.  :P

You can have him, he's the reason I'm angry with the first two episodes of this season. The writing is just so stupid. I don't want to spoil anything since the new season debuted earlier in the week. But it felt so... low-tier stage acting in parts of it and the writing didn't help it along.

The dude's character went from puppy dog innocent to full blown problematic in two episodes though. All of the major screen time actors in both episodes are guilty. Then POOF major things were resolved? If there isn't some regression from that resolution in the next episodes I'm going to turn it off... you can't do what they did and get off that easily, major incident or not.

Yup, that's why I said "watched". Past tense. Hopefully, he can get some better roles (or at least a better script) in the future.

Getting back on track, I learned that on September 9th, a new book will be released, titled "Pasta Girls", by Taylor Tracy.

The story follows two girls, Romea and Julianna, who befriend each other at the San Genaro Festival, with the possibility of becoming more.

Both girls live in New York City. Both of their families own a casual Italian restaurant...and then they realize the two restaurants are located on opposite sides of the same street.

Yep. it's a queer, middle grade version of "Romeo and Juliet", dressed up with spaghetti and meatballs.

As silly as it sounds, I'd love to read it once it's available.

I saw this post about Neighbors (Aussie soap) pushing a "throuple" - purely for sensationalism of course. Because stable, committed, monogamous is "boring" now apparently. But that is a whole can of worms.

Has anyone watched Fellow Travelers? If so, what did you think about it?

I’m thinking about buying the first season since it doesn’t seem possible to watch it on any of the streaming services I have access to for free.

I wish I could stand Matt Bomer, because it does seem interesting... I also don't have the service that screens it.

Is there anyone that has every service?
…in which case why don’t all platforms offer PPV (at a non-punitive rate ) to cater for the 99.99% that don’t?
(OK, I invented that bogus stat :o :funny: but the point is fair I think -_-)

You'd be surprised how many people subscribe to them and then forget all about doing so... as well. I used to have Paramount, but I can't remember what the reason for that was. I'm too picky with what I watch to blanket keep something for the sake of the fear of missing out on something.

The kids did make me resubscribe to Netflix for K-Pop Demon Hunter. lol.
