  2. Feb 21st its due to start Letters to My Brother http://www.out.com/news-commentary/2012/02/01/tyler-clementi-james-letters-my-brother When 18-year-old Tyler Clementi jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge in September 2010, he became an overnight symbol of the fight against cyber-bullying and homophobia. Here, his older brother reclaims his memory from the headlines and pays tribute to his abbreviated life.
  3. Tyler Clementi’s Suicide and Dharun Ravi’s Trial : The New Yorker The Story of a Suicide Two college roommates, a webcam, and a tragedy. http://www.newyorker...currentPage=all this is one of the best pieces of reporting ive read to date on this story

    Tip Thursday

500 characters still allows 5 sentences with 10 words of 10 characters each, plenty of space for a proper description. The description is what is seen on the list & search pages, & on the author pages, which is how stories are found. This description could then be used in peoples signatures, as per point 4 eg; Heres my new story: [Description] It can be the first post of the story thread, as per point 2 The description is also pretty much the only thing promoting existing stories, as thats what a reader sees on the author pages etc Promotion is about promoting something, so you have to state what the something is.

    Tip Thursday

Tags & Description. Use relevant tags that apply to the whole story, & use enough, but not too many, to give an idea of the story. approx 5 is ideal Write a decent description of the story, like you would see on the back of a published book. About 5 sentences is good
  7. (im not american, & im not really into sports) what did he actually achieve? did he do anything that had a benefit to the world, like developing safety gear for sports players?
  8. Gay Death is fast approaching!
  9. those arnt your screenshots are they? what version of Windows are you running?
  10. so a story thats posted to very infrequently, like a Dan Hanratty, could be nominated for multiple years running, even if its just 1 chapter a year? or would it become ineligable based on a previous years nomination? alternatively, if were nominating, & then voting, on 'stories', should it only be open to stories that were completed that year? is it fair to try & compare a completed 5 chapter story to a multi-year epic that dosnt get completed? there could be a 'best work in progress' category for those not yet completed stories, to recognise the effort put into them.
  11. quick suggestion; is there anyone else that could have a look over the requirements & your papers? you said its an online course, so is this an additional workload for this professor? id be concerned as to whether theyre treating online students differently to class-based ones. are you able to discuss things with other online students, see if theyre also having the same issues. as for scholarships, contact them now & inform them about the issue, so that theyre not suddenly faced with the information at a later date.

  13. I think it mainly comes down to how the story was 'birthed' in the first place; is it character led, as in the author comes up with gay characters, & then tries to find a story to fit them into, eg everything revolves around their sexuality is it plot led, where theres an idea for a story, & the characters are secondary elements, eg the characters sexuality isnt the dominant force in the story you also have to decide who your target readership is. if all you want to do is post it to a site like GA or Nifty, then the first approach is perfectly fine. if you want a much wider readership, if you want readers to pass it on to friends, the second approach is going to work better. someone mentioned genres but genres are artificial constructs created by ourselves. they are constraints to creativity. why is it 'gay romance', 'gay thriller'? wheres the 'straight thriller' genre? lets take a thriller with 2 brothers, 1 straight the other gay, both in relationships. what genre is it? why do we keep labelling & pigeonholing ourselves & our works?
  14. thought Twilight was at most 1D?
  15. well we now have some nice slip-on slippers from the QM2, & chocolates but seriously, the shampoos etc are horrible anyway, & theres so little in the containers. quite a few hotel chains in the UK no longer stock rooms with them, but have real stuff available to purchase
  16. not forgetting that there are many many laws still on the books that havnt been enforced for decades or more & others that should be enforced
  17. the QE2 is currently in Dubai being worked on however that picture is of the QM2, the replacement for the QE2
  18. what youve seen are cruise ships, not ocean liners there is in fact only one ocean liner currently in service, the QM2, which i was on for a 7 day atlantic crossing just over a week ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_liner http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QM2
  19. Im going to be in New York 17-28 November. Any suggestions for must-see/do's?
  20. write about what you obviously have no knowledge of? "It was the summer recess and Jack was his usual self, he played with his friends in the park, either soccer or cricket" ^^^ this is from a story (not on GA) set in London, UK. we dont have recess, nor do we play soccer.
  21. thats because the author is a crap author its pure teen-girl wish fulfillment, the sort of stuff written by 14yr olds with coloured pen & lots of drawings of boys, not-to-be-read-by-parents-or-others wankfest & seriously, has SM been locked in a cupboard for the past half-century? this is not the 1950's, & i dont think girls really want to be the 1950's girl/woman.
  22. Grammar within dialogue should be correct for that character. It should also be consistent whenever that character speaks, so no starting out with everything 'correct' & then lapsing into chav-speak.
  23. AP IMPACT: Some 9/11 charities failed miserably http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_SEPT_11_TROUBLED_CHARITIES_ABRIDGED?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT 2 states say they are reviewing 9/11 charities http://hosted.ap.org...EMPLATE=DEFAULT
  24. Interesting that the census was mentioned, & that it dosnt ask about sexuality. Here in the UK, the most recent census (2011) was able to be completed online. This time it still had to be completed by the 'head of the household', but theres nothing to prevent the next one having confidential sections for each house resident. However, that wouldnt be until 2021. As the UK (Whitehall) figure of 6% is from a proper piece of research, using multiple sources, & done without any in-built bias, its more likely to be an accurate figure than those from random surveys. Important to note that the figure is based on the working population, so 18-65, & uses data from 1990-2005. I would expect future surveys & research to be closer to the 'true' figures, as acceptance has increased over time.
  25. Few points- the star ratings show up on every chapter, but are for rating the story (? - it says on mouseover 'rate story'); how do you rate a chapter, & how do different ratings on different chapters get collated into an overall story rating & how is rating the story on the story page different to rating on the chapter pages? (& what about 1 chapter stories, where you can rate on the story page & the chapter page) as an example: a 5 chapter story, where the writing gets better ch1 & 2 - 3* ch3 & 4 - 4* ch5 - 5* what star rating have I given the story? what star ratings have I given the chapters (or have i)? Reviews; people are doing reviews on the stories in GA.Stories, & others in the forums on the relevant threads the thread/forum way is more open, & allows discussion etc, so is that a better place for reviews? Reputation; if you add rep to a chapter, does that add rep to the story, or can it still be repped again on the story page? (ie. if i + on chapter 1, can i then plus on the story page, effectively giving +2 rep)
