How long do you like your stories?

do you like short stories or novels?

just as a comparison point, a chapter of PoD from me is about 5000 words. A chapter from me of Psionic Corp is about 9,500 words.

In the early years of "cruising" the Internet, I was looking for quickies, so to speak, short, "intense" stories with lots of sex. As I have have grown older and begun writing myself online, I now prefer longer stories with less sex and more plot and characterization.

I like novels. I read them all the time so I voted for that. I agree with FT that you need time for good charcterization and plot development. I always feel sad when I'm approaching the end of a book I have really enjoyed (unless I know that the author has/will write more with the same or similar characters). I suppose everything has to end though :( and it's the sign of a good author that they can leave you wanting more.

I guess we all agree on that point so far! Thelonger the better. FYI, my ear to the ground as a webmaster, there is some big things in the pipeline around here ;)

I developed a habit early on with Nifty... if the chapter didn't acheive at least 15k or have at least several chapters that exceeded 30k... it landed in my reject pile and I didn't even bother.

I try to keep my chapters in the 25-40k per chapter range. Since I like having something to bite into when I read... I make the assumption that others do as well.

I've got to agree here thus far; the porno-esque 3-page BJ stories have gotten old pretty quickly. While I respect novellas, my favorite length will always be novels. One of the hardest things to do in my Intermediate Fiction Writing class is to write short stories that are only 2,000 words long. In my opinion, that is NOT long enough to make a fully-fleshed out story for me. When I write, I plan for chapters upon chapters in advance, building up relationships and making references to things that will become more important later on.

I suppose there is a time and place for very short works, and I salute anyone who can write WELL under such a small space regulation. I totally have respect for that. But when it comes to reading seriously, I prefer novel-sized stories with as little sex as possible (very weird, I know B) ).

for me I like novella or novel length. But the major point in my reading is COMPLETE novels. I hate the serialisation aspect (especially those which do not update for months)

That being said, I am following:

Silent Violin

W.A.R. (a pretty good serial in YF, which has gone from bb to tt, and is almost finished)

Plan B (I started reading this thinking it was complete; it's not. C'mon Driver!)
