  1. lowers the bar even more by making a note to include ninja pirates, amazons, and goat pox in the novel at various random points....

  6. excellent! I was hoping I had gotten them all (for the traditional quest type story) lost temple/city would be interesting, will keep that in mind. Dalmatia -- I'm not saying there CAN NOT be more, I was looking for least common denominator. Nor will everyone be perfect. I'm not even sure I can write a perfect character. Nope, just not in me.

  10. what exactly do I need? here is my short list: one hero one villian one object they both desire one journey a couple of sidekicks (not more than 3) one wisened mentor (possibly included in the sidekicks) one valuable magical item that keeps getting lost one prophacy (or two that contradict) Care to add anything?

  13. one thing that has always worked for me is to write every day even if I don't want to or if it's "stupid". I don't have to keep everything I write, nor do I have to like everything I write but it seems that 100 words a day keeps the block away. Although I will admit this too... writers need time to recharge. You must read, watch TV, be with people, and do other things that stimulate the grey matter in order for the imagination to work properly.
  14. First I'd like to say I did not vote. Mainly because at this point, what I want (or don't want) is a moot point. In my opinion, sexuality is something a child comes with, the same as gender, and while I may have at one point had a preference, I can honestly say both genders have their own particularities as do all the shades of sexuality. Would I have prefered him to be gay at one point? Honestly the thought terrified me. Especially when I would go into the preschool and see him dressed up as a fairy princess -- tierra, wand, and wings! But I never told him it was 'wrong', I didn't hand him a football and tell him to 'be a man'. I just accepted the fact he wanted to be a fairy princess at that point in his life and moved on. Luckily he outgrew it, but would I love him any less if he had not? No, I can honestly say I would not. So does his sexuality matter? Only to him. As many of you know my son is 12 (and that all important half) and he came out to me as heterosexual. He has a girlfriend and we are wading through muddy waters together as we always have. Am I relieved? No, I'm not. Again I'm terrified, but I have learned that being terrified is actually a very healthy part of being a parent. I hope this makes sense... Lugh

  24. herm.... I don't have a particular favorite "form" of magic, but there are a few things that I look for in a good, working magical system. First, there must be a system of checks and balances -- energy isn't free and magic is another form of energy (imho). Second, there must be some form of personal cost to using magic which should be high enough to make people consider the consequences and to keep "just anybody" from running willy-nilly about casting spells (or what-not). Third, there must be rules, even when it is granted by the gods, bought with the blood of ten thousand virgins, or whatever. Finally, it must be consistant. If mage A can not do a thing because it is against the rules of magic, then 100 pages later I do not want to see Mage B doing it. One thing that really aggravates me though is when there is one person in all the world who has (nearly) all the magical gifts of that world and this has never happened before (either by incident or accident) so it must be ordained by the god(desse)s, YET there is a big-bad-guy that (s)he alone must face because (s)he is the only one in the world powerful enough to defeat him.
  25. what i want to know is --- does it really matter?' I mean we all know that color and colour both MEAN the same thing... Honestly I think that if the story is "American" then use color, if it is "any-of-the-other-countries-that-speak-English-other-than-American" then use "colour".
