John Francis, author of Jagged angel has started a new novel, Pieces of Destiny

It's a story about Jason Thomas who starts off in 2006 and ends up in the year 1864 with a hospitable family, including a cute blond, and some historical characters that you might find familiar. I

From what he's said, the time-travel parts of the story will be low-key, so don't be scared off if you don't like science-fiction.

John Francis is a writer and sometimes-video engineer who works in post-production in the film and television industry in Los Angeles. I found the first chapters of his story (see topic title :P ) few months ago and then, nothing . I thought to story was on "hiatus" but "Oh Wonder", chapter 6 is on !

John explained himself about his story : " .......the idea of these two gay 1800s teens started haunting me (no pun intended). After mulling it over for a year or two, I finally thought: what if the story wasn't about two 1800s teens? What if one was a contemporary 2007 teenager, who fell in love with someone from the past? How would the boy survive with the tumultous events of the 1800s? Could he ever make it back to his own time, and for that matter, would he want to? And the story took off from there."

I found the idea amazing, and the result (a least the first 6 chapters) is worthwhile :worship: My only hope, not to have to wait so long for the next ones.

I give 9 points on 10 for the idea, and 6,5 points on 10 for the writing. I know, its a bit severe, but you can correct my "severity" :D

I found this story in AwesomeDude some months ago with only 2 or 3 chapters and no more. An just now, 8 chapters are to be read ! Its a real nice SF tale.

John Francis wrote in his introduction :

"you know, I think there's a fascinating story here, just in the story of two gay teens from the 1800s. What would their lives be like? What would it be like to be gay in that era? How would their world relate to ours?"

But the idea of these two gay 1800s teens started haunting me . And the story took off from there.

I only hope we have not to wait so long for the next chapters as we were waiting for the first ones.

Perhaps you will find it as amazing as I did.

It's been a tough challenge, doing a time-travel story, because getting the little details is really tough. If I do a reference list for some kind of appendix at the end of the novel, I swear to god, it'll probably be three pages long. The period from 1864-1865 was a really messy time for history, and our main characters will get immersed in quite a few situations. Not the war per se, but... well, you'll see before too much longer.

The good news is, I'm working on Chapter 9 right now, and with luck, I might have it done by Thanksgiving. This is a pivotal chapter, so get ready to hold on.

Hey, if nothing else, there'll be a lot of sex and violence. (More than in the entire story up to this point, I believe.) Lotta twists, turns, and surprises, plus there's some payoffs for a few plot points established very early on in the story.

Gee, thanks (I think). You'll have to let me know in eMail how I might earn another 3 points for the writing. (I draw the line at sexual favors, but bribery is always a possibility.)

On the other hand, elsewhere you call the story "amazing." I hesitate to think what accolades I'd get if I made it to, say, 7.5 or even (dare I hope) 8.5...

I think you might change the rating (much higher or much lower) after Chapter 10. Let's just say if this were a movie, it'd cost about $200 million to shoot.

And Chapter 9 is now up on Awesomedude and Nifty:

I had hoped this would end this particular section of the novel, but it looks like we have at least one more chapter, maybe two. Lots of changes coming, so hang on. Things will definitely get cranked up a notch in Chapter 10. With luck, that might be done just after new year's, maybe sooner.

And my sincere thanks to Dom Luka for his praise elsewhere. Thanks also to VWL and Cole Parker for behind-the-scenes advice and much-needed proofing.

Happy Festivus (for the rest of us), folks!

Thanks sincerely, Dom. That means a lot, coming from an author whose work I admire very much.

This has definitely been the most difficult story I've ever attempted, partly because of the amount of research it's taken, and partly because I've had some trying times personally. One hopes the worst is over, and now it's just a question of finding the time to "keep it movin', movin'," as the song goes.

Graham is right -- technically, this is more a historical novel than it is time-travel, because the SF elements only enter in in chapter 1, and then again at the very end of the story. No science in this story. In fact, at some point, we may start to wonder if what's happening to Jason is real at all; perhaps he's still unconscious in the cave, and all of this is a dream. You never know.

I've just merged the three threads that existed for this story. My apologies if this causes a little confusion in the thread above :D

I'm completely confused, but that's par for the course.

Think of it as training for dealing with time travel stories.... :P
