  1. My three cents... It depends on the story, the author, the details, and how willing the author is to fudge the facts with enough gusto to have the reader believe it anyway. For example... modern romance set in NYC. Having the vision is wonderful... but if this story is lacking in details -- especially setting -- it's going to fall flat. however.. modern romance set in a large metro city on the east coast of the USA that could be NYC... a little more believable if the author screws up... best... getting the details straight first (including a fact finding mission if at all possible with millions of photographs) BEFORE writing the first word. Now, take that same story, put it on Io and have at.... no one has been to Io, you can make everything up, there could be a city just like NYC on Io in the year 3015 and no one would be the wiser.... it's all up to you.
  2. I decided to have a little fun with this one... I know it's not an It Was A... story. Sorry to disappoint, but that story could not stand alone well enough for the anthology. So, you got this one instead. Here's to a good story anyway. Enjoy! [sharedmedia=stories:stories:2770]
  3. day 14: and a bonus for you:
  4. When Chord’s cousin pisses him off and strands him in Canada he wonders if he can get drunk enough to forget his problems -- apparently he can.

    Drunk Enough

“Did you ever stop to wonder how you were supposed to get home?” Jeff asked. Chord was tired. They had spent the whole day picking up a list of things for Jeff’s mother. Now his cousin sat in the car preparing to leave him at a hotel, on the Canadian side of the border. “I’m sorry. I had my ID in my wallet before I left campus,” Chord protested as he got out. “Well I’ve got to go. I have to be at work in a few hours,” Jeff said as he handed over a bank card and a small bag from the back

  7. It Was A... FYI starts in high school for all of 4000 words (out of about 60k posted). Ok so the characters are rich, well some of them, and royal to boot... but not all of them, in fact the missing main character is not... nor is his family. And if anyone wants to call Rix white... feel free, but I suggest you don't do it to his face. Erebi Seeking... yes there are teenagers, but they aren't having sex with each other and no one is rich, in fact everyone is working class or poverty level, most are struggling to make ends meet and people are just doing what they got to do to survive. some of the others... meh.. you go read them.. a couple don't even have sex... or teenagers... so people need to get over themselves... we have quite a bit of variety and if you want more, then invite authors you like to join and post their stories. It's called growth curve.. the teenager agnsty types are doing all the inviting so that is where the biggest growth is... you want something different.... invite something different.
  8. ah I think this is one of my favorites too... congrats of doubling your post count tonight! You get a happy point for that.
  9. day 12: merry non-denominational holiday y'all
  10. herm.... seems we are starting to get some repeats... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PVwhLeKtYE hah not me!
  11. well see, I think that's my problem. I've never had any real strong females in my life to model characters after. The teenage girls I had limited access to until I was older -- and look where that got me -- and and women, well they were related or all had their habits -- and I don't mean bad ones.
  12. This is going to come as a surprise to some of you but I have trouble writing female characters. For some reason they fall flat and seem one deminsional. I especially have trouble writing mothers. Incase you didn't notice, Mrs. Hanover in It Was A... didn't have much screen time. There was a reason for this. None of the females did. Again, a reason for this. I really do suck at it. Now I'm facing it again. I'm making this mother (who is french catholic) sound Italian.. or Jewish. I'm not sure which has the most guilt laying ability. It's really a toss up, but since she gave the advice to go to confession I'm going with Italian. Maybe Irish. But NOT French. The only thing I can think of to work around it is to have a French father married to an Itailan or Irish mother... and just go with it... but damn. All my mothers sound this way. Can you say Imprinting? Question is... how can I fix it?
  13. Ok for the record I forgot to do this... yes I did meet my Nano writing goal.. barely. go me. I don't have the exact number on me at the moment, I'll update this entry with it later, but I wanted to close that issue...
